I was a New Yorker, and moved to PR for 6 months. I had Ana's attitude at first. I would be in the checkout line and complain about the people holding up the line by talking to the cashier. They all seemed to have something to talk about, without any concern for people waiting in line. Then I got in the PR groove, the rhythm. After that I made sure I too had something nice to share with the cashiers. Beautiful smiles were my rewards. I Love Puerto Ricans.

@@AnaSantapau Beautiful Ana, I enjoyed your video and had no intention to criticize your (the) list. An attitude however is the way we see and react to things. Mine was poor, and thanks to the beautiful people there who welcomed me, I looked forward to seeing lizards in my house. I was serenaded by the Coqui at night. Unfortunately the mosquito will take some time. Working on it.

The second time that happened to me at a Sams club in PR, I got up on a chair and started asking out loud if I could get some lunch because the wait was too long (the cashier decided to go on break and asked everyone to wait for her return), lol. They saw this 6'4' gringo on a chair and probably thought I was corporate. The moved the line at a good pace after that.

Have been to PR from Australia. Twice. Loved the island. Loved Vieques. Our kids went feral within a day of arriving. They loved the lizards. Loved the coqui. We loved the food, people and places. Loved the bioluminescent bay. Loved Arecibo observatory… it was working when we saw it…loved the Cuevas, lechoneras, arroz con gandules, Piraguas. people we met were friendly and caring. There’s much more to love about PR than to not to like. Hopefully we can get to go back again. We would really love to see more of El Yunque and as much of the island as we can, with help from people who live and love the island. This is the jewel of the Caribbean Sea. We’ve been on beaches that are truly like the postcards photos…all on our own. I hope the island remains a jewel! G’day from Melbourne Australia!

I’ve visited Puerto Rico twice from here in the states, the most recent being last summer. I absolutely love it. It’s a beautiful island with incredible people and a great culture! Went zip-lining in the rainforest, toured the Bacardi distillery, ate lechon in Cayey, drank enough Don Q for a lifetime, visited El Morro and partied every night at La Placita in San Juan! When I go back for my third visit, I definitely want to stay in Ponce on the south side of the island and get to experience the Caribbean waters! Much love to Puerto Rico! 🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷

Remember that visiting and living there is very different. Visiting for a few days and come back to the states is fine, but living in PR could be a nightmare, as she is telling in the video: IF you are used to the way most things are done in the states (and the easiness and quickness) in PR is the opposite. have to have patience

Bro, Puerto Ricans know how to turn up and that’s a damn fact! I wish Puerto Rico would be treated better by our government. They deserve representation with House/Senate seats in Congress or least should be able to vote in federal elections since they pay federal taxes. “No taxation without representation!” They’ve served in our military in all our major conflicts and they’re our cops, firefighters, doctors, teachers, lawyers, nurses, musicians and actors and have contributed so much to the American Dream. They deserve much better!

You gotta get some Lechon bro!!! I went to Cayey both times I visited and it’s probably the best pork I’ve ever eaten in my life. Granted, you’re gonna get some stares for being a gringo in those parts who can’t speak Spanish 🤣😂 but honestly the people up there were so nice and accommodating. I remember the first time I went, a bunch of old heads were buying me beers left and right and the band singled us out in between sets since we were like the only tourists there and the singer said “Hold your glasses up for our friends from the mainland! Welcome you guys!” and made us all feel so welcome. I remember vividly this old PR lady coming up to me and started teaching me how to salsa and it was rich! If you want night life and the party scene, hit up La Placita in San Juan dude, bars and clubs everywhere! Look up Andrew Zimmern’s Puerto Rico episode and you’ll see what I’m talking about! Have fun dude!

