There are a lot of qualification to his "don't turn them off" argument. If you're not using them there's zero advantage to leaving them on so even a very tiny advantage to leaving them off means you should leave them off.

The biggest drain on your phone's battery is your mobile data antenna. Just by turning it off, I've extended my phone's battery life from a couple days to several weeks. Don't know if you can do this with iPhone but pretty much every Android phone should have this option built-in and easy to access from the pull-down.

In Italy the mobile connection is usually great, and very fast. Mobile plans are very cheap and come with hundreds of GB, sometimes unlimited, all under 10 Euros. So using WIFI is not really necessary and comes with safety problems. Better to stay with mobile data in you're not at home.

I have a iphone 12 pro max and if I forget to turn off bluetooth overnight my battery level is significantly lower the next morning. If it's off, battery only loses a few percentage points. So, I have to disagree on the bluetooth bit, at least in my real experience.

Just to correct you, only if you are with de-googled android, you can have “some” confidence for bt and wifi not scanning in background. Because, while iOs it’s obvious, apple can do what they like, with android, ALL google apps are beyond admin-permission and they can scan and be active in background without your knowledge or ability to disable. Find some serious logging app and see what is going on with your phone ALL the time no matter screen on or off ;)

What I found a real drain is using GPS position. What I did not not yet understood is if leaving the Geo localization option on, without actively using the GPS, impact the battery. (but also here there might be privacy reasons to prefer to have it off)

BT should be off unless you need it. You don’t need another trackable network connection. Same with WiFi. Keep it off if you don’t need it. It’s better to have your phone in LTE mode instead of 5G which needs more power too.

That's why I always buy a phone w headjack. I seldom use Bluetooth. I switch it off constantly unless I want to use it even though it consume not much power. Still it will waste you battery power not to mention it's a security threat to allowing an access point open constantly. You be surprised you have apps that switch on your Bluetooth without your permission. For wifi I'll just connect to it constantly because of messaging apps.

On all of the phones I’ve owned I’ve seen a very noticeable difference in battery life when I’ve turned off WiFi while I sleep. It’s no doubt all the applications phoning home for any new info. The more apps with background internet access, the more the battery is going to drain. Turn off Wi-Fi while you sleep and you wake up with much more of your battery.

so there are two things that could be going one: 1. You have something set to backup your device only when there is wifi and you are not using your phone. or 2. You have some app installed that is sucking up your data - this could be a legit app or malware. Look at your data usage and the apps and that could tell you which one it is.

This was an interesting video, it surely was this way some time ago but technology have come a way since then and now wifi and Bluetooth are more power efficient. Still for security matters is better not to let your Bluetooth is you're kit using it as there are some Bluetooth exploits that can be used to get some degree of access to your mobiles.

I'm on T-Mobile home internet and T-Mobile cellular. Excellent coverage where I live. At home, if phone wi-fi is turned on, it automatically switches to wi-fi calling - and the call quality sucks! Why is that? I've turned off wi-fi and wi-fi scanning, as I have an unlimited plan for both services (no throttling) - unless I walk into a faraday cage (like a hospital) and can't get a cell signal and need "free" wi-fi.

Great answer and always love your information! A cautionary note though depending on the circumstances. I worked with a delivery company. I had my phone set to battery saving mode As a results because this was the software that the dispatching company was using, I would not get any dispatches. So I had to turn the battery saving mode off in order to be able to get dispatches from the software. So I would say about 98% right except in very rare circumstances. Without arguing whether you're right or wrong re Bluetooth power use, our local council uses Bluetooth MAC address logging for monitoring traffic flow. They have devices built into the traffic lights, which monitor the time taken for a Bluetooth device to move between traffic lights. That this system is in use and works, tends to refute your statement about how a Bluetooth device acts, when not in pairing mode.

Experienced when living in UAE. Connect to the bank via app. In the background the bluetooth was switched on, did not notice. But then soon, the battery was drained. Found this out from running scans on Android phone. Since then, always disconnected the bluebooth after done with banking app. Odd, I know.

@@apocalic I use my phone more than I used to, but I'm still rarely below 70% when I put it on the charger in the evening. In the past I'd usually be in the low 80s which means most of a week to use a full charge. For those of us that aren't heavy users BT and WiFi use a higher percentage of the total consumption. FWIW, I occasionally charge my 2012ish Motorola RAZR. Because the phone is retired the mobile data is turned off, as well as other unnecessary stuff, and the 12 year old battery takes a month to go dead.
