And if you’re in a position to pay out of pocket for the program, living expenses covered, it takes a lot of risk out of the equation. There might be other paths you can take to get ratings with that amount of cash but doesn’t sound like a bad idea to me at all.

I took the long route. Started training late December 2015. Mom and pop part 61 school whilst going to college and working almost full time from zero hours to CFII. I was working 3 jobs after graduating college to afford the rest of my training and passed my CFI ride in December of 2022. Best day of my life in the last 10 years was putting in 3 2 week notices at the same time to my other jobs. I JUST got to a part 135 SIC position a few months ago. All roads lead to Rome though. ATP is a 8-9 hour day, 5 days a week process and more expensive. I paid roughly 75k from zero to CFI. You'll pay almost double for that at ATP these days however, you'll get it done SUPER quick. Pros and cons to both.

Finished up at ATP about two months ago and don't really have any complaints. The program is a bit longer than advertised, but a lot of this is due to weather, DPE checkride wait, and/or personal schedule. No program is perfect and there were hiccups, but this is the same of any endeavor. Be flexible, be resourceful and be a good student. The program is structured, but it is the responsibity of the student to manage scheule, studying, expectations, etc. ATP provides the resources to get you to your end state. No one loves you more than you; so commit to the program and view ATP as a facilitator to your goal - becoming a airline/commercial pilot.

Wow, it's really cool to find a local aviation channel! I started my PPL at Ellington, and finished it up at H&R at T41 in LaPorte. I've been out of flying for a while, but I'm starting to get back into it. I'm in the Civil Air Patrol at Ellington and will start getting qualified on our planes there once I get my medical renewed in a couple of weeks. I've been considering a "career 2.0" change and pursuing my old aviation dreams and trying to move through my ratings quickly. My current problem is just trying to find someplace that will loan me the money to do them.

Hi Josh I'm from Barcelona, ​​Spain and here everything is more bureaucratic in general. Hey all I’m 25 yo old I grew up in a family of aviation. Ever since I was able to walk I wanted to be a pilot. When I was about 16 I stared take lessons and got to about 25 hours total time, before I stared hanging around the wrong crowd which led me into a position to where I was no longer able to fly, stared working some jobs met the mother of my child and it went from there, 1 or 2 years ago I was working at a local airport which re sparked my aviation bug and when you mentioned seniority it resonated very much so. However I have financial commitments that is preventing from pursuing my dreams. I’m thinking about joining the military serving for either 1 or 2 enlistments either work on avonics or a&p and than I may be able to hop on the bandwagon. Hopefully, thing work out in my favor but knowing how things go with life it may not be the case. I just thought I’d vent how I feel, sorry for ranting on. Thanks guys.

No I trained in Conroe. They didn’t have a location at EFD when I went through which was a bummer because I live 15 minutes from ellington. Instead I drove an hour and twenty mins each way up to conroe. As far as advice… get as much done before then as possible. If you can get your writtens done before hand you will have so much more time to focus on flying.

Small critique of your video that may have impacted your experience and opinion. You are definitely a model student getting all of the written exams out of the way before starting and also scoring no less than 97%. That’s both rare and impressive. Also, you must have went to a great training center with newer equipment. I’m currently in CFI Academy at ATP. My experience is much different. The Archers flown were built in 2014, 2016, 2018. The Seminole that I had the pleasure to fly was as old as I am, a 1979 model.

Unbelievable to me that the GI Bill would not cover a program like ATP for direct training to go be an airline pilot! I too looked at using my GI Bill for them back in 2016 but found out quickly that it wasn’t an option. I went ahead and got my business finance degree with it, but now I’m wishing I had went to some sort of aeronautical university that would have got me the hours and ratings needed. I’ve been seriously considering going to ATP, but the $80k price tag (I’m already a ppl) is pretty daunting

Go to a 141 school, most you can use the GI bill because it’s connected to a college.

