The reef fishing head boats had the anchor retrieval rope on their anchor lines. We used to put it on rebar grapple hooks. Saved our twenty dollar anchors more than once. Looks like a refreshing boat ride at the falls.

Thanks for showing off our Erie Canal - a surprise on a sailing channel. I live in one of the little towns on the "long level" section between Rochester & Lockport. We have always thought the canal was beautiful. When we were kids, they used to let us ride the lift bridges up & down when a boat came through.

My Uncle (godfather) lived in Niagara Falls, Ontario most of his life. We used to visit about once a year until I was 20. The Horseshoe falls are MASSIVE and getting bigger every year due to erosion. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Did you happen to notice on the Canadian side the hotel with the exterior elevators painted like lady bugs?

A lot of those earlier canal stages looked like areas of the European canal network....even some of the boats. One of those bridges dropping on you bridge would definately ruin your day..⛵😂 The speeds restricted because the prop wash and wake would destroy the canals banks and bed... They were lined with clay to seal them in some places .. in the UK and France. But they were initially 1hp.... horse drawn..till steam engines took over.
@SailingLifeonJupiter2 жыл бұрын

I've heard that they shut the water off at night because just upstream of the falls there is a water power plant and they take most of the water away from the falls. If the plant wasn't there than the falls would be like 20 times or even more than that powerful. I've also heard if they let all the water go over the falls that it would erode the falls back to the great lakes and drain the lakes. I've never been there but would like to experience it in person some day.
@SailingLifeonJupiter2 жыл бұрын
You're probably right Robert.. Was pretty specy
@scottwheeler24942 жыл бұрын
They throttle it back at night. They could shut it off but it’s all ran by international agreement nowadays as they want to maximize electrical generation and tourist view and minimize erosion. It eventually will erode back but that’s many centuries from now.

Do you attach the anchor recovery line every time? Or is it a permanent attachment and if so how do you store it on deck? I feel like it would create a mess and a hassle to anchor each time. I've heard of ppl zip tying the recovery line to the chain itself to reduce that hassle. Yanking on it would free it so it can be used. Thoughts?
@SailingLifeonJupiter2 жыл бұрын
No we don't use it all the time...but usually where ever there's likely to be snags... Cable ties wouldn't work, coz the chain has twists.. A single wrap around the chain and your trip line is no longer pulling the head of the anchor, but pulling on the chain itself. Cheers

That's great assuming no one steals Bob. As they did in my case. I now loose every 20 metres tie to the chain. I use a float rope. If needed its realised very easily unties when pulled
@SailingLifeonJupiter2 жыл бұрын
There's no perfect solution hey Bruce...cheers
@brucesinclair29812 жыл бұрын
@@SailingLifeonJupiter their is no perfect solution.. To me the rocna anchor has one major problem. It's that as the boat drags the anchor digs deeper and deeper into the sea bed.trying to hold the boat I've had the bar 300 below in mud. I've had to wait to low tied and dig it out. A retrieval line will not help So there is no perfect solution to the problems that can occur with anchorring. There is a breaking link that work or you can use a thin bolt . The chain is attached at the rear of the anchor where you attached the rope. It's then bolted or use the link to connect at its proper fixing point. Under normal working loads the link holds. But when it breaks the anchor is pulled out As I've said their is no perfect solution to anchoring only problem that need to be solved.
