Thank you Vanessa for giving our Navi the best spa day ever!!! ❤She smelled amazing afterwards and was so soft. We've been big fans of the channel for a while, so it's surreal to see Navi in a video and to read such nice comments about her! For those wondering, her short tail is completely natural! It wasn't docked (she's a stumpy tail ACD). And she is really this calm 95% of the time! She does have her playful and high energy moments, especially when we bring her out on trails and hikes... but for the most part she is a big couch potato and just wants belly rubs. We adopted from a Toronto rescue in August. Before that, she unfortunately bounced around from different homes/shelters in Texas. We sometimes wonder if she's older than 5 given her temperament and energy level (her age was estimated by a vet at the shelter), but we love her all the same!

Her warnings are totally appropriate and accurate. They're extremely tough but they are NOT a low maintenance breed. Here in Aus we call them Heelers and they're very common. I had one a long time ago. They have almost unlimited energy and they are smart. That intelligence means they get bored very easily and when they get bored they are energetic and strong enough to cause a whole lot of trouble. They're unbelievably independent which means they tend to act on their own and assert themselves, which can be a bit unsafe if they're not very well socialised since they like to nip at others. The "heeler" name comes from their tendency to bite at unruly livestock heels. They often pull ruthlessly on the leash and they will wear you out long, loooong before you wear them out. You can't just walk them, they need something stimulating to do every day. One of my favourite breeds but I would never recommend one to a "casual dog owner". They really need to be worked every day, so they need someone fit enough to keep up and with enough spare time to spend maybe 1-2 hours daily giving them something to do (livestock, agility competition... whatever). Maybe one in four are "quiet" and chilled out but this is definitely not something you can count on.

I love Australian Cattle dogs! I’m not a dog person, but I always remember this one Australian cattle dog I met named Brogan. My moms and my birthdays are a day apart in April so we always go somewhere together for the weekend. We went to a bed and breakfast one year and as soon as we arrived, Brogan was there to greet us at our car door! We greeted the innkeeper and she was going through the whole Bed and Breakfast intro and then she finished saying, “and if you feel like taking a walk (there was a wooded area around the house), just call Brogan and he’ll take you”. We found it a little odd at the time, but ok! So it was after breakfast the next day and it was so nice out and we didn’t want to leave yet, so my mom suggested we take a walk, but Brogan wasn’t anywhere that we could see. So, hesitantly, I kind of just called (in a voice not much louder than loud talking) “Hey Brogan, want to go for a walk?” And this dog comes TEARING from around the house, sees us, and then immediately runs to the woods and we follow. He looked straight ahead now at a walking pace and would look back every so often to make sure we were still behind him (maybe 10-12 feet). We would test his skills and stop on the trail and WITHOUT EVEN LOOKING BACK, he would stop too until we continued walking. He was the most amazing dog I’ve ever met and I talk about him to everyone even 12-14 years later!

Mine does that too! He confidently chooses which direction, which neighborhood, or which trail we're going to go on, and he's always checking back in with me. Of course, he's in a leash and harness and I have treats. But sometimes he just turns back and looks at me as if to say, "Um, I've been really good now, so I'm going to sit for a treat."

Calmest Australian cattle dog I have ever seen. Yes, they are mouthy & need consistent training on better options. They Need A Job! Even when they’re old & stiff & forgetful. Not just good herders for sheep & cattle, excellent guard dogs, too. Caution with horses: the dog may get a broken jaw or knocked badly, see mouthiness, horses don’t like being herded by a dog. Train before trust on that issue is best for all critters involved, including the owner(s)!

We had two…we adopted Mustangs and part of the training to get them to stand and not be bothered by things touching their legs/feet…we would throw a ball and the dogs would retrieve from around the horses feet…never ever got kicked. These dogs are fast and smart. I wouldn’t recommend this under cattle. The dogs were the top of the pecking order. Be safe.

And by all means do everything you can to socialize them! Ours is great out and about the town. She will tolerate people and enjoys meeting other dogs. At home is a whole different ball game! They are very territorial and protective of their family. Our neighbors can be in our front yard and she's fine, no problem. If they come into the house or the fenced part of our yard she follows them around and tries to herd them away! She even took one by the hand and literally led her to the front door LOL Like Hey, here's your hat, what's your hurry? My point being that they need to be socialized to strangers IN the home as well as out and about.

As a cattle dog owner, yessss! They’re insanely smart! My Shelby loves lunch meat and ice. I learned that when I came home one day and found a empty salami bag in her bed. After 4 attempts to block her from the kitchen and failing, I purchased a new fridge with latching handles. It didn’t take long for her to figure out how to use the latches. 😂 Now that I’ve accepted my fur baby is smarter than I could have ever imagined, she just goes everywhere with me. She has also become my place of employment’s official mascot. They built her an agility yard on site, installed doggy water fountains, and even gave Shelby her very own office, with her name on the door. In return, she has boosted morale, productivity, and taught everyone with a mini fridge, that it should be elevated and out of reach of the suPAWvisor😂

This dog is owned by people of culture. That red bandana is inspired by the blue heeler in Mad Max 2 (The Road Warrior). The dog was rescued from the pound by staff from the movie, a day before he was due to be put down. After the movie he got to fulfill his bred role of herding farm animals until retirement. His best friend on set was Bruce Spence, ironically since the characters they played did not get on very well. The dog held the Gyro captain at gunpoint in the passenger seat of Max's car. It was a very memorable movie dog.