Please do not compare Hawai'i with Puerto Rico as far as your issues-In Hawai'i at least drivers have the decency to use their turn signals, have some sense of rules of the road. Second in Hawai'i it is you first. In Puerto Rico it is me first. In Hawai'i a cool breeze cools you off .In Puerto Rico it gets humid no such thing as a cool breeze. Culture is also different. I respect the Puerto Rican culture as they have not been diluted like Hawai'i's. In my opinion Hawai'i has been to "americanised" which is sad. The worst thing that can happen to a country is it's losing it's identity-culture , heritage, way of life, language. In Puerto Rico they have kept it. In Hawai'i all but lost, including the land

I (a Louisianian) took my Greek-Australian wife to Puerto Rico for our honeymoon in 2012 and instead of staying in the touristy areas, we stayed in Loiza. I remember she and I both sat up wondering who kept turning their car alarm on and off until I literally Googled "What the hell is that noise in Puerto Rico at night?" and sure enough, Google identified it as the Coqui frog. We explored Viejo San Juan and Fort El Morro, visited Casa Bacardi, every beach we could, and ate a LOT of good food. The only restaurants we went to were Carmin on PR187 and El Jibarito on Calle de Sol in Viejo San Juan. Most of our time there, we cooked, which meant a trip to Supermax for the freshest bread I've ever eaten. Needless to say, we were in heaven, despite the rain and the humidity. We went back for a "second honeymoon" in 2019, and stayed in some eco-lodging in El Yunque, a condo in Condado, and an historic hotel in Ponce. This time, I had to go to Luquillo to the kioskos. I ate so much, I think I gained 5 pounds on that trip! Exploring the rainforest is one of our most treasured moments...well, aside from me holding up the checkout line in Supermax speaking to some of the older ladies who work there! 😂(my fault...) The people there have been wonderful, and I even had a chance to entertain some of the local kids on my way to Ponce, though I'm convinced they were just laughing at me, since I barely speak Spanish and have a less-than-stellar comprehension of it. But my wife and I consider Puerto Rico a magical place for up and despite the slow: 1. pace 2. traffic 3. internet ...we wouldn't trade our time there for anything in the world. ❤

Puerto Rico is a beautiful island filled with everything that comes with island living (ask anyone who’s lived in Hawaii or other island). Those “night noises” are nature letting you know it exist. It’s a beautiful experience if you allow yourself to connect to it, rather than find it annoying. I’m a Neuyorican (New Yorker of Puerto Rican descent). My first encounter with the island was at the age of five. Coney Island was the only beach I knew, so imagine my reaction when I stepped into an ocean whose floor I could see. I currently reside in Louisiana, where I deal with lizards, mosquitos, spiders and snakes; where seasons are unpredictable, tornados forget that it’s supposed to be winter, and hurricanes come hundreds of miles inland at a CAT 4. The pace here is slow, super slow and parking. I can go on and on, but the point I’m trying to make is this…Anywhere we go in the world (I’ve lived in Europe, too), has its ups and downs. Expect the worse and that’s what we’ll get. So, as you board your flight to Puerto Rico do so with this quote from the late Dr. Wayne Dyer on your mind, “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” Happy travels 😊❣️🙏🏼

I wa born in Mayaguez, lived ther till I was 11, when my family relocated to Chicago. I love and miss my hometown, try to go there whenever I get a chance. Whenever I'm there, I don't rent a car, I prefer to walk so I can actually feel it, the places, the people and even though I haven't lived there for a long time, I actually only feel at home when I'm there, even though I don't know most of the people, I've never felt like a stranger, people are friendly, will talk to me as if we've known each other our whole life, I've walked from the beach area to El Serro de las Mesas, from the bridge at the entrance of the town the the border of Hormigueros and enjoyed every single minute. If it wasn't for my son's and grandkids, I would've been living back in Mayaguez a long time ago! Puerto Rico and its people might not be perfect, but in my opinion they beat anything the US has to offer and I prefer PR and it's people over the states!

@@787aida-rivers.a try the weather in places like Chicago. One day is almost 69° and by the end of the day, you get snow and 20°. Or the summer with over 100° and no where to cool off unless it's indoors. Plus at least in PR, you're always about 20 mins away from the beach or el campo with cooler temperatures and amazing views. In Chicago you have gigantic brick buildings, mostly with big glass walls, that only make the heat even more intolerable. You have a better chance of seeing me walking down the streets in Chicago in a below zero temperature than in summer. But in PR, you won't catch me indoors!

I moved to Puerto Rico in 2018 I love it. I tell everyone that the Puerto Rican people are some of the nicest people you will meet till they get into the car. People don't use turn signals when they drive some don't even have tail lights. There is military time which is 15 minutes early and then there's exact time then there is fashionably late which is 10 minutes late and then there's Puerto Rican time get there when you get there.