So my scenario might be different, but finding a really good Part 61 has been a life saver. I've been in the Army Reserve for 14 years, and a Chinook pilot for 6 of those years, and there's not many options for military assistance for aviation. You can use COOLs for a Part 61, or GI Bill for a part 141. Already being a commercially rated rotor pilot, part 141 just seemed like a waste of time. That said, if you find a good Part 61 school like mine, they might work with you on block rates (paying up front for a discount), and if you come in prepared, studied, and you're good on the controls, you can move very fast. Biggest delay has been DPE's. It's a nation-wide problem right now, but my PPL checkride took 10 weeks to lock in. (Tried 3 different DPEs; 2 cancelled because they were double booked, but also weather, the Christmas holiday, and aircraft maintenance all played a part in the delay.) Making your training and checkrides happen is a lot more hands-on that ATP, but there are good ways to do it. Big thing is find a good Part 61, and develop a rapport with a DPE that won't flake out on you. Currently working on my instrument ASEL, which at this rate I'll have finished it in 4 weeks total. Price wise: PPL, Inst, Commercial, Multi, ATP-CTP, and Jet course should be just around $50k and take 9 months to finish. Hope this helps!

As an ATP student, don’t go to ATP. This man had a very lucky experience with the program at his location. I can tell you from the place that mine was based at, it was very different. Some instructors are very good and passionate about teaching, others are not and will refuse to do grounds with you even if you need help. And as far as plane availability? When my friend went through, there weren’t enough planes so he wasn’t able to fly for months, and when I went through I had a flight where we squawked at least four planes in a row trying to get up in the sky. Not to mention the management seems like it’s actively trying to kick people out right now both instructors and students, probably related to them getting sued right now. So they’re moving up timelines and forcing the students and instructors to bear the brunt of ATP’s mistakes. Maybe you might get lucky and get a location with friendly people willing to work with you. I’m getting separated from the program due to my deployment, a short one at that. I was told beforehand they would try to work with me and freeze my program till I came back but with this recent shift at the company, they’re looking for any excuse to boot people to keep their timelines up. Even with DPE availability they’re struggling. Yeah it might be better than some places where people are waiting months, but other flight schools have their own DPEs on hand ready to go as well. Some people at my program waited a month after finishing everything trying to get a checkride, and as a result got so rusty (mixed with being sent to a totally different location in a way different and busier airspace where ATC was too busy to accommodate) and only a 1.0 flight to get them spun back up (about as much time to take off, take a look, and land), so they failed on a maneuver.

Married with a young kid. I have an ATP school within driving distance of my house. This would be a second career for me. Being that i have a young child and married, knowing that this school requires daily interaction. I am on the fence about it. I would really like to get through school as fast as possible to get to the career side but i also want to make sure I am able to focus and get through with the best education as possible. What are your thoughts? I'd leave my job to attend the school for the length of time it takes. So outside of my family, the flight school would be my number 1 priority. Thanks.

If the school is pretty close, that’s really gonna cut down on your total time for the day that you’d be away. Also, if you’re good at studying on your own, then a lot of that can be done at the house, cutting ground school time to the minimum. In my cohort, it was obvious the ones that were taking the time and studying at home and knew the information when they came in. Those that didn’t know the information, and clearly weren’t studying, were required to attend more ground schools than the rest of us to make sure that they were prepared for the check rides.

Private (PAL), Instrument (IRA), and Commercial (CAX). To take the PAL you will need to complete some kind of ground school like the Kings or Sportys Online Ground School. And then to take the other exams you will need an instructors endorsement.

I would still personally say that atp is one of the best options out there if finances aren’t problem. My personal experience: I got my PPL at atp after 11 months, and then it took another 11 months to get to my instrument check ride, needless to say I double busted on it and got canned from atp. I know what ur thinking another disgruntled person that didn’t make it through the program (yes and no) I quickly moved on and got my instrument rating a month later. My main point is if your not in a financial position where you can afford to pick up and move on (I ran through 90k worth of hours since I did most of my commercial hours relocating planes with an instructor) securing another loan is very difficult for some folks with that I’d say the ratio of making it through private is 50/50 so if you go there with the mind set of this is my only option and I have to make it work, you might be leaving with a 40,000usd debt and not even a PPL (in my nearly two years at the school I’ve watched well over 50 students leave with nothing.

You can have ATP do any or all ratings. I remember having a guy join or cohort to do his commercial and comm multi phases. It was definitely somewhat of a culture shock for him coming from another 61 program but he adapted and was successful!

