I think this may be my 1st time watching one of your videos and you are very entertaining and have made a subscriber out of me :) Scrappy sewing is very soothing to me. Your mention of pulling scraps from the dog bed scraps made me chuckle! Several of my sewing friends and even a charity sewing group give me their scraps to make dog beds out of and I sort through their scraps first ... lol I thoroughly enjoyed your opinions on the quilt videos that caught your eye. Thank you for your video! I am trying to limit myself to keeping pieces/scraps no smaller than 1 and a half inch width - the pets have to have something in their beds :) Happy sewing!

I had to chuckle when you said the crumb one was excruciating. I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND!!! I've tried crumb sewing, & I'm still not sure if I like it. Maybe for a potholder or small project, but not a big quilt! I do love you smaller coin quilt. I spent HOURS cutting 2×3 1/2 straps for a doll quilt, & a quilt for my niece! When I saw your strip set, all I could do was roll my eyes...duh 🙄. NEXT TIME, I'll make strip sets!!!!!! 😄

Thanks for showing it to us. )))) Just now subscribed. )))

If what you crumb quilted was from your dog bed scraps, I have to tell you (not that I am in your area, but I figure I am a pretty normal "scrap quilter") I am one who ADORES grab bags of scraps. Have you considered selling your "scraps" by the pound as grab bags - - like I have seen Eleanor Burns do? I may not buy yardage in a quilt shop, but I surely would buy quite a few pounds of "scrap" grab bags, JUST to see the variety and add them to my "scrap stash" ... they are the only quilts I make ... well, mostly make. I am going to take my scraps and make this pattern, since I have yardage for just such a project. It is a WONDERFUL scrap project. I already have the recipient picked out for the first on of these that I am going to start making as a relaxing project (since the recipient has gifted me with many scraps from the aprons she makes.) Just a little insight as to how a "scrap quilter" thinks. I like your opinions- - obviously, or I would not have subscribed to your KZbin channel.

Since you asked, I would make it with "strings." (Not crumbs, but also not 1.5 exact strips., with this type of cutting/piecing/pressing, if they start out differently sized then I don't have to be careful. I'll save that for patterns where precision is required & it allows me to use 1 inch, 1.25 inch, & 2 inches in addition to 1.5.)

I'm 73 also - I would never do any crumb quilting! I have enough stash that will be here when I'm not, and who knows what my kids will do with it! :) In my opinion, it's more wasteful to leave large pieces of fabric un-used, than itty-bitty scraps! That's just my opinion...

I find these videos so funny and a bit sad. I watched the large storm at sea video and was impressed with the designer for coming up with a quilt that allows one to make SAS without templates and small block. Which is the reason why I haven't made it thus far. I feel if I can master the larger one I will go smaller to make one with more movement. The movement is also achieved with fabric choice and that too can be hard. It's clear you have a thing against MSQC and the videos they share which specialize in patterns using precuts for those who have trouble with matching or picking pleasing fabrics. In a world with so much negative it would be so much better to show or demonstrate rather then bashing others and their talent. They or no other designers do what you do they share positivity and you should as well.

OTOH, it is refreshing for someone to say what they really think. So many quilters write and say "This is wonderful" to a video when maybe it's actually not that wonderful. She calls herself the "opinionated quilter" for a reason. I tend to agree that in the quilting world, no one out there is sharing opposing views on opinions. She is certainly free to do it on her own channel.
@ksharpe81372 жыл бұрын
You said it so well. This is my first video I’ve watched of hers and it will be my last. I refuse to support someone that bashes others. She really needs to lighten up.

I, too, was turned off initially with the MSQC bashing and said so at the time (this isn’t the first time she’s referred to them in a negative way). It’s too bad because I have learned some things from Maureen’s videos. Surely she can make her opinion known without belittling other talented and experienced quilters.

