Oh man I remember those days of compounding errors. Almost 300 hrs now, and still have NEVER had a perfect trip. Every trip I've had (near) perfect phases of flight, but it is like my golf game. I've never shot a perfect round of golf. IFR training has made me a better pilot for sure, but still can't nail everything. Like you said, always learning.
