That's because it's rarely defamation. Listing opinions, like someone is a jerk isn't defamation. It has to be factual statements that are lies, and (in the USA) meant to harm the person's reputation.

Defendant seems to be someone to whom facts just get in the way of their argument. He claimed in the Yelp review that he had filed a police report but never did. In various places, he claimed the plaintiff demanded $3,000 or $4,000 or $6,000. He's someone I literally wouldn't believe if his tongue came notarized.

Glad the plaintiff won this one! He had me laughing. The defendant is a liar. He lied and said whatever he needed to to delay the carpenter from stopping. Luckily the plaintiff did have some sense to realize the deal. Though, he never should’ve started without full deposit. JM was right when she said if it didn’t have the full deposit at the beginning. Then he would never have it and the rest to pay by the end.

His arrogance shows when asked to take the reviews down and he says 'I'll get my people to do it'. He kept changing the amount from 3000 to 4000 to 6000. So he had a narrative he wanted to give and the facts didn't really matter. He probably made up a story for his wife, she responded and he took her response as justification. Shady behaviour.

Ummm... verbal is hearsay for one. Especially if the parties disagree. You can't decide who's truthful or not. Hearsay is usually not used as evidence in ANY court. Secondly if you did have a verbal agreement but then a text agreement that both agree to, the latter becomes the agreement.