There is a method of the crumb quilt look using strips. JustGetItDoneQuilts has a you tube on it. I love the tiny pieces and have wanted another project to do a crumb quilt. I love doing it with the strips. I have so many strips left over including a lot of inch and a half ones and strips from left over binding. The strip method was so fast and easy and I got those tiny tiny pieces that I would never sit there and sew together one by one. I never made a seam less than 6 1/2 inches. Those were the seams to sew my blocks together. I have really been enjoying your videos. I too want many repeats of the block to show the interaction of the blocks even when it is a baby quilt. I love your practical down to earth attitude of doing things. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge.

And, I bought fabric for quilt number two background. I didn't clearly consider how I was cutting the background and it left me with enough scraps to make the 3" coins for the nine-inch block. AND! I found a bolt of the teal fabric you used in the one behind you! You have almost revolutionized my zeal for scraps! Hooray for all those who only make planned quilts - - they help us a LOT! LOL

One of my friends saw pictures of my first quilt using this pattern. I have just completed cutting the fabric for her quilt (the strips of colors were already assembled, leftovers from making the strips will provide me with quite a few more of the 12.5" blocks) ... all I have had to buy is the background fabric. I smile every time I work with the "leftovers" of the original blocks I started with PLUS my Bonnie Hunter scrap saver system. I smile because you are the one that gave me the pattern. In FACT! I decided to see what crumbs would look like in this quilt, so my second quilt will have crumb pieced strips inserted between the background fabric. You have given me renewed interest in using up my scraps, and for that, I will ALWAYS smile while working on them and thinking of you. Opinionated Quilter is a VERY good thing. Thank you, Maureen.

I do like the small blocks better and feel the smaller size of block and overall quilt is more appropriate for a baby. You completely nailed it! First, I agree about the "Tsunami" quilt. When I saw the video I thought that although it's a nice wall hanging, the Storm At Sea pattern doesn't really stand out. Second, I've changed my opinion over the last year or so, agreeing with you that crumbs aren't worth the effort. But I have so many scraps and I want to use them. I have seen Storm at Sea quilts for many years. I wanted to make one because it was pretty. Not once did I see or hear anything about "waves" or "movement." I didn't know that's what others saw in it. I just thought it was pretty. ----- While I really like the original, and agree with your comments, I'm going with the Tsunami pattern this month because I need a quilt for a 13-year-old boy (he's not likely to notice the lack of waves or movement LOL). I think the larger block Tsunami quilt will work well for him and I can make the traditional pattern later....for myself! :)

It's just a rail fence made with pieced strips instead of regular strips. But I like it. I like it in the smaller version - using 1.5" strips. I like it with the crumbs as well - would be great with scraps sewn on a adding machine tape instead of doing what your employee did. I'm not doing crumb quilts anymore as I've found myself not wanting to spend the time as I have a ton of beautiful fabrics to use up before I die and crumbs take forever and the end result is usually "less than stunning". :)

Fantastic as usual. I agree with you about the smaller sizes of everything. I love scraps so much but I don't feel that I have time in my life to indulge very often. Can you design something that lets a person play with your coin collection strips but doesn't require the time requirement for so many coin-dense blocks? Maybe solid blocks or four-patches in between? If anyone can do this, you can. And if it doesn't look good, it's not worth doing as you have said, and you truly know the difference. It doesn't use up the most scraps possible, but for a lap quilt it might be a good compromise for some of us. Love your ideas so much and thank you for your work to share.

I like both versions. I have to say, I enjoy crumb quilting so I would be more likely to make the crumb version; I don’t seem to keep 1 1/2 inch strips around.. I like the coins, but I use strips for string quilts for charity donations and have a hill (maybe a mountain--could be n denial) of crumbs and odd shapes I just can't throw away. Adding machine tape to use for improv strips seems to be less intense. I hate the jumbled crumb quilts that seem like a mess, this coin-strip- crumb option gives the eye somewhere to rest and some decent organization. Thank you! New to you channel, look forward to more 😎
