We bought our house new 20 years ago... the builders had used wooden posts about every 2.4m... we had strong winds snap off the fence at the ground on 3 sides on three separate occasions... I bought the tools and the materials... concrete posts and gravel boards and rebuilt my fences...didn't buy new panels...disassmbled my old fence every nail and rebuilt it into panels to fit between the posts... This saved me money as I didn't have to buy new panels and I had next to nothing to dispose... even the old fence posts... sawed them off square at the ragged base and used them in other (non fence) applications.

I replaced my back fence 2yrs ago and did the entire job out of Accoya, expensive but it will last decades and decades. All the fixings are stainless steel and I designed it so air can pass through it. It's a damn fine picket style fence , treated with Architectual solignum and when I do treat it again all the slats come off to paint and the rails... Proper job. Gloating moi?.... Yep. :-) Tanalized panels, posts are nothing like they were 30yrs ago. The Tanalith barely penetrates 2mm deep in most cases. Shocking stuff.

I worked for a fencing company who made proper strong fences, over did it with the digging, with the concreting, so much attention to detail it really makes shoddy fences stand out and I think there's no excuses for bad fencing. Lap pannels, silly rail brackets, either go concrete with closeboard pannels, or post and rail with spurs

Agree with Roger, don't be fooled by the words "Traditional" Lap Fence Panels 😅 as they're, flimsy, light and there's nothing traditional about them 😨 For starters the "thin" section perimeter wood is held together with 15g brads (not galvanised nails) & their life expectedly is suprisingly short.. If you do however still choose them (because you have those concrete posts they slide into), do not under any circumstances try to pick them up on your own just because they're light. A workmate I use to know picked one up, hands fully outstretched and a gust of wind caught the panel. His feet stayed firmly planted on the ground but his body/waist twisted/swivelled whist he was holding the fence panel and it completely did his back in for the rest of his life and he suffered chronic back pain. So make sure there's two of you when handling these panels 🖒😀

Many concrete posts you can get now are nowhere near as good as the old ones. We did a fence last year, bought the best posts we could, but on cutting one we found the rebar was flimsy compared to the 30+ year old old posts, and the concrete was not as good quality either. Next door had a fence fitted 5 weeks back, 3 of the concrete posts themselves cracked and failed at their base at ground level in the storm last week. My fence stayed up though 🙂

Hi Roger ,i always use 9'' concrete posts and good quality 6' feather edge panels and always dig good size holes and fill with concrete and bricks, with 1' concrete gravel boards and never have any problems, I've had people say wow how you get it so straight lol i say easy good old string line and a long level and good old grafting that's it. I had to laugh my neighbour but one old arris rail fencing been up years finally rotted and blew down in the wind it had 4 feet concrete godfathers been up 30 years, cannot believe they have just replaced the whole fencing and just concrete in new wooden posts and done the arris rail fencing again but not used the existing concrete posts and just butted the new fence up against them, the mother and daughter did it, probably not having a drill and new bolts stopped them from just bolting the new wood posts to the existing concrete posts, i couldn't believe it, could of been a good job but no it won't last long with those wooden posts rotting in the ground 😣

I've got an old wooden 6 feet tall fence with cross rails and slats and wooden posts (7.5 x10cm), along a boundary, put up by a well known house builder 20 years ago, and have had to either buttress and shore up rotting posts or put in new posts altogether over the years (about 7 times in total). The old pergola has come in very handy to cannibalize parts, as some of the tanalised timber posts are 15x15cm, meaning it's just my labour, coach screws and a couple of bags of postfix to do a repair job.

If you've already got them flimsy fence panels, you can strap them across with galvanized wire. 6/6 panels top and bottom on one side and middle on other side. Coat panels with oil based paint/creosote. Them panels will last 20years + with coat of paint every few years of course. I don't use wooden post for fence, however when a feature requires it, I fill the base of hole with gravel, place the post in position and concrete slightly above ground level with a slope away from the post. This way any water penetrated the post will eventually drain off into gravel rather than getting trapped at bottom off post.

I have seen concrete light poles and power poles but concrete fence posts are a new thing to me. They don't exist on this side of the Atlantic. I am in Texas and we consider a wood post a 10 year fence as they rot and get eaten by termites and blown over by wind. Wind like you are getting is common here. The minimum preferred method is a 2 3/8 steel pipe, a sheet metal rolled pipe similar to chain link fence piping. The better permanent option is to use 2 3/8 drill stem. As in small oil/gas drilling pipe. It's usually 3/8 wall extremely heavy and cheaper than sheetmetal. It's cheap because it is not recyclable. Because it has drilled through the earth it is exposed to NORM which makes it lightly radioactive and the scrap places won't buy it. Makes great posts but it's just so heavy to work with.

