Use galvanized siding fasteners (similar to roofing nails) vs finish nails and blind nailing works great, that's why it's recommended by the concrete and wood siding manufacturers. Adding visible nails in the field creates more work and additional risk of long-term water damage.

My two cents-I've done a ton of siding repairs over the past few years. A metal-cutting blade on a recip saw works great for cutting away remaining nails hidden by the course above (if the siding was nailed right over Tyvek, be careful not to damage it) . Prime the cut ends of the replacement pieces of siding. Use the right nails (ring-shank stainless siding nails).

The 15g brad nails are fine for wood siding. I just did a cedar siding repair job and I had to pull off some of the siding i put on with the same gun he is using and they did not come off easy.
@stevenfoust3782

You will find that eventually the nails will not resist seasonal expansion and contraction. In the old days cut nails were used. Galvanized nails will cause the tannins in cedar to stain the siding with streaks. Stainless ring shank nails are the recommended choice.

@terencemerritt

JT, I would have to agree with you that maybe you all don’t know what you all are doing, because you definitely do not nail at the top of cedar bevel wood siding. There’s very little “meat” to nail in to the top. The manufacturer shows/tells where to nail with great detail, just above the bottom overlap.

Would a 16g nail of the required length be the bare minimum for this job? I realize you said you're using a 15g, but the closet nail size/nailer I have is a 16g. Eventually I plan on getting a 15g just that it isn't in my budget currently. I'm DIY so this isn't for commercial use else I would be an idiot not to have a 15g for many other reasons.

I believe 1/12 or less but you can technically do steeper slopes like that as long as you fill out some sort of safety form and take extra precautions. Like harnesses and clamping the base down kind of like they did. Unless you are the owner and doing it yourself then you kind of can do whatever you want.