The fact ATP doesn’t allow students to takeoff or land at airports that are ifr immediately discredits it as a good training facility for 121 pilots. Sorry but you should not be doing approaches to minimums for the very first time in a jet.

An Ex international student here from Aviator College. Believe me that Written Exams are “easy”, maybe except PPL. You will use apps to help you passing exams and please follow my suggestion: prepare yourself and invest your time just to pass the exams first. After that, when you get all your written tests, study because you want to be a good professional and a safe pilot and you will succeed in all your check rides

I did not fail any checkrides and felt more than prepared for them. The written exam prep is really all on you. They give you access to Shephard Air study guides for all of them as soon as you sign up for class, so its really about how hard you study and prepare yourself. For the knowledge portion of the checkrides you will do several ground classes for each phase, but you can also attend other ground trainings as well if you want to bulk up on it. I attended all of my ground training sessions as well as several others just to review to make myself more comfortable.

What was the horizontal and vertical distance of those clouds at 2:28 ? 😉 A retired ex-military or policeman changing careers has a totally different experience than a 20-something: stable, financial security, maturity, knowledge, life skills, support system, decision-making, risk management skills, study skills, health and fitness, drive and commitment, battle-tested. Yup… its a little hard to swallow, but the VAST majority of CFI’s around the country have fewer than 1500 hours. At least at ATP they probably have 1000 hours in the last year so they are super current.

ATP is horrible, they treat you like a number 100% of the time, and half the instructors there think they’re in Top Gun. Their management is cold as ice. And they act like you’re already an airline pilot, As a student, you’re treated like they employ you; no facial hair, shirt must be tucked and belt on, no jeans, or you will get pulled into an office and yelled at. Oh and you’re paying over $120,000 to get disrespected and yelled at by the way. You will change instructors 5-6 times and 4 of them will be terrible, they have barely any knowledge and just make you learn everything online in their webapp, and on zoom grounds. Not surprising because they don’t pay their instructors for grounds, despite charging you for them. And the amount they do pay the instructors is so far below the average for CFI’s in any given area, we’re talking you getting charged $350 per flight hour, and they pay your instructor $18.25 per hour lmao. Each flight block is 3 hours long and you fly 5-6 times a week, let your wallet enjoy that, or better yet, let sallie Mae take care of it for you! If you’re going to go to ATP, and you’re going to sign up for that loan, you better KNOW you want to be an airline pilot. If you don’t, you’re wasting your time and money at ATP, and even if you do KNOW, you still could have a way better experience at a way lower cost at many other flight schools. The few bones I’ll throw ATP: 1. Maintenance is fantastic, planes were always clean and taken care of, I always felt safe in ATP planes, can’t say the same for all other flight schools in my area 2. It is quick, you will not be finishing in 7-9 months or whatever they advertise. Unless the weather never stops you, you don’t get sick, your instructor never cancels or gets sick, and your plane never gets taken, it’ll take more like a year to get all the way through, which is still fast for all the ratings needed to start instructing.

DO NOT FALL INTO THE TRAP. READ THIS FIRST. A lot of facts are not mentioned and a lot of information are not correct unfortunately. The information that ATP has brand new aircrafts is not true, the information that ATP has a fast program is absolutely not true, it only happens at one location only where weather is not an issue. In my case, we were 35 students training on 3 aircrafts, one of them was always squawked (had maintenance issues), and when weather was nice we either had two aircrafts to fly 10 students at the most that day or one aircraft was reserved for a checkride and we end up with one aircraft only. The information that you will be expelled from the program if you fail a checkride is not correct, ATP will kick you out of the program if you fail any stage check twice, and that could happen within the first 20 or 45 hours of training. The program is build around them making money out of you and they make more money out of student who are expelled from the program than student who go all the way and finish the program. Most of the instructors that were at the training center where I went got kicked out after I left and they were really good instructors. They kicked me out of the program after 45 hours, I went to a different school that has over 12 aircrafts and within 9 months I'm going though my CFI academy now and I fly in the same state I was training with ATP. Guys do your homework and find about the information I'm telling you. I don't know why this guy isn't telling the whole truth.

Well what school are you going to now? I see so many comments about how ATP is not that good, and that there are other schools out there, but nobody ever mentions the names of other schools