This actually made me tear up. She looks just like my baby, although mine had a white chest with grey spots 😢 She was really smart, a good listener, and the friendliest dog ever. Loved everyone. Always wanted to cuddle. Smacked me if I stopped petting her. But yes, VERY mouthy. HATED having her paws touched and would snap at you for it. Barked like the world was coming to an end whenever anyone walked past our house, until they came inside and then she’d roll over. Super protective over me and my brother. She was SO hyper as a puppy/young dog and we should have done better running her around tbh. In her old age she became a floor potato (she preferred the floor over beds). She was with us until she was 14 😔

I have an Aussie Cattle Dog myself (10 years old currently) and I have to say I'm suprised at how well she behaved. My dog would NOT tolerate her feet being touched. And she HATES water. Also, not so fond of strangers. Though my aunt also had an Aussie Cattle Dog more similar to this dog!! Her temperment was amazing and she was a sweetheart!! Our current dog is named Myrtle and my aunts dog (who is sadly not with us anymore) was named Asha. Both amazing dogs!! Aussie Cattle Dogs are my personal favorite breed.

I love the Cattle Dog and they are exceptional working dogs, both the Blue and Red varieties. Their herding drive is never-ending so I wouldn't advise getting one if you don't work them all day, and if you have a cat. Our daughter, and her cat, learnt that the hard way when they got one. She herds their cat all day and the cat is not too happy about it. The cat has resorted to hiding behind doors and ambushing the doggo payback. Doggo is now scared of the cat. It's funny and cute but the cat is just tired of the dog being 2 inches behind her all the time.

All their personalities were different, and came with their own unique quirks, but all were extremely intelligent, stubborn, and ALWAYS give 110%. I grew up with a Blue Heeler (also an ACD like Navi, who would be a Stumpy-tailed Cattle Dog), and she was also of this temperament- quite shy and very sweet. Though get her doing her job (I grew up on a cattle farm), and she was very fast and very confident, and her intelligence really shone through. ACDs are the best dogs, imo. As long as you have the ability to exercise their body and their brain, that is.

Australian here- I always get confused when people refer to Heelers as Aussie cattle dogs, Navi is a blue heeler. My doggo, Roxy, was a Red heeler x English Staffy- had the energy and drive of a heeler with the temperament and unrelenting loving shadow of a staffy. Sadly, they are likely to develop cataracts. Roxy lived till 17, still acting like a puppy.

I took her in 4-h where she proceeded to understand the directions better than me and managed to take home every prize for her level, that had very little to do with me. When I was in 4-h though, everyone would say that my parents shouldn't allow me to be with my own dog, however when my mom got her for me she knew that she could be trouble but that she was going to be the best dog for me and she was right. I love my Lil girl

I have the same mix! I call him "German Shepherd Face with the Cattle Dog Booty! Yes to the drive, but he has BOTH breeds' desire to please his human. And after having had an Alaskan husky, that "please the human" drive is a treat. Mine is 6, rescued him at a year old, and is very leash-reactive, but has learned "No Chase!" I trained him not to chase bicycles or noisy trucks. But rabbits and squirrels ... a girl can dream.

@@susanclotfelter7247 I rescued mine at 15 months old. A mail carrier saw her being abused and doubled back to 'steal' her. She bounced through a few shelters before I found her. She's still slightly reactive to bald white men but we've managed to retrain "bark her head off" to "nudge my leg and we'll move away." She gives everyday her all and I couldn't ask for a better partner.

So beautiful and I love the medium size, it's so perfect. Cleo passed away and our time with her was too short but I'm glad i got a chance to make her later years happy and because she was older and not a super active girl we were able to give her what she needed. I really love and admire this breed.

I have a dog who I was told is an ACD/Catahoula leopard dog mix named Moxie. She’s definitely is energetic and has such a strong personality, and is the sweetest dog you’ll ever meet. As she gets older she is turning into more of a couch potato. She was hit by a car before I adopted her and was still healing at the time of the adoption, she had the cone and everything. She still bounded up to me and seemed not to have a care in the world. She is a bit of a princess now with lots of specific quirks (she refuses to get her paws wet, is a total beggar with food, and either gets fussy when you enter her space but if two people are sitting on the couch she MUST be in the middle) but she has the most personality and joy I’ve ever seen in a dog. She’s such a cuddle bug but slightly stingy with kisses. They’re such good dogs.

Navi was so good for her groom! It's easy to see the intelligence in her face. My only interaction with a cattle dog was my husband's childhood blue heeler. Lucky was already a senior when I met her, but on that first meeting she somehow knew, and considered me family. She was very affectionate and polite when asking for pets or her dinner. But like most herding dogs, she'd regularly collect everyone in the living room and try to keep us there. We often didn't figure out what she was doing until we realized that we were all in the same room. I miss her dearly, but she lived to the ripe old age of 17.
