I went straight from a squier strat to an Omen 8 multiscale as an absolute beginner, this is exactly what i'm looking for. Having some scale exercises to start off makes the extra 2 strings a lot less intimidating.

@@maxj9204 big leap! That's exciting though! I'm glad this stuff can be of some help. That's exactly why I wanted to make it 😊

That last exercise must really drill things in, from a practical application standpoint Gonna work on this on the 7 string

Definitely one of those "I learned this at jazz school" exercises, haha. But you're right, it really hits things home in a way that sticks.

Thanks for this. I just got a C-8 Evil Twin last week and have been really struggling to find something cohesive between what I've practiced for years and those pesky extra strings. Your PDFs are really helpful. A teacher I had years ago told me once I learned all of the modes in all of the positions, it will all click, but it never really was explained how to go about that other than brute force. I think the last part of this lesson really shows a much better way to start accomplishing something similar.

It's such a mind-bender to add those extra strings and feel like you've forgotten everything you've learned! I'm glad this video and resource will be of use to you! And yes, "learning all the modes in all positions helps," but I'm all about making those big tasks attainable by breaking them down. Hopefully there will be good tips in videos to come as well!

Thank you for these excellent videos! This may be a basic question, but what are the practical benefits of practicing the scales in order of the circle of fifths?
@eightmetalstrings10 ай бұрын
That's a great question. Firstly, it serves just to organize and keep track of all the keys in a logical order. Helps me make sure I don't skip the keys I don't like. Secondly, and more importantly, Western harmonies often move and resolve in the direction of the circle. The most prominent chord change V-I (G to C in the key of C) is the best example of this. If you string together all the V-I's that can possibly exist, it literally creates the circle (moving counter clockwise.) So really, the circle is a result of how harmony is commonly used, and not the other way around. So that's why we practice that way. Hope that helps!

I think I made the mistake of having my 8-string be the first stringed instrument I own. I skipped 6 and 7 purely through pride and ego.

Oh, not many people do that! That's very interesting. I always was curious if it was possible and what extra challenges someone would face. If you ever want to chat, I be interested to hear about your experience.
