*Voicemail lol Yes it was a real message left on Gary Helsinger's answer machine, by Francesco Sonoyo in the early 90s (Maynard was Gary's roommate). Sonoyo has since changed his stance, but was rather upset at the time for being kicked out for "stealing", which was a misunderstanding, and for clocking up massive phone bills. It's accepted in Italy that men there can be brutally scathing in their verbal responses.

Supposedly, Mr. Manback was the roommate to one of the guitarists from the band Cake. Obviously they had a disagreement on the rent or living arrangements or something and Mr. Manback decided to leave that cute message on the Cake members answering machine (this old device used to capture messages left at one’s residence in case of one’s absence).

I saw an interview with Maynard and the story was a bit different.... Maynard had a friend who asked him to put up an acquaintance of his for a few days at his place because the friend in question didn't have room at their own place. Maynard agreed and even picked the guy up at the airport. Instead of just a couple of days, the guy stayed on Maynard's couch for over 3 weeks, eating all the food in his fridge and never leaving. When Maynard got his phone bill and realized that the guy had racked up nearly a grand in long-distance charges, Maynard finally had enough and kicked the guy out. 3 days later he said he came home to that message on his answering machine. But, as with anything from TOOL, who knows if that particular story is true.

If you listen closely, in the first quiet bit with bass solo in, you can hear Bill Hicks half quoting the bible; "Consume, be Fruitful and Multiply". Then in the breakdown, it's been claimed that the garbled vocal is Hicks again, this time reading out merchandise lists

Tool The OG trolls. On Ticks and Leaches they trolled a record executive who wqnt a heavier track to compete with the heavier sound that Korn and Slipknot had. I starts off hard and heavy and knowing the record guy wasn't going to listen to the whole song they put an almost 3 minute supr chill break down in the middle of the song. To me it's just another reason to love Tool

I don’t recall the whole story Harry Manback but from my memory the record was left on either one of the band members or friends of the bands voicemails. It was the persons asshole landlord who would call and talk shit and they thought it would be funny to add it as a joke track. Hooker on the other hand is a little more clear. Supposedly an OG Tool fan complained to Maynard they were a sell out after releasing Undertow. The “fan” thought since they blow up they would sell out so it’s a middle finger to capitalism and idiotic fanboys. 😂

this does not even sound like tool, the song sticks out for sure. i have been listening to tool since 93 and have listened to this album 1000 times and this is the only song i will skip , not everytime but sometimes. the sarcasim is for sure maynards style but not the music.
