The is the first time I've heard of not scaling up from a sketch, and you know what, I get it. The energy just would not translate from sketch to recreation on a larger scale. There would be disappointment, as I'd have a preconceived notion about how it "should look" and of course, it would never look the same. The next thing I would love to see from you is a video of you creating a large work. That would be amazing!!

Love the allusion to Moro Bay. Seeing the blue arch in the notebook, and seeing bits of it in the larger painting, changed my experience of the piece. It reminds me of my own visit there. Thank you.

I completely agree: what's the point if it's not creative? In any event, in my experience, "painting big" demands a big rethink and different techniques, even while reflecting the same feel.

If I’m creating something at a small scale as a finished creative piece, I don’t really think of it as eventually being bigger. However, I will work on thumbnails (at whatever smaller size I choose) to work out how I would like the bigger painting to flow, but in that case I don’t consider them finished pieces. They are just ‘play’ pieces. So in that sense, I do get what you’re saying. I wish I could do more abstract work. it came easier to me when I was younger, but now I find it harder. Thank you for your videos. 😊

Interesting vid. I just tried enlarging a sketch i did in 1994. So it's tricky to remember exactly what it was like…. But you are right. There isn't much point in just copying…because apart from anything else…..scale has a lot to do with an image, and scaling up doesn’t necessarily work.

Lewis I like your work but your comments are contradictory. The sketches are a good reference to stimulate later studio work whether they are 'copied' sort of, or 'developed' or a reference towards 'new' work, and that's where it ends. If that's basically what you are trying to say then say it succinctly and more articulately for goodness sake. On KZbin waffle is awful.

Apologies for my inarticulate waffle. Happy new year.

Happy New Year Lewis I'm interested in Plein Air landscape but not realistic, more expressive Impressionism. I find your abstract work similar to where I started purely using acrylic but now with oils I'm trying to slowly see where it takes me. I'll have to watch more of your channel for some ideas etc. Best wishes for 2024, Cheers.

@@LewisNobleArtistI don’t see the waffle! I found it exactly on spot: don’t take a small painting and simply expect to make the same thing bigger. Things in nature do not scale up quite like that. You said it well and persuasively. Don’t change your style one bit!
