As I’m typing this I just experienced a battery bursting into smoke inside my bedroom, I knew I wasn’t supposed to breathe it in so I wasn’t but I had to come back in, open my window, grab it, and throw it out. So my question is how much do you have to breathe In for it to be harmful?
@dillonbirdsong7192 Жыл бұрын
@@FireHawk9463 just hold your breath while opening the window and allow it to vent you’ll be okay 👌🏼

Years ago, when loose Li-poly cells first appeared on the commercial market, they were used for powering RC goodies like planes. Any injury or mistake in recharging them would pop them just like that. A bucket of dry sand to charge them in was strongly advised.

...and to think most of our small electricals (such as Bluetooth earpieces) have one of these powering it. I use that example as I can remember using an earpiece a few years ago... It cut out in the middle of a call and got very hot, very quickly. I was on the motorway at the time and I wasn't taking any chances. I lobed it straight out the window!
@sacr35 жыл бұрын
The issue is trying to jam pack an enormous amount of energy into a small area, eventually we will hit this point where nothing we use will be a hundred percent safe simply because of the amount of potential energy it has. Unless we develop a new system that allows us to charge device within seconds, then we won't have to strive for multiple-day battery life because you could just touch your phone to something and it instantly charges it. Kind of like a supercapacitor, or one that has a higher energy density or equal to that of a lithium ion or Lithium Polymer battery. It would only last one day on a single charge but charging stations would be placed everywhere because people could just walk into a store and tap their phone and it's charged.

using water on a lithium polymer battery is fine. having this happen once won't hurt you. it's not something you want to make a habit of.
@bruhdabones7 жыл бұрын
SuperAWaC Actually, its recommended you contact your local poison control center upon inhalation of lithium. It's highly toxic even in small doses. And water will spread around the lithium/oxidizer mixture - it should be treated as one would treat an electrical fire and grease fire at the same time. @bartbatenburg7 жыл бұрын
not really, this is just the reaction of lithium with air, which is violent whether there is charge build up or not
@lajoswinkler7 жыл бұрын
It matters. There is no lithium inside. Only its compounds and a solid electrolyte. This is lithium polymer battery, not nonrechargeable lithium battery.
@aajjeee7 жыл бұрын
yes, an uncharged battery will burn much more slowly because the initial source of ignition is the short circuit
@discountmgroverspares44167 жыл бұрын
Lithium doesn't burn on exposure to air, it needs a source of ignition. Therefore a charged cell will burn a lot 'quicker' than a discharged one, as the short circuit provides the heat to start the chain reaction.

@puckcat226797 жыл бұрын
Brad Scott This is true. Good thing there's no elemental lithium in a Li ion or LiPo battery. What you saw there was steam-just like pouring water on a hot skillet. Now, pouring water on an opened lithium primary cell is a different story (non-rechargeable button batteries) Those do contain elemental lithium.

Actually lithium ion batteries are suspected of bringing down a cargo plane. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UPS_Airlines_Flight_6 This brought in a raft of restrictions. Trying to ship them in bulk is a huge pain with most postal services not willing to touch them (as their post often goes on passenger planes).
