english youngsters/young people have now picked up the americanism of saying "give me or can I get" when asking for say a coffee instead of the much more polite and english way "please may I have a cup of tea/coffee/sandwich etc. thankyou" don't you think that sounds so much better when you add a please and thank you? never forget the mark of an englishman is his good manners!

I have always been taught table manners. Not necessarily etiquette, but always good manners. We don't think it's rude to say "pass the salt please" and afterward, "thank you". We don't think it's rude, when at the bar to say, "I'd like a beer please". Though you would say, "can I get a beer" that is also correct. My own daughter says it like you also, yet I didn't teach her that. I have always just said, "I'll have a beer please" or "I'd like a beer please". Please & Thank You, Please & Thank You were drilled into our heads. My native tongue is English but I'm always learning new things! Great video! :)

In Poland we say something like "one bread, please". We don't like so long forms like "could you...", etc. Some people say "I want" but it's definitely not the best option.

I don't think you need to say 'may' in a restaurant - you are paying them, after all. 'Can' or 'could' will be fine. You could say 'may' to your aunt.

You are right in thinking that your friend is rude. Manners apply to all cultures, so in Spanish one should also say, could I have some bread, please. Podría darme pan, por favor? Or, tenga la bondad de dejarme pasar. So, don’t let them convince you that being rude is normal, even among friends and family.

I have learned that using the past tense in a "do you mind" question is even more polite than the present tense one. Can you confirm that? Example: Do you mind if I open the window? Perhaps more polite: Do you mind if I opened the window?

@@pilo11 It's still more polite to ask permission to do something, instead of asking for approval of something you've already done, because in the second example, you are putting the person on the spot, which is not a polite thing to do. It's no big deal either way, but it's clearly more polite to ask someone for their permission, prior to you doing a certain thing.

My brain’s a bit rusty on this, but I’m pretty sure that the ‘opened’ in the example above is subjunctive mood in the conditional tense. It would be the same as saying, ‘(if I) were to open (the window)’. And is perfectly fine English usage.

Now “Do you mind that I’ve (I have) opened the window” would make sense in the meaning that the window has been opened already and they are asking you if it’s alright after the fact.

In Spanish saying "Give Me" is not rude at all, it depends on the tone you use. It an expression for 95 per cent of situations.

Exactly! Not rude at all, especially if you add "por favor". And in Spanish, it is completely wrong to use the verb "tener" (have) when asking for something. Many English speakers will say "puedo tener" (can I have) when asking for something in Spanish, which is completely incorrect in Spanish.