I've had a connection to Puerto Rico since I was seven years old and moved there with my family to Fort Buchanan. We lived there for nearly four years and were some of the best memories ever. I have been blessed through my employment to travel to Puerto Rico at least twice a year for the past ten years. It is like going home. I love the people. I love the culture. I love the food. Did I mention I love the food? Ana is correct with her video. There are things that are done in Puerto Rico that many will find irritating or they just do not like. That is the way Puerto Ricans do things and best to realize it and "go with the flow". My suggestion to everyone is get away from the city and head to the rural areas, if possible. So many things to discover and wonderful people to meet. I am excited that I will be heading to Puerto Rico for a ten day work trip next week.

I’ve been to Puerto Rico five times in my lifetime. We went there on vacation in 2022 and 2023. We absolutely love the people, culture, landscape, food and of course the ocean. My kids and I speak Spanish so we don’t have language issue like some which may be of some frustration to strictly English speakers because a lot of Puerto Rican’s do not speak English.

It always strike me when people point out the flaws of Puerto Rico, but fail to see and/or acknowledge the deep troubles that the USA is experiencing, both nationally and internationally… Puerto Rico has serious infrastructure problems, that’s a truth and I’m not here to deny it, but many States have serious issues as well, even with bridges collapsing, etc… Hey,, at least our bridges are holding on LOL And with all due respect, as a society PR is a FAR HEALTHIER place to live than the continental USA. I wouldn’t move to the mainland, even if you’d pay me millions $$$ to do so. (And that says a lot since I lived in one of the nicest places and neighborhoods in California, Malibu) I’ve always said that if you want to know how healthy or unhealthy a society is, go to their prisons… In the USA there is STRICT segregation implemented, and racial groups hate each other with passion… In Puerto Rico, it doesn’t matter what is your skin color, or what is your nationality. As long as you remain humble and respect the rules, they will accept you and respect you. And you can make friends with whoever you want within the prison, regardless of skin color/race. There are other serious issues in the States, the HUGE political divide that honestly remains irreconcilable, not to mention the MADNESS of the Culture Wars. All sponsored and promoted by the government itself and the mainstream media. Extremist views such as ‘Defund Police’, open borders, the embrace of marxism, etc… In my humble opinion, the US is in a huge decline and nearing its own collapse. It is sad for me to see it and admit it, but it is what it is…

@@AntonioSantos-pn7kj No importa cuantas faltas puedas apuntar en los E.U, PR can double it. Infrastructure, economic and law wise. Just look at the steady rate in which natives are fleeing just because they can't find a job o nacistes anoche??. Nurses work for less than 12 dollars an hour. Teachers make minimum. In contrast to taxes they pay thanks to the high tariffs on imports and the fact we export little to nothing. Natural resources were stripped away decades ago Prisons? Spend a night in Las cucharas de Ponce,. Corruption? Read history. Not only Sila Calderon or Fortuño I'm talking about the massacres covered up the American government... and don't even get me started on the damn jones act or the unconstitutional treatments that are expiremented on them like the gag law for example. What about taxes? What about the unemployment rate, poverty rate, income household rate, energy prices... I can go on for hours to prove how deep I wonder what in the hell are you onto here?? Only thing we can agree on is the slight edge Puerto Rican society obviously has over the Americans due to a not such dense population and a beautiful culture that has been ruined, the nature that is taken for granted, the buried history ect ect. But my main comment points out the flaws that needs to be addressed to get such a small island afloat. Look at Singapore and then look at PRs. Look at the violence, the damn joke of an education system we have in PR, the lack of export due to restrictions, the fact that we're second class citizens that more than 90% of don't even know what the constitution is nor know we have rights.

