I was favoring Ilia, but then I went back and rewatched Holloway v. Poirier. Despite the fact that Max lost that fight, I noticed how much his style has changed since then and it made me realize that he has the necessary skill set to shut down Ilia if he implements a sound game plan. To name a few improvements: - His power has finally matured as he enters his prime - He is more actively including his kicks are part of his combinations - He fights more squared to check kicks, which gave him big problems before - He actually demonstrates defense instead of relying on his offensive volume to BE his defense, with lots of step backs and better at cutting angles - He's more patient The Volk trilogy was perhaps the most important thing that ever happened to Max's career in terms of his improvements. Despite the fact that he lost the trilogy, as well as that fight to Poirier, I think he's a better fighter today than he's ever been, and saying that he has struggled with heavy handed combination punchers in the past may not be relevant anymore.

Max used to be known as a kicker. Watch his run to the 145 title, he was kicking the shit out of bodies at range and counterstriking people as they rush in. The boxing heavy approach was adopted sometime around the Aldo rematch. Max is going back to his kick heavy ways, he kicked the shit outta Pettis in 2016. And he has always been defensively good, he rolls with strikes well.

Tim if you playback combinations you can see them way clearer if you playback at 0.25 or 0.5 speed. If you hit the settings bar in the bottom of the video and then go to playback speed you can slow it down so we can watch it clearer, I think it would make your breakdowns 10x betters, even though they are already super fucking solid.

Max's most effective technique is his body-body-head combos as his opponent is backing up, like the one in the fifth that rocked Gaethje. Ilia recognized that and intercepted Max as he started his combo, standing his ground and throwing circuit-breaking hooks that forced Max to reset. Brilliant strategy and execution by Ilia.

Not saying max isn’t a good fighter but basing his performance on this fight can be a bit deceptive. Fighting a guy with a broken nose makes things quite a bit easier, max should have finished him in the second, because the fight was over at the end of the first
