Every aspiring photographer should own a monopod, particularly if you plan to make your living taking photos. It's absolute that you have one, even if you don't use it every time. The only exception would be those who shoot exclusively with medium and large format.

Excellent discussion. I am a Manfrotto/Bogen fan, both for tripods and monopods, and their heads (as you note, the Italian-made units are almost indestructible).

Excellent tutorial on monopods. Having essential tremors I use my monopods frequently where tripods are not practical. Another accessory that works well with them is an L bracket that allows switching between portrait and landscape easily.

@denisroy81 agreed my anxiety causes minor shakes in my hands, I often find myself reaching for my tripod and using it one legged. The weight is the biggest downside because I like to shoot in the woods.