@@tylerdurden9364 We may have our opinions on so many subjects, but facts are there to remind us that not everything is black and white, there are many grey areas, and political and cultural issues can be highly complex and difficult to fully understand. For example, if you don’t believe me when I say PR is not the worst place in the USA, then let’s take a walk down Detroit Michigan for instance, and then you tell me if Puerto Rico is the worst place in terms of economy and corruption. Wanna talk about corruption?? How about Biden’s family?? Remember back in 2020 just days before the election, the bombshell story about Hunter’s laptop was released by the New York Post, just to later be censored by all mainstream media and Big Tech companies and branded: “Russian Disinformation” More than two years later, (just days ago) the New York Times admitted the story is real, as well as most of the mainstream media outlets. And yet nothing happens. Although the story has been authenticated, there is no accountability… Corruption at its best!! And when you say that so many Puerto Ricans are fleeing because they can’t even find a decent job or afford their cost of living, that’s true 👍🏼 But why don’t we talk about NY for example?? So many people have left NY during the last 2-3 years because it’s almost impossible to make a living over there. People from all across the country are moving to places like Texas and Florida. (The ‘emigration’ is not exclusive to PR). However, I can certainly agree with you on Puerto Rico being stripped of its own resources and means of production several decades ago, to make us completely dependent on the mainland. And also the high tariffs on imports, true 👍🏼 Now, on the issue of prisons, let’s not fool ourselves. It would render into a false equivalence, if we start drawing parallels among the mainland and the island on that particular issue. We don’t have racial segregation in our prisons, that’s just a fact. I’m not saying that life within any prison is ‘peaches & cream’, all I am saying is that the color of your skin will never be the determining factor here, unlike the mainland USA that is supposedly “more advanced and civilized” And then we can also agree on the damages that have been inflicted on PR as a direct result of wrong policies implemented on the island for more than a century. Policies that in a vast majority were decided unilaterally in Washington, without our consent or agreement, therefore is not our fault. About Singapore, let’s not even get started. Far more advanced than the entire USA LOL, so, let’s not even go there. And yes, uneducated Puerto Ricans are unaware of their constitution or their rights, but then again, that’s also true in the mainland. If you don’t believe me, just go on youtube and watch random interviews on the streets asking basic questions about US history, it’s constitution, etc… And watch the SHOCKING illiteracy and ignorance displayed, much to our horror… I guess the main point of my arguments is not to deny or dismiss the many problems Puerto Rico is experiencing, on the contrary. My main point is that it’s not fair, nor accurate, to judge Puerto Rico as an external entity. Puerto Rico may not be a State, but PR is part of the USA. So whoever claims that PR is “third world country”, is saying that the USA is “third world country”. And as I said before, Detroit is far worse, and it’s a city within a STATE in the mainland… Now, does that make the USA a “third world country”? Of course not… Even first world countries like Sweden have some deteriorated and poor cities. I am aware that we may not agree on many things, but at least we could agree on several issues 👍🏼 Un saludo fraternal 🇵🇷 🙏🏼

It's nice and rare to see a fellow person so well educated on these subjects. My harshness on the island viene de ver a lack of evolution amongst society over there in comparison to America. After being forced to travel back and forth thanks to lack of advancement and seeing how nice you can achieve to have it in the United States in such little time, just hits home since Puerto Rico ain't that far after all... it's just tough, it sucks and their are millions of other Puerto ricans in the same situation or even worst hustling so damn hard just to survive. Not even to be in the middle class, I'm talking about just to survive. Así de duro esta la cosa en la Isla for the majority that can't just pick up and cross a state line from Cali to Texas. Gracias. Un saludo fraterno desde Atlanta, GA

I lived in PR for a number of years and remember that time fondly. But there are a couple of things she didn't mention one of them being all the ants. If you left anything out it would be immediately swarmed by ants, a whole army of them. Another issue is how quickly things go stale if not properly wrapped. If you fail to put away crackers properly they lose their crispiness due to the humidity. I also recall swarms of flying roaches (aka. Palmetto bugs) occasionally making their presence known when you're outside. But all these are minor annoyances because the island and its people are amazing. You just have to give yourself some time to fully transition.

The coquis use to make me fall asleep and one of the things I miss. You forgot the most important thing and one of the reasons I moved out: crime. You never know when you will be a victim, which can include being in the middle of a shooting while you’re shopping at the mall, waiting to enter the movies, or maybe just in your way home from work. Before I moved, a young lawyer got shot in the head because she was between two cars that were shooting each other. That affects the quality of life you can have. Which is not much. Not too many cultural activities you’re left with shopping, walking in El Viejo San Juan, going to the beach, dining out, or visiting some place in the island, which you can also get mugged. I left PR and I can’t be happier. I miss my friends, some views, and the coqui sound. That’s it.

