When I started learning Korean, the VERY first thing I learned was the Korean alphabet, as in the characters, even before I learned how to say hello. It was a good decision on my part, because now I can read anything in Korean (even if I don't know what it means yet), and I didn't get stuck relying on romanization. When learning a new word I actually ignore any romanization I see and focus on the characters instead because they make more sense to me than the romanization! Romanization throws me off because it really doesn't sound the same as the actual Korean word, and the characters are easier to read and understand, tbqh! My advice to anyone just getting into Korean is to ditch the romanization asap, you'll be glad you did! You can learn the alphabet in just a few days if you practice frequently and/or use flashcards. There are so many good sources these days. You can google it and print out some worksheets (free), you can download an app like duolingo (free), and there are also community tutors for low prices on italki.com. If you're serious about learning Korean, then start learning how to read/pronounce Korean characters right away. It will help you learn much faster, and your pronunciation will be so much better!

Yeah, I saw the romanizations on some song lyric translations, but I immediately noticed there was no correlation between the spelling and how the words were being pronounced. So I started listening really carefully and repeating what I heard. Then I got tired of that and decided, "I wanna learn to read, write, and speak Hangul!" So I looked up videos on the Hangul alphabet and it makes it soooooooo much easier.

i see many comments about how she sounds judgmental in the video, and how it’s a small difference and shouldn’t matter that much. well, first off in korea (as well as many other countries), the pronunciation has to be exact (or very close to exact) for locals to understand you the first time. if it’s incorrect even if you think it’s a “small difference” locals will be unimpressed. it’s also easy to misunderstand. it’s the same logic as you have to be precise with your pronunciation of chinese, as MANY phrases have the same pinyin spelling but different tones and slightly different punctuation. in english speaking countries, someone could talk with a foreign accent and their english wouldn’t be absolutely perfect, but it would be easy to understand most of the time, unless their accent was really thick and you’re not as good at interpreting accents. for an accent like hers, though, it’s pretty easy. however, this isn’t the case for korean as well as many other languages. so please don’t criticize her judgmental tone, she is simply trying to help you avoid these common mistakes that can have a negative effect on you in korea.

Exactly, I've noticed that a lot of words have different meanings depending on how they use them and I've even seen a video (I think it was in an episode of Running Man) where a Korean told another Korean to vocalise his words better so they wouldn't misunderstand him.
@Pa-1
@Pa-1 5 жыл бұрын
True, also sometimes the meaning of what we say may also change like ghaseyo and gheseyo differentiates between leaving and sending off someone. It is also in the spirit of enjoying the conversation with someone - when you are learning a language, take it from a native. Also pronunciation is a matter of practice so it helps if we vocalize what we are reading instead of simply reading in the mind.
@CytheriaXylia

I highly agree with this comment omg! Finally someone who gives a proper, understandable and clear explanation. Thank you! Kamsahamnida! I've been using an American app and it doesn't have the ability for me to CK my enunciation... I want to come visit Korea for a few years and want to speak Hangul if possible to share my love and respect for Korea. Thank you again for this awesome tutorial! :D

I understand the point of the video. But my advice for you out there who still use romanization as a way to learn Korean, don't get discourage to learn. My sister and her friends used to learn Korean without even knowing the Korean characters, went to Korea for several months and can communicate with the native Koreans just fine. Sure the pronunciation is somewhat a little bit different and sometimes they do get a little confuse with your pronunciation but it won't be as bad as how the video makes it look. And they are even kind enough to help you to correct your pronunciation so it's a good way of learning too. Don't be afraid to make mistake. However I agree with Lara. Romanization can help you to learn how to speak Korean quickly but it is better to learn the correct pronunciation and drop the romanization if you really want to fluently speak in Korean. It's either go big or go home, right?

BeleeIII But Koreans can mostly understand the bad pronunciations from Americans because almost every Korean studies English. So they have an idea of how Americans might pronounce words and what they mean.

BeleeIII I just started so it probably will get more difficult but I find learning the Korean characters unexpectedly easy. There is really a logic behind it in comparison to Japanese (which I don’t know but I’ve spend time learning hiragana and katakana) where I couldn’t find any logic and just had to learn everything by memory. (I didn’t even start with the kanji)

Jonna Heijke I am "fluent" in Korean, and the words you use for different sentences differ. No matter what, Americans or non-Koreans always have accents. Even Americans who lived in Korea for over 10 years. Just saying how it's harder as you go further in. (Harder words, correct sentences, and actual correct Korean pronunciations, which people can't usually copy, even me sometimes, living in America for my whole life, lol)

Eirene Kim oh! I actually meant my comment for the one above you! I was commenting on the learning of Hangul and that it is surprisingly easy. But yeah I totally agree with you. Even though I just started, the pronunciation is the most difficult so I understand that it is really hard or impossible to speak without accent when you’re not a native!

Oh haha! After not speaking Korean for a long time, I started losing my pronunciations, surprisingly enough! Luckily, I'm getting it back from speaking Korean more often at home!

Dear kpop army stan people things... 1. Do not learn a language because of hot guys who live on the other side of the world and don't know you exist 2. Don't move to a country because of some music thats popular there. Thats like moving to America because you like country music 3. Learn a language because you like the culture, country, and generally the REAL Korea, not the pop music. The same with moving to South Korea. Korea is not a magical wonder land where all the guys are hot kpop singers and life is perfect, it is has country jus5 like evreywhere els and has pros and cons. Learn all you can before you make a big commitment like moving or learning a language!

I agree mostly, but i don't think that learning a language for whatever reason hurts you, even if you do it because of hot guys. All the other things 100 % facts though!
