Sailing Soulianis

Күн бұрын

Sailing is tough, and often uncomfortable. Anything that makes life easier or more comfortable onboard means you’ll sail more, and enjoy it more.
We’ve had a spinnaker/whisker pole onboard since a fellow sailor donated one to us in Mobile, Alabama. We’ve tried to rig it once or twice, but never had all the required gear to make it work. Now with the necessary lines and hardware rigged up, and a 24-hour downwind run ahead, the whisker pole is put to the test. It was glorious!
After a gentle downwinder from Cayo Costa, Lauren and Renata jump ship for the night. Kirk’s father joins him for a double-handed downwind run from Fort Myers to Marathon, surfing up to 7.5 knots in breaking waves, catching fish, snagging crab pots, and sharing secrets they’d never want anyone else to know.
Hope you enjoy!

Awesome sailing footage. Renata has seemed to settle into sailing life. Good to see your Dad enjoying a fast passage with you. Reminds me of good times with my Dad. More of that to come for us. Great episode.

This may be common knowledge, but it wasn’t to us. Our anchor snagged a large chain. The windlass picked up the chain, but when we hooked it with the boat hook and dropped the anchor we couldn’t hold the boat hook and lost it. Instead of a boat hook cleat a line and run it under the problem item and cleat the end. Drop the anchor to clear it and get it out of the way. Then you can just unclear one end of your line and drop it. A bit time consuming, but easy.

Good tip Ed! Had I not been able to pop it off with the boat hook, that sounds like a good secondary plan.

Not many people are aware that the Great Lakes are far rougher to sail than any ocean. As we started our Loop trip from Huron, Ohio and at the latter part of October, we were buffeted constantly and did a lot of motor sailing. Having a 110 Genacher saved or bacon many times. We had to abandon our trip due to health reasons (both in our mid seventies) and gave up sailing. Oh well, C’est la vie. Watching you provide couch comfort. Thanks to you both.

I'm afraid I was a bit emotional as you and your dad set sail on your adventure. We were not sailors, but I was gifted to spend lots of time with my dad growing up. He was a master woodsman, and he taught me so much about the woods and the balance of creation. As this is the closing hour of his 117th birthday, I was touched by the time you could spend with your dad. Thanks for sharing this with me. Never allow an opportunity to pass without exploiting time with your dad.

I got rid of the extension pole on my T37 and replaced it with a carbon fiber pole that is must a tad shorter than the regulation spinnaker pole. Much easier to handle and jibe and makes me want to pole out the jib more often because of its ease--as you are learning. I went with the Dutchman system because I did not like the idea of trying to look through a huge bag when looking forward. Seems to it is simpler than the stack pack and works well. FWIW. Come to Maine for a summer. Or go down to San Blas if you are adventurous when you daughter is a bit older.

Great to see another post from the family!! I am a little confused as to where your adventures are going in the future, I saw that you have sold Soulianis recently. Is a larger boat in store for the larger family, or are the adventures going to be more land based with the little for the time being?? Either way, looking forward to seeing more!!

Good "chapter" this month. I enjoy the sailing...and your baby is pretty cute. This comes from the mom's side I think. I read in "SAIL" magazine last night that some newer sail boats don't want to heave to. I don't want a boat that won't.

.... pure awesomeness ..... that front carrier thingy for Renata .... the concentration, or is it alertness watching while you where making the batter for the bananas coconut bread Lauren, it sure looked good by the way .... had to chuckle re the not wanting to leave the boat as much. Sorta goes hand in hand with your declaring when you also stated that it would be the last sailing for just the two of you and you did not know how your priorities would change and what your life would look like. That was me summing up what I took from what you said. .. smilin .. from what we see through your lens would have to say you have created a mighty fine balance and have adapted well .... love your hats, how the brim is bigger at the back ... just imagining Renata growing up on the beaches in remote places of the world. Taking part in all the water sports and exploring what the land has to offer .. quite something really! ... absolutely brilliant how you, Kirk make sure Lauren knows that she is appreciated, awesomeness to say the least .... Yup! .. bin there Kirk, where have finally done something and wished had done it sooner because it turned out to be a game changer, we live and learn. Stack-pack, yes. Maybe your next boat will have in-mast-furling, which you already know if it does or not. ..smilin ... observation ... I must point out that I am not a user of sunnies as the Auzies say. I notice that 2 of the 3 sets of peepers find it bright and do wear sunnies ..... looks like you had a good son, dad time there Kirk and a fun sail .... see you are closing in on the 100K sub milestone, well done team Soulianis ... thx for sharing .. as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans ....

This past weekend the western end of Lake Superior saw temps in the low 50's with lots of rain and some fog. You are sailing in south Florida in much better conditions and still found time to complain about dealing with sail ties and raising the main on a 37 footer. I hope there was a drink special or half-priced appetizers at Kirk's Pity Party. I will trade places with you any time you want. LOL!! Glad you were able to share a great sail with your dad.

Things like this used to be easily reported on active captain. Since Garmin took it over it’s a bit more of an arduous task. Nor is it as readily seen. Maybe someone else can share their experience as I haven’t checked it out again recently. But it would be great to have easy access to sharing that type of info again.

Please Do Not put the spinnaker pole between the shrouds! If the sheet breaks under load or you are hit with a big gust it will shove your pole forward under huge force which can break your pole or break your shroud. I was caught by an unexpected storm and my pole went flying into the forestay.

We were beat, very tired. Had already picked up 3 crab pots and were going to get in far too early to see. We didn’t want to risk motoring in the dark and there was nowhere that looked protected enough to anchor. So we decided to heave to with enough sea room to safely drift for a few hours. It ended up only being about 1.5 hours but it gave us an opportunity to refresh and give us a bit more light to work with.
