These are great pieces of advice. I especially love the one about yelling at service people. It will get you nowhere! It's quite comical to watch actually. A friend of mine did this at a restaurant and then they ignored him everytime he came in.😅

All very true points. If people move here, they are the one's that need to adapt, Not Costa Rica. Costa Rica forces you to slow down!! Enjoy it!!!

DON'T MOVE to Costa Rica if you have a human soul that cares about your fellow humans getting gentrified and displaced. WHY does every "expat" think that he/she is the exception to the effects of gentrification? you're not job creators, you don't blend in, never did, never will, you were OUR guests, our friendly tourist visitors, but suddenly you start buying up every piece of land in this tiny country, i mean, what's the matter with you people?

I just returned from a 16-day trip to Costa Rica and your points seem to be spot on. It is a beautiful country with some of the friendliest people you will ever meet. But you have to be willing to accept the central America pace of life and infrastructure. Of possible interest to anyone is planning to go to the Nicoya peninsula within the next few weeks, you probably should fly into the Liberia airport instead of San Jose. On April 11th the ferry boat from Puntarenas to Paquera crashed into the Paquera dock and damaged it, so it is now closed for an estimated 2 months. For now, to get from San Jose to Paquera you have to take the Puntarenas to Naranjo ferry or make an 8 hour drive around the Gulf of Nicoya since the Puente La Amistad bridge is also shut down. Since the Paquera ferry and the bridge are both out, there is a lot of traffic directed to the Naranjo ferry causing a long wait times.

As you said, things are done differently here and you may not know why. I am a believer to go with the flow. . . Do as they do, don't ask why, just do! I do like to understand the steps one must take to complete a process, like opening a bank account. But as to why the process is cumbersome, I feel like I just need to do it without asking why. Less frustrating. One day I'll open an account. . . . 😅 . . . 😊 . . . Thank you, Sarah, you are tremendous!

Also true. Obviously, we are all shaped and trained by the culture we grow up in. It is the same for Costa Ricans. We cannot expect them to adapt to our ways of doing things. Accept it or forget it.

I've lived here 20 years I have literally seen hundreds of people come and go most within the first two years of arriving. I would guess that about 85 to 90% of the people who move here should never have set foot outside of their home country . And nobody misses them when they leave

Hola from Heredia. A beautiful morning here and looking up at the mountains in the Central Valley is always special. One should not move here if they are basing their CR experiences on vacationing and spending time in Marriott hotels. It goes with your points but one should not move here if they lack self awareness.

Lol! This is absolutely so true! Patience is something I lack, specially at the bank. So I learned to do all my banking online and never set foot inside. Does that mean I adapted?? 😜

I can speak Spanish at beginner level but I am a language lover. I speak 3 languages fluently already(Korean, English, French) and Spanish will be my 4th or 5th(I spend more time learning Japanese). I have visited Costa Rica before and I don't think it will be dream come true destination because I am not that fond of beach towns(Tamarindo, Jaco, Uvita). If I move there I think I will only stay in San Jose or Ezcazu. I do think of going to Costa Rica to get a citizenship(I am Canadian). I would mainly want to go to Costa Rica for the Healthcare.

I have been there at least 25 times and all around and never met a nasty tico. Funny to have to discuss these because these are basic human traits ya hope all people possess I think instinctively. Freud says by 10 years old. Love thy neighbor.
