The song is about how being overly paranoid about harm can be harmful in of itself. "Don't talk to strangers because they are only there to do you harm." Well in the real world, strangers almost never hurt me and if I never talk to them, then I may save myself from getting hurt, but I'll never make any friends if I never talk to strangers.

Cece! Ronnie James Dio was a rock legend and God, hence the name 'Dio'. One of the greatest vocalists of all time, fronted 5 bands and was an epic songwriter, ALL of his music is deep. Check out live versions of his music, like Freddie Mercury, his stage presence was phenomenal adding to his talent. Check out the LIVE VERSIONS of the song 'Stargazer' and 'Man on the Silver Mountain' (the 14:45 minute live version) by the band Rainbow. Also check out 1980's live versions of this song, 'Children of the Sea', 'Rainbow in the Dark', 'Heaven and Hell' (which he wrote when he was in Black Sabbath but also performed with his solo band) and any other live songs from the band 'Dio'. (proverbs 14:12) the most common examples are found in relationships. you may meet someone and fall head over heels for them, but what you're really falling for is the image they project. the real person underneath may be deceptive, and could only be using you for their own selfish purposes. conversely, you may meet someone who irritates and annoys you at first, but later as you get to know them better, they turn out to be a wonderful person inside. to me, the message of the song is to look past superficial things and find out what's really underneath.

In the liner notes to the 2003 compilation Stand Up And And Shout: The Anthology, Ronnie James Dio had this to say: “I was very angry at this time, coming out of Sabbath, and it was reflected in the songs on Holy Diver. The way I saw the world, anyone who wasn’t family or a close friend was poised to cut me open with a knife. That’s how I felt. This was a negative statement of my own disenchantment, and I was projecting it out to anyone who would listen.” (Genius Databank) By Sabbath, he means the band Black Sabbath, which he fronted from 1979/80 to 82/83. Apart from what the statement says, it's clearly also about the shadow self: "you know me, you've touched me, I'm real / I'm forever the one that lets you look and see and feel me / I'm danger, *I'm the stranger / I'm darkness and anger and pain, the evil song to sing inside your brain / drives you insane*". Conflicted feelings of having been hurt, feeling threatened by the outside world, wanting to shut everything and everyone out for fear of getting hurt even more, but also being aware of the part the inner demons are playing in all of this. That's what I take away from it.

@@CC2Cents_ Y'know what, I've thought about it a little bit more, and from a psychological perspective, this might actually come down to a (inner) dialogue between the inner child and the shadow self. In the first part the (scared) inner child is talking, in the second part the shadow self, and in the third part it's the child again. Notice how the voice changes from one part to another? I wouldn't be surprised if the child-like sound right at the beginning was chosen with that in mind. "Don't talk to strangers" is a warning that's usually told to little children. Question remains, "who" (in the sense of the inner voices) is it in the "Don't let them inside your mind.." intermission?

Dio loves his metaphors. I enjoy this song to me it seems him struggling with his inner demons because the fear of people is often justified yet its unavoidable and truly listening to your self doubt will destroy your "self" as quickly as if you do ignore their advice. to paraphrase another dio line. the steel truth between the velvet lies. we walk the knife's edge.

Whether it's making wishes, smelling flowers or dreaming of women, not everything is what it appears to be. Everything in this world can lead down a rabbit hole of distractions and dead ends, finding one caught up in a life and world that one doesn't even want. All of this because what looked and sounded good from the outside i.e shiny objects from a distance, was a sort of mirage. Don't Talk To Strangers, breaks this spell, by being strikingly ironic, unmasking an illusion or deception by being incongruent to one's expectations. This 1983 song in the end really doesn't give you an answer but is more like the saying: "Losing an illusion makes you wiser than finding a truth." - Ludwig Borne.

Great reaction! Just want to say, Dio wasn't just an awesome vocalist and performer, he was a wonderful person. He always gave his fans time. After late shows he always stayed until he talked to every fan around the tour bus. He was know to remember fans he had met years ago. I recommend checking out Lizzy hale talking about Dio.

If you are looking for a story in song form try the concept album 'Magica' by Dio. No need to do a reaction to the entire album but it is well worth spending an hour just listening to it on your own. The very last track is an 18-ish minute track of Dio narrating the story behind the album. Each song on the album fits a portion of the story he tells at the end.. so you can kinda look at it as the story being told actually ties all of the songs together in a cohesive manner. If you want to do a reaction to any of the songs instead of listening to the entire album (I personally recommend just listening to the album and not bothering with a reaction) then I would say the songs 'Eriel', 'Turn To Stone', and 'Otherworld' would be good for reactions. In truth, however, pretty much anything Dio lent his vocal skills to will be golden and reaction-worthy. Such a loss to the world when he passed.

Dio uses a lot of metaphors in his lyrics, making them at times difficult to interpret, but as far as your interpretation, I'd say you're on the right track. I think the song is about bad advice. The title of the song sounds a bit legit, but it eventually will cause loneliness. Similarly, smelling flowers isn't something to avoid. Nor do women only bring you down. So then the "I" of the song introduces himself as an evil stranger to run away from. I think this is cynical. Never trusting someone is equally as dangerous as always trusting everyone. Likewise, strangers have a high probability to be fine people. Meanwhile, a lot of abuse is done by acquaintances of the victim. It's just silly to live by a generic statement like "Don't talk to strangers" BTW, this is my fav Dio song! Although there are a lot of contenders.

Lyrically it is a song that has a lot of occult connotations, too many to give you an overall description here, but for example when he says ' don't write in starlight or the words may come out real' - alludes to the nature of whatever it is that you're practicing (weather it may be evocation, invocation, or casting a spell or curse etc.) depending on many factors there are certain hours and days and weeks and month's that must be observed when performing the magic you wish to accomplish, when performed at the wrong hour, day, week, month etc. it can be extremely dangerous to to you possibly even resulting in your death, or at the very least will be completely ineffecacious. When he says in the lyrics ' don't go to heaven because it's really only hell alludes to spiritual entities that you encounter some are benign while others though they may at first appear to be benign are actually malevolent and may be trying to trick you and may incur wrath toward you, this is especially true in scrying and most forms of Goetia and Goetic theurgy, it's all related to occult science of which there are so many!

Hi Cece he wasn’t a bad singer but unfortunately for me I was into 2 bands where he took over as the singer when I was young, Ian Gillian in Deep Purple and Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath. and I judge the bands from that and never got into his band I think he suited Rainbow but not the other 2 nice reaction , if you get round to Deep purple or black sabbath make sure it’s early stuff much much better 👍

Dio was never in Deep Purple. David Coverdale took over from Ian Gillan. Ironically, Ian Gillan succeeded Dio in Black Sabbath. @cece_2_cents, if you continue down this path, you'll find this is all one big happy (or not so happy) family.

@@Distant394 I'd also respectfully disagree that he didn't suit Sabbath. They recorded some great songs; Children of the Sea, Falling off the Edge of the World, Die Young, Over and Over, Sign of the Southern Cross being some of my personal favorites. But I know this is a subject of considerable controversy. Just don't write them off for the sole reason that it's not Ozzy singing. Have you seen the 2007 recordings under the moniker of Heaven and Hell?

I sort of long gave up on rock music from mid 80’s probably coincide with getting married having kids sort of differed away from it so il have a listen a bit later I’m biased because that’s life we all like our favourites and those we are comfortable with I do listen to vol 4 now and then as I do with a lot of Hawkwind or iron maiden but I don’t stick to 1 genre anymore but I will have a listen , cheers 👍