Wow! I love the night sounds. I don’t consider them noises. This is an island and those sounds at night are so relaxing and help us fall asleep. It’s like we’re on vacation every day. That’s what living in Puerto Rico feels like. Every country has it’s pros and cons. Here, the pros outweigh the cons. The weather is perfect all year long except for a few months of rain (hurricane season). November-February we feel a cool breeze (not snowstorms). We have the only rain forest in the United States, Pterocarpus forests, mountains, valleys, beaches, rivers, waterfalls, lakes, which we can enjoy year round and Puerto Rican’s are very friendly and happy people. According to the 2016 World Happiest Report Puerto Rican’s have emerged the happiest people in the Caribbean. I think all those facts mentioned in the video, although true, (except we do have several Chick-Fill-A’s and an Apple Store in San Juan) can be compared to things in the States (like harsh weather, crime rate, racism, mass shootings, etc) that people overlook or get used to because there are other factors that pull them to that state or country. I lived in Chicago for 9 years during my childhood and when I got here I had a culture shock which lasted several years but now I’m fine and used to all those things mentioned here.

For Example, I live on the east side of the island on Ceiba and it rarely rains here, but on other places of the island like the north and the west, it rains all the time. However, when it’s hurricane and storm season, the east side is generally the most affected. Everything else is on point, especially the drivers part and the internet part… the internet sucks here compare to the internet in the US.

Now government agencies are incompetent and slow that is true but if you need a private agency or contractor you can find efficient ones. Also FYI Trader Joe’s and stores like Target are stores where whites tend to go in the states. In PR the cheapest store is going to be Walmart and/ or Amigo. Now that I live on the mainland I buy my groceries at Hispanic stores I have never touched a Trader Joe’s only walked in. Target has been useful for finding old movies but that’s about it. Being from Florida originally and having spent many summers in Luquillo and Caguas as both a child and adult, Puerto Rico living is second nature for me. Three things I would recommend to the curious wanting to visit Puerto Rico and think they’re smart; 1. Do not start honking and getting loud with people because they honked. Be humble and let it go. Being a tough guy in a place you don’t know will bring severe consequences if you encounter the wrong person. 2. Be wary driving at night. Not that everyone or everything is dangerous but a wrong turn can easily and quickly take you somewhere you don’t belong and at night, you don’t want that problem, believe me. 3. Be careful where you travel. These neighborhoods are not tourist attractions. If you think you’re going into a neighborhood deep in the hood like you’re bad, you better be prepared for the attention you will bring upon yourself and it won’t end well. As mentioned previously, be humble and also, respect. Puerto Rico is a beautiful place and locals are easily approachable if you get lost and need directions(during the day) but be mindful and if you’re coming with a bad attitude, believe me, you will have a bad day quick. There are many wonderful places one can visit and have a great time enjoying beautiful sites, delicious food and other delights the island offers. I have considered many times relocating permanently but only time will tell. Safe travels ✌️

Potholes? Ever been to NYC, Chicago, Detroit, any city USA? Potholes are more common than craters on the moon! I've lived most of my life in the states, most of my family is here, including my kids and grand kids and if it wasn't for them, I would've been back living in mi Isla. A lot of puertoricans in the island are completely delusional about what REAL life in the states is like, they seem to watch too many fantasy movies or read too many propaganda brochures. Then there's the puertoricans in the states that looooove to embellish their lives to their friends and family members back in La Isla, to make themselves look better, I personally know a few! My ex sister in law is one of them. She sold one of her sisters back in Camuy that fantasy life crap. That poor woman(the only one in that family that I actually like) was about to leave everything behind in the Isla, her house, her job, everything, to move to the states. Luckily I visited her along with my ex wife and when we herd the bs story, I made a deal with her, that she would first come to stay with us for a month and if she liked what she saw, we will help her move here. She agreed, we showed her the downtown Chicago that her other sister had showed her in the pics, then we showed her, the real Chicago, showed her where her lying sister lived and worked, showed her my bills, that's all it took for her to change her mind and stay in PR, in her own beautiful house in Camuy(my second favorite town in PR), righ next to Las Cuevas, keep her job and two awesome loving kids in that beautiful, peaceful environment that is Camuy! It's being over 10 yrs and she has never again come to the states. If I want to see them, I have to go to PR, cause she wants nothing to do with the states. All I did was show her the reality of life in the states, nothing else!

