It's an interesting topic, but your essay seems very disjointed and in the end, its own title becomes meaningless because you don't give many realistic examples of how to cross into the film industry. You gave 2 examples of podcasts, both by established Hollywood stars, not newbie storytellers. The podcast market has been oversaturated for several years now because everyone and their mother wants to try their luck, making it once again hard to break out without a very unique idea and a decent marketing budget.
@Zenovation-zen3 ай бұрын
Everything you do requires marketing and sales, that's a hustle you cannot avoid in any industry. As I understand, this was just suggesting a few alternatives to traditional paths to actually tell your stories, especially those with lower budgets, with a hope of getting noticed at some point. The whole film industry is oversaturated. A saturated market just means that it works well if you do it well, there is no shortcut.
@matman0000003 ай бұрын
@@Zenovation-zen Well the reason filmmakers rely on short films is because they can succeed at film festivals and gain recognition without expensive marketing, while also acting as a proof of concept for a feature film (as with Bottle Rocket, Whiplash or Babadook).
@alexalexis78993 ай бұрын
Agreed, and AI will also bring everyone and their mothers into every corner or audiovisual storytelling. In 10 years, the medium will be so densely populated with products that it will be virtually impossible for anything to get traction to the point of giving anyone a career. It will be, quite literally, akin to winning the lottery - completely out of your hands and just as improbable.
@Dr_LanMan3 ай бұрын
This whole thing feels Ai generated, i know the voice is ai 100%, im not sure about the script but i would guess that it was partially made with ai. Even the editing choices seem a little off at points and ai generated editing is a new thing so idk
@Dr_LanMan3 ай бұрын
not to mention the actual ai generated images used throughout. I just took a quick look through the channel, started 8 months ago, has an obviously ai generated bio, and some videos and shorts talking directly about ai and how it's the next step for filmaking
@MichaelV-rl7yv3 ай бұрын
I can't help but find this video to be wildly misguided. The only thing that will get you a proper path to becoming a good director is making (short) films. Podcasts?
@TheFilmist3 ай бұрын
The reason short films don't lead to film careers much anymore is complicated and weird, but the primary one is that the industry has become more insulated by wealth than ever, and as a result, it's eating itself. But Film is not the Film Industry.
@Psyclonus7Ай бұрын
They lead to careers if the right people see them.
@kuramobay2445Ай бұрын
You've got it wrong. The aim of any audiovisual material is audience engagement. To promote a feature film it's necessary to engage and demonstrate potential. The industry is risk-averse, the executives want to know exactly what they are buying into. This is why proof of concept films are crucial for new dramatic storytelling talent.

LOL. Essay films and narrative podcasts are very different from conventional films. Just because you are good at making essay films and podcasts does not mean you can also make a good feature film. There are a lot to learn to make a film. Filmmaking is combination of all art forms and way more harder than you think. So the only way to become a filmmaker is to make films after films, whether it is short or feature. There is no alternative. You will know how making a real film is so much differnt from making essay films and podcasts when u start making one. Grab a camera and make one ,dude. Stop bulffing on internet.
@jn-xw3cq3 ай бұрын
Agreed. Conventional films require practice upon practice to learn. Each film whether a short or feature teaches you and your crew a gillizion things. Some of what not to do and some of what to keep doing. It's sad that people think they can't or shouldn't make short films because they don't make money. And yeah, they don't really, but they pay in experience and connections you build with cast and crew. Film shouldn't just be about what works financially in the modern mediascape.

I agree, I'm in the middle of making a short film right now and I've already learned so much compared to just making goofy KZbin videos.

@bluebirdproducts-pro3 ай бұрын
Well except this wasn't about getting better at your craft, but more about attracting attention. You have to admit, even if you make a decent movie, unless you brand it very well, it might never get the recognition that you'd like.
@adammonroeproductions3 ай бұрын
@@bluebirdproducts-pro Yes that's true. I think there are alternate paths to making movies these days; you CAN just buildup a KZbin audience and then get that audience to fund your movies, many people have done it - RLM, Cinemassacre, ect. - but usually, the movies don't turn out very well (although there are some exceptions). It's very hard to build and maintain a KZbin channel and a social media presence and still have time to do pretty much anything else well, but I'm sure we'll see someone properly pull it off someday.

I enjoyed your suggestions for alternative approaches to storytelling. Some good thoughts. I think getting your stories out there, in whatever form, and reaching/building an audience is the most important step. Take whatever you have, whatever works best for you, and find a way to tell stories with it. I am a little disappointed with your recommendation for using AI created voices. There are so many talented actors out there looking to collaborate and show their skills, why use software that has literally been built on stealing their voices? The best thing to bring to your stories is real human authenticity. Leave the artificial to the studios.

Interesting thoughts here, except for one thing. Wilson's show was canceled over a year ago because it couldn't perform. So yeah finding alternative forms of storytelling is great but you still have to engage an audience longterm. Clearly his concept didn't translate well to the audience he was asked to entertain.

You could've easily mentioned making no-budget features too. Tubi filmmakers are killing it and making money while they are at it. They are shooting their movies with no budget. Sure, most of them are awful. But if you have talent and experience, maybe you can make something that can also attract the attention of decision-makers.

This was great! I think short films are still an amazing way to hone your craft and meet other filmmakers at festivals, but I hear you on the evolving array of options we have. KZbin is just as valid as a festival and you might get a lot more eyeballs on your work that way anyway. I made a 5-episode narrative podcast called "Battle of the Bald" during the pandemic to stay creative and it was a really fun medium to explore. If anyone's a fan of the form, I'd love for you to check it out.

the canvas of thinking about audiovisual design and storytelling needs to be expanded, the tag of "filmmaker" and "industry" and "crew" is often a excuse of lack of skill and status seeking behavior. Don't worry if you are a person of skill, industry will come to you. They definitely came to influencers. If your limitation cannot show potential, nor will abundance. Great video,