I agree lovely looking panels them Roger but they’ll cost a fortune. The hit and miss fence around my back garden is 20 years old, posts are still pretty solid. The sarking is rotten in places. I’ve a terrible set up 3 different neighbours share the parameter in a U shape. Think I’m gonna lose a bit of ground and do a fence inside the boundary fence. One section is by a path with post in concrete/tarmac, about 6 posts in that, I get a sore head thinking about it 🤣. (Digging out) Each to their own, I did some privacy fencing screwing post onto my drive wall that’s only about 3ft high to block off the path the neighbours use. I used those cheap weany board panels, used plenty Ducksback black paint, they’ve done 1 winter in Scotland still look class, like new no green mould etc. I think most fences get neglected. The moisture thing is always an issue. Haunching can help gain a few years give or take. It the moisture in the concrete that attacks wooden post believe or not, concrete will hold moisture a lot long than just plan soil, i put this to the test over a 5 year period, yes i could see rot in both posts but concreted post had more rot, i am a fencer by trade & i do try to convince people to go the concrete post & panel route but some really don't like the look of it, so when it comes to rail & board with wooden post we put the post in a plasic sock with a bitumen lining then concrete around it, ok it's not much better but will last a little longer! The key is maintenance, give your fence a good coating in a fence stain "not paint" every year, this helps to keep it solid,,,don't use paint because paint will hold the moisture in the wood where stain will let the wood breath!

Builtup featherboarded fences always last longer than individual fence panel fences, just look around after the storms. The ones that have failed are usually quite old. They act as one structural system which is so much stronger than individual posts and fence panels. They also look so much better than ones with concrete posts. Can't disagree that concrete lasts longer, I'm adding concrete spurs to my fence as yes timber rots in the ground.

I put up the fence in 1989. I cannot take all the credit my nephew and my nieces help me a proud moment when your family.

Great video Roger, still shocked at the amount of fence posts I see embedded straight in the ground. I would always choose concrete over buried wood... That being said I'm a ground screw installer and my favourite combination is a ground screw with a DuraPost fence post on top. No concrete so easily installed by one person and it'll never crack and the DuraPosts themselves are rated at 120mph. They can also be concreted in if you don't have access to the ground screw gear. Worth a look.

All the rotting takes place from below ground level up to 150mm above (the height of rain splashing) so avoid any timber in that area, and use concrete posts and gravel boards. More expensive initially, but cheaper over time....simple.

Forget the praying ! Plant a hedge that will do the job. OK, not instant, but some grow surprisingly fast, and with proper maintenance, will last longer than most fences. If you're worried about boundaries, agree them with the neighbour and put some stakes in to mark it. Good for wildlife too.

I agree with you to a certain extent regarding the hedge. The issue is, you most possibly will take great care of your side of the hedge and most possibly the top too, However, the neighbours, for many different reasons don't take care of their side and it will grow a monster of a hedge making your garden a dark dungeon.

Yep second that I use duraposts. All good so far but no idea how long they will last. Being galvanised you'd expect a while. Totally agree on concrete quality decline. I removed some old concrete fence posts installed in 1950s and they were solid with virtually untouched 8mm+ rebar on each corner. Durapost I could set 3m posts by myself - doing that with concrete I'd be typing this is hospital!

Where the fence post meets the ground, raise a small collar of concrete around the post and proud of the ground, so that rain water will run down the post and off, preventing it settling at the base and rotting the timber. A cost-effective method to give the post extra life.

Do you think a 2.4m concrete post should be deeper than 600mm or does it depend on clay level? Im into grey clay after 275mm of soil. @@wotcherfaz conifer hedging is a difficult one. I prefer native hedges as they’re more beneficial to wildlife. Conifers need pruning regularly to maintain a green hedge. The minute you cut back into hard wood where there has been no light it will be brown. Plenty of leaf matter under the hedge to maybe give it some encouragement as the nutrients slowly breakdown. Scrape a little bark to see if the branches are green and not died off. Wild your garden by Joel Ashton gives you plenty of tips on KZbin and answers your questions.

@@ruinunes8251 Most likely. We have a neighbour who's been in hers for years and dislikes all the tall fences going up. We think the original owners of this house, the landlord, didn't want to pay for a fence so she did it herself and got to have a small one. The point you put across was well made. However, you missed off one major thing. The householder is responsible for the structures around their property. If you have a crappy fence and it blows away and damages other people’s property, you are liable. So make sure your third party liability insurance is sufficient because someone will make a claim against it. It would be a shame to lose your house because of a cheap, crappy fence.
