One of my fondest memories of my Dad comes from the wonderful smell of him polishing his boots and showing me how to do the same. My children say the same about me, so this channel just warms my heart. I need to order some conditioners, creams, because all I have been doing is polishing......but not anymore. Watching these shoe care videos brings back childhood memories of when I shined my shoes almost every Sunday night, using a folding shoe holder on the pantry door, a brush, Kiwi wax, a rag for applying the wax and another for buffing to a ‘spit’ shine.

*NOTES ON CLEANING PROCESS* for myself but hopefully someone finds it helpful! 0:35 Remove laces 1:15 SURFACE GRIME REMOVAL Dry brush with horsehair brush (or wipe with rag) to get rid of surface dirt. Make sure to get into the groove near the welt line - you can also use a toothbrush for this. 2:20 RE SADDLE SOAP For more thorough cleaning, to get out the dirt embedded in the leather. They do not cover it in this video but I'm adding my notes here to consolidate things. Some of their other videos show the process in more depth. Add a spritz of water to your saddle soap and brush. Work up a lather and work the saddle soap into the boots to agitate and lift off the dirt. Remove the grimy soap using a paper towel or something. Don't douse your boots! When done cleaning, remove any remaining residue with a damp rag. 2:30 ALTERNATIVE: Use a damp rag to wipe down the boot to remove dirt, if there isn't a lot of it. Make sure to get into the welt groove area, and cover the tongue and heel block. 3:25 CONDITIONING & HYDRATING (Using Saphir Renovateur in this case). You can apply with a rag, with gloved hands, or with a brush. Feel free to add more if your boots are really dehydrated. 4:45 You're pretty much done (if you don't mind some scuffs or whatever) 5:38 Buffing out the boot 6:10 SHOE CREAM (not wax!!) To put colour back into the boots. Applying with a rag and rubbing it in. Be careful to avoid the stitches. (note: reason for not using wax here is because you don't want buildup) 7:40 / 8:40 Give it a few minutes to dry when done, then you can buff it out. 9:10 This would be the time to add wax for shine and/or weather protection. Here they add waterproofing spray instead.

Hello guys. After lace removal, I start with turning the boots upside down going after the welt line with the brush to let gravity help remove any trapped particles and dust. Then I wipe down the uppers with a damp rag before going after them with the brush. This minimizes any scratching when the brush moves from that welt line to the uppers. It also moisturizes the surface to take the conditioner better. I like Thursdays as much as the others, but have more Wolverine 1000 mile and Red Wings though. Thanks for your clarity and good advice. In advance, Happy New Year. We all need one don't we? DJ in Knoxville

Conditioning the leather is a must. Good vid, thanks for putting them out. And, had they not mentioned the fact they sell the Saphir products, I wouldn't've known. Hi, is it a serious problem if the stitching on the bottom of the soles wears and tears? Will the sole came off of that happens? I've seen it in many cases that the stitching of goodyear-welted boots tears
@iliketoflips4 жыл бұрын
It's not a serious problem. Many brands including Allen Edmonds and Thursday Boots don't really set their sole stitching into deep channels. Obviously that means that the stitches are going to wear out as soon as the sole begins to wear down. Personally, it bothers me. But what I've heard (I believe from Trenton & Heath) is that there's enough of the glue/cement in between the sole and mid-sole that it soaks into the stitching a bit. This causes that stitching to still hold effectively even if some of the outer loops get abraded away.

Very detailed video. Thank you. I have a question. Isn’t there a possibility that the conditioner pulls out some color? I tried conditioning my new boots and the cloth I used was turning brown and black again and again like my boots were super dirty. I used grangers leather conditioner. I have to mention that my boots (Levi’s Emerson) are dark brown and have some sort of black burn decoration. After putting conditioner and wax the boots are worse than it was before. The color is lighter and much of the finish gone. Maybe I did put much products on it and made coats on the leather that make em look a bit ugly. Any ideas to clean all this stuff from the leather without damaging it so I can start again with the right products and the correct way?
