+ Wandergirl108 I was wondering the same thing as you. However, it's human nature to do the exact opposite of what you're told not to do. For instance; don't touch and, what do you do, you touch. I think the same applies here, the boy was told not to peek and, however, he peeked. The game Hide and Seek comes to mind; how many times have you peeked through your fingers to see where the other kids went so when you were done counting, you found them faster, and I think that's the "moral" of the story; If you're told not to do something, and you do what you were told not to do, there'll be consequences for your actions.

I think I would have said oh fuck off I'm trying to sleep you dick!! Especially where I grew up. It was bad enough waking up to gunfire or plastic explosives being detonated and rattling the windows or the entire house. Or British Army helicopters buzzing over our houses. I swear they would fly so low you could see the Pilot and Co-pilot. So instead of hide and seek we would play try to hit the Puma or their stupid little Gazelle choppers with a brick game. They didn't seem to like that for some reason. But if you see a helicopter flying just above the rooftops what else were you supposed to do? Not throw a brick at it? I enjoy these stories and have been on a binge lately but honestly don't find them scary just something to listen to at night while my girl reads. Those 50 shades of grey books were a good time to be alive!! 3 kids later......

Cliffhangers like this are such shit when the story is being told from the perspective of the person going through them. The story sets it up to make it seem like some crazy horrible shit is going to happen after the cliffhanger, usually making the implication that the character is going to die. With out something telling us how his first person account of this story happened, it kills any suspense of the cliffhanger, and makes any implied harm useless to the story. If it's saying that it was a recording, or a diary entry or something and it gets interrupted, causing the cliffhanger, that's fine. The character had SOME way of describing the events taking place in a first-person voice. But when you have a first person narration without it explicitly saying how the character told those events, you must assume they're telling it to you themselves. That erases almost every bit of terror or thoughts of gruesome fates the author tries so hard to imply, because, the character must be alive to recount the events. Moral of the story : Unless the events are recorded in some way that makes it possible for a likely dead character to tell their tale, don't use implied death at your cliffhanger. It makes no sense for the character to be telling it as his or herself, and it kills any of the shit you're working to build. Its just not logical.

Secondly, you *can* tell a story from a dead person's perspective--have you read the Lovely Bones? The girl was dead as she described the events up until her demise. There are TONS of other books written this way. Third, first person means the person speaks the tale from their point of view only--doesn't matter if it's past/present/future. That's where tense comes in. The account at which you're telling it doesn't determine the tense. (for example, I can speak in 3rd person/future tense or 2nd person/past tense) There is no specific rule just because of the POV. But I understand that it would matter, since he is probably dead while telling the story. But we don't know that for sure, that's where the cliffhanger comes in. You can assume he is alive or not. In my opinion, since he used past tense to tell the story (I checked) and there is a cliffhanger present, I assume he is dead. Fourth off, the writing wasn't bad simply because he didn't establish whether it was a ghost or not. It does suggest that he died before he could figure that out. Finally, you seem to be going off on this story because of the realism? He stated the thing that whispered to him was a 'monster' and that when he pulled the covers off of it 'disappeared', and his appears suddenly went from distressed to normal, he hears the whispers but never sees anyone--that's called *imagery*, showing but not telling. Bad writing is a lack of imagery, and this story is full of imagery. The character also mentions living in a house, having a family, going to school, taking classes, getting in trouble--like any normal kid at his age. This is clearly based on a real world with fictional events, that doesn't have to said. Just shown.

I'm purely just curious. 2. Holding your eyes closed is surprisingly hard. It tenses your eye muscles, sometimes hurts. It also feels uncomfortable, and it feels nice to open your eyes so they aren't just in the dark wihout air. It's like telling someone to hold their head still.

well, for the reading thing I use voice over. and for typing I use this thing called braille screen input. It's basically typing in braille, but on a screen. Took a while to get used to, but I got the hang of it, and voice over is just a text to speech program. You can find both of these in settings if you have an apple device. Also you weren't being mean. I get these questions and I'm always happy to answer them. Voice over, like braille screen, took a little bit to get the hang of, but, also like braille screen, I got the hang of it.