Living in PR there is a feeling you cant find no where else. Once you get used to the food, the people, the slowness of day to day, the culture, the weather, it becomes a place you cant put into words. Its place that just changes the way you think about life.

I'm from PR but I lived in the US for many years and now I've been back in Puerto Rico for a 5 years now and one thing that I noticed coming back is that a lot of people in PR that grew up in PR have a kind of mentality where they don't see themselves as Americans even though they are US citizens from birth. And if you are Puerto Rican and grew up mostly in the States, if you say you don't like Salsa or Merengue or Reggueton they will think you're a freak of nature lol. 😢. I grew up listening to 90's alternative rock bands like Korn, Tool, A Puddle of Mud, Incubus, etc. Most people here that say they like rock music, it's always bands from the 80's like Metallica or some old crap. And people make tooooo much noise, everybody talks loud AF here. Where I live it's always loud AF and people drive aggresively, and someone is ALWAYS doing construction, or drilling, or hammering, or just using some loud power tool, or some A-Hole playing 1 of 4 things (salsa, merengue, bachata, or reggueton) loud AF. And there's always loud motorcycles everywhere. That's my biggest complaints. AND the heat, F the heat, seriously the heat is unbearable.

Sad part is the iguanas were never there when I lived there. Now, they are everywhere. They are an invasive species and the government permits hunting them. I haven't been able to visit in 19 years, so I have not had to deal with seeing them. It is so unfortunate to see they are everywhere, but the indigenous Three horned iguana found on the Puerto Rican off shore Isla Mona remains an endangered species.

I used to come visit my friends in Puerto Rico quite often but my "last" visit was 2013. That was the WORST I had ever seen the mosquitoes in all the times I came down there. On that trip we went to Vieques and the bugs there were a nightmare. I couldn't take it anymore. And the older I got the more they annoyed me. I told my friends they would have to come visit ME from now on. I miss PR, I miss my friends, I miss Luquillo, San Juan, Pinones, road trips to Utuado, Ponce, El Yunque, picking mangoes and devouring them in the 90° heat, dining out and having strangers tell you "Buen provecho" as they leave (an endearing aspect of local culture), lounging on the beaches, the lechoneras, my friend's ocean view condo in Santurce, the FOOD, the music, the bbq's...I miss it ALL. But I just can NOT deal with those bugs anymore.

I'm Puerto Rican so I may be biased but Puerto Rico is AMAZING. I was born in PR but raised in the US so I didn't get to experience PR until I was a teen. I was sad to leave the US bc it's was where I was raised so it was like my home. But when I got to PR and got to experience it, all my sadness disappeared. I embraced my new life with so much excitement. It's just a whole different feeling when you live in PR. You just feel more free and being in a tropical ecosystem just feels amazing. They have the better food in general than the US itself, even their own American companies. Heck, even the chinese food over here is better. Not to mention they have more variety due to the culture amd tradition over here. I know when people say school, kids by default whine about going BUT school over in PR is so GOATED FR FR. At least back in my days. IDK how it is now bc I hear that it's getting influenced by the US schools. But when I used to go, the schools weren't inside a locked building. It's an open area, whether multiple buildings, or even just one big open building where you could come and go as you please. It feels so free for being a school. And if your teacher is absent, mostly all the time, you had no substitute so you could do whatever while you wait for your next class. There's only one downside... you're tempted to cut class just to hang out with your friends. And I mean hang OUT, as in, outside the school area. I remember walking around the town with friends just having a good time all the time. 😂

Moved back to PR 4 years ago.... everything is easy to deal with except for 1 thing (Jobs). Unless you are working remotely, do Forex, have a source of income that doesn't depend on an actual 9 to 5 job in the island, or have a degree, you won't find jobs in PR that will pay you well. Thankfully I retired at an early age so I don't have to work, but for those that need a job, most jobs pay average a minimum. Other than that, if you buy a house you don't pay high taxes and rent is cheap.
