For whirligig makers, it is common to make wings turn in opposite directions ... but not everybody sees how it has to be done. Excellent video. (from Brazil)

Thanks for the tips on making the hubs. Just finished making several of the rectangular ones and they turned out great. My first attempt at the round hub wasn't as successful. I'll get back to that later. I do appreciate your insights!

I believe you did a video in which you created an irregular surface to the trailing edge of your wings - rather than the plain smooth edge - for a more realistic look. If so, could you please remind me which of your videos shows you doing that? Thanks1

I have not published a video with that subject. But I will tell you that I simply trace the wing shape from a piece of paper or previously cut wing such as the Blue Jay. Then I use a table top band saw with a 1/4 inch blade to cut the shapes.

Your hubs look about 3/4" square, Is that about right? What length? I like your idea on a drilling jig to ensure wings would be weighted evenly.
@gwheyduke
@gwheyduke 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, 3/4" square on these, sometimes I use 7/8". They are 2 1/2" long. You can make them longer, The length isn't critical. It is important to get the axle hole centered so that the wings will balance, otherwise they won't spin in light breezes.

I made a jig that cuts 2 hubs at the same time, the same way, but then I drill the holes after

I stay away from Dado Blades....Every carpenter I ever worked with that had missing fingers ie " Bit by the Tiger" did it with Dado Blades or a Jointer

Wouldn’t it be quicker and simpler to cut all your slots all on one side of the blade and then just give half of the blocks a quarter turn when you put them in the jig to drill the hole? You could do away with the current setup on your miter and possibly make something way easier to use.

I thought the same thing. You can't use the bolt to hold the hub though. I think you could use the same type of jig you use for the hole drilling attached to your miter and drop the hub into it. I like that you do show multiple ways to do things.

Well, that was certainly one of those things that worked way better in the mind than in actual practice!

@@terryjoestoll Yes, dropping the hubs into a square hold was actually described as a method of making them in an older issue of "Handyman magazine" maybe 1989 or 1990.

Putting two blades together, separated by a piece of cracker box is sooooooo dangerous. Just a matter of time until there is carbide shrapnel all over your shop.

How would that possibly happen? A dado blade set is Essentially the same set up.
