Tool story time: My brother introduced me to Tool when I was 11, it was 2005, he was listening to Aenima at the time and he explained to my why this song is hilarious and it was the first song I loved by Tool. Fast forward to 2014, Tool finally comes back to my hometown on my birthday, tickets sell out within 15 mins but my brother got him, our sister, and I tickets, I tell him before the show that if they play Hooker With A Penis, I will cry. Sure enough, they open with that song, my brother looked at me and I'm tearing up yelling HOOKER WITH A PENIS repeatedly, I was teary eyed the whole show.

On the surface the song is about an "OG fan" accusing Maynard and Tool of selling out, since they were getting pretty huge at that time after success with Undertow, and Maynard pointing out to him that he is wearing brand name clothes drinking coke and basically being hypocritical. It’s about the question of art vs commerce - if great art serves its purpose and is transcendental or discomforting then what does it matter how much it costs? Or how much the artist makes? MJK also whispers the Tool merch list and serial numbers throughout the song - a comedic and lighter take on what Juda Priest were accused of (putting subliminal messages in their music). Bill Hicks once said something along the lines of Why would a band want their fans to kill themselves? And so Tool want you to buy their new record, and t shirts, and mugs, and underwear… 😂
@StefanMedici9 ай бұрын
@@iankrasnow5383the title is self explanatory I thought. Some no nothing stan is accusing them of being a sell out. Selling out being prostituting yourself for money and fame. The band are all guys, hence the douche was accusing them of being hookers with a penis. What I love about the song is how many toxic stans there are who don't know it's about them. I'm not sure why, but I always have a mental block with this song title. I recognize it as a Tool song, but I never match it to the song... I'm just stuck sitting there wondering what it might be. Then I hear the very beginning. Then my adrenal gland starts pumping. I don't even need to get to the "... I've got some advice for you little buddy..." part for the adrenaline surge. It's already there from the beginning of the song, anticipatorily. But the euphoric rage that I feel when he sings the quote I just wrote, it's truly remarkable. To feel rage, but not in the form of violence toward the target... "... then you're the man and he's the man as well...". Is it condescending? Yes. Is it confrontational? Yes. But at it's heart it is about a fan who says something, and Maynard's message to that fan, with aggression, certainly, but also an attempt to pull him out of his "I have to tear you down to lift myself up" bullshit. Does he do it gently? No. Is it an attempt at education? Yes, I would argue that it is. Given the relative social status, and this being an "artist to fan on the street" interaction, especially after the fan said something rude, unsolicited criticism, the emotions make sense. This would be far less effective (and affective, at least for me) if the lyrics were belittling or mocking the fan. Instead, while there is intensity and hostility here, there is also a desire to get that person to open their eyes and see that he is already cool, without needed to pull himself up by tearing something else down. Thanks Geebz, I appreciate your content. :)

Toms is like his punctuation, snares work like vowels and the cymbal and high hat consonants. So it becomes like rhythmic poetry, while also leaving points for the vocals to seam together with. I went to a high school in the 90's built for 1600 people, but with a population of 2700. The was worked around by having a modular system so that some people would be out of class while others were in class. But every day aroung 9 am, everyone had to be in a room for registry. When the clock showed one minute to the end of registry, I'd gather my stuff and park near the door, and when with the clock said 15 seconds to, I'd hit play on Hooker with a Penis. When that bell rang, I shot out of that classroom with my guitar held in front of my like a spear, and I cleaved through the student body as I charged forward to my next class. I can't hear the intro without my heart starting to beat and the feeling that shit's about to go down. Cheers for this.

The day this came out in October of 96, I was at the end of a road trip/bachelor's party from Idaho to New York. We stopped at a record store in Ridgefield, Connecticut, and bought this. The old Subaru we had was sporting a tape deck with an adapter to a Sony Discman. We cranked this album for days. The first time we heard this song, we looked at each other and said in unison "did he just say what I think he said?". So many good ski bum road trip memories with Tool on the play list. A year or so later, Danny Carey walked into our little ski and snowboard shop to rent some gear for a week. That is another story altogether.

Maynard is talking about the irony of someone calling him a sellout to "the man", and that same person has already sold out by buying all these corporate products from "the man", like Vans, Levis, Beastie Boys shirt, Coke and sporting an image including nipple rings and tattoos that claimed he was OGT. Absolutely love this, would love a Kyuss reaction again! Phototropic plus 50 Million Year Round Trip (Upside Up) with Queens of Stone Age too! You Cant Quit Me Baby, anything Josh Homme related! 3 parter?!

Thanks Geebz! Always a good day when we get a TOOL decomposition. Would love to hear your thoughts on a Karnivool classic - Set Fire to the Hive! Cheers Geebz

100% eulogy, hush, bottom, pushit but the live version on salival, the patient, crawl away would all be good moves

As you've probably already learned, this song was about a trendy boy telling Maynard that's he sold out to the man, and is Maynard's response. Glad you're back to Tool, here's a few earlier songs I'll never dislike: Opiate EP: Cold & Ugly (LIVE) Undertow: Crawl Away, Bottom, Flood

Yes, lyrical reaction. This song is actually kinda funny.

I always love to describe tool and maynard in particular as just instruments. maynard is rarely above the other instruments and music, but his voice is another instrument woven in between and not necessarily more important and the lyrics are just a HUGE bonus.

TOOL just never disappoints. This is absolutely one of my favorite tracks they've ever recorded. And was so stoked to see it live on the last tour!

So much nostalgia with this song and this album. Great F U jam 👍

The Witness. It's technically a commercial for the Adam Jones signature guitar, so there shouldn't be any ad breaks. Would love to hear your breakdown of that.
