Dio had a long and successful career. Please check out Dio songs such as The Last In Line, We Rock, Egypt (The Chains Are On), Holy Diver and Sunset Superman. Before his 3 brief stints with Black Sabbath (last iteration was in the mid-2000's and they called it Heaven & Hell), he had a brief and amazing time with the band Rainbow with guitarist Ritchie Blackmore in the mid-70's. Songs such as Man on the Silver Mountain, Stargazer, Sixteenth Century Greensleeves were totally amazing.

I have a little different idea in terms of definition….to me, a “reaction” is when you let it play and we watch the emotional expressions and hear the quick vocal reactions as it plays…pausing a couple times here and there if more than a few words really need to be said…..anything more than that is an “analysis”. Just the way I see and feel about it.

But check out the DIO version. Or check out Ozzy than type in 'Dio-War Pigs' and see Dio sing it with Sabbath and you'll see how it was SUPPOSED to sound. All Ozzy era songs the vocals are the same tune as the riff, BECAUSE OZZY CAN'T SING! Ronnie wrote as a musician, a vocalist, a talent, not just a drunken clown on stage. There's a video of Dio and Ozzy singing War Pigs as a duet that's kind of fun to watch! You can see Ozzys weak, frail voice, than Dios POWERHOUSE vocals come in. Quite a difference!

You've just discovered "the granddaddy of metal". Technically the older version w/ Ozzy was the dawn of that - often Ozzy was called the "Godfather of Metal". Dio had definite stage presence. Rodney James Dio was a true performer - very theatrical. You commented on his vocal capability. Most fans and critics agree he had one of the greatest of all time metal voices - top 5 pretty much across the board. Probably top 3. And yah Dio, pretty much started the "devil horns rock on" hand signal. You are turning into a true metal head my guy!!! This is a good thing! We love embracing new fans. One thing about metal fans - most of us are truly some of the nicest people around - truly. I know that seems counterpoint to popular belief but many metal fans are "outcasts" in some form or fashion or were at some point, and so most of us just want to embrace and be embraced as a sort of brotherhood. My wife and I took my son (18) to an Iron Maiden show last week. It was his first metal concert. He told me he was amazed by how truly friendly and genuine everyone seemed. (recent season of Stranger Things illustrated perfectly how headbangers from the 80s were perceived vs reality).

You have a good ear for metal vocalists. Dio is in the highest echelon along with Rob Halford and a few select others. Lead guitarist Tony Iommi is one of the true riffmasters of the genre. Ronnie learned the devil horns gesture from his grandmother. He said she would do it to ward off evil spirits. I saw Sabbath in 81 when they were on tour with Blue Oyster Cult and it's crazy to think that it was over 40 years ago. The Ozzy portrait tattoo on my arm thanks you for reacting to this. Yeah it's an old Italian gesture called the "corna" or horns, but was to ward off the evil eye. My grandmother would use that gesture all the time. Dio started using this sign when he was with Black Sabbath. Ozzy used to give the peace sign in concerts, and Dio decided he also needed to use a hand gesture, but didn't want to copy Ozzy so he decided to use the evil eye gesture.

DIOl was one of the best all-time singers that ever lived for heavy metal or any genre. And he did bring that hand symbol to the heavy metal community. He actually took it from his grandmother which is supposedly supposed to be some form of Italian folklore to do warning off evil spirits. Anyway other songs you must hear him sing are Sign of the Southern Cross , Children of the Sea or Neon nights. Or you can look up Rainbow and check out songs like Man on the Silver Mountain,. His ultra versatile side of singing the melodic song Catch the Rainbow or you can hear him sing Long live Rock and Roll or Gates of Babylon. Then there's his solo stuff especially the Holy Diver album. Holy Diver, Stand up and Shout, Rainbow in the Dark and especially another very versatile song Don't talk to S.trangers highly recommend. Anyway he was a true legend RIP - 😇❤️ and he still is to the heavy metal community and will always be.

Dio is a vocal god. Since his passing there is a new band from Los Angeles that you might want to take a look at. The band is Liliac and they do "Holy Diver" a Dio cover. They are a group of siblings. You won't regret is...

You are so precise with your reviews. I love the way you point out so many things instead of just "ooh, good song". Your attention to details is amazing, and taking the time and energy to learn the lyrics first and study up on the song a bit first, shows not just a ratings clout chaser, but genuinely interested in learning. If I could give 2 thumbs up likes I would. (my apology for the length of this post, my guy). I hear you on the "mom would have said this was devil music". Many non metal fans easily mischaracterize it as such. And yes there are some who push a 'satanic message'; so too are there several satanic rappers. Most like yourself who get exposed to metal after being only into other genres are usually quite taken by how deep and profound their lyrics are. Another reactor I really like (Daily Doug) is a classical music professor and tried to listen to Metallica as a dare by his brother. His break downs of songs is epic and on point and does so from a music professor perspective of what keys/octave, time signature etc. But he commented that he went in prejudging that the music was all about hate and wanting to killing and go to war, etc. He found it's just the opposite in most cases - it's raging against the things are that being done to humanity and to ourselves by politics, corporate greed etc (just like true good rap music). One thing I was surprised not to hear you touch on was how much this music has a blues influence. Listening to Sabbath (especially older) has a unmistakable influence from music popularized in black culture from decades ago. A quick history lesson (and allegory to show how much things are similar even when they seem not). In America mid 1900s, you had two major forms of music - dixieland/bluegrass country, and underground "black" music; a blues and dixieland jazz blend. Some dared to cross those cultural lines at a time it was obviously frowned upon - Elvis being one of the most notorious for doing so - and adopted black American music influences into his style, and "rock and roll" became a thing - heavily influenced by both bluegrass and jazz/blues. Other bands became popular - for instance, Rolling Stones - played a now popularized rock and roll sound - also heavily influenced by sounds of music popularized in black American culture. Those drums, the bass riff (not rift by the way). If you listen to old Stones, and other rockers from the late 60s and into the 70s you can easily hear that influence. The primary difference was the rock-n-roll added a more aggressive vocalist, and added in more and more guitar structure (riffs, and solos, etc). Rock and Roll then evolved with Black Sabbath into "heavy metal" which was essentially taking the mood and overall profound nature of "blues" music, taking the rock and roll up beat and tempo, and making it powerful with their instruments, and lyrics took on a darker nature - much like blues music has a profound message of hardships and such, metal too started to have that demeanor as well. Many of the popular metal bands over the years sing about the atrocities of life, the system, government, oppression, horrors of war, etc. Many metal artists were also inspired by classical music as well - it is commonly said that the two most powerful music styles is classical music and metal music. And thus that influence is seen in metal's composition, flow changes, structure etc that you commented on a few times about how much you love it. That's an element of classical music that takes the listener on a ride as the emotions ebb and flow in the song. Fast forward to 80s when hip-hop was born - they borrowed all the previous things and used metal music inspired bass riffs, and drums to accompany their poetry, coming full circle that rock and roll was born out of a fusion of black culture, metal as an evolution of rock-n-roll, and hip-hop borrowed from metal to give back to the black culture of America; a blend of all that came before. As I've said before metal and hip-hop are VERY similar and connected. Mostly because of the lyrics in both are profound and have similar deeper meanings; the difference is of curse metal uses the instruments as a way to convey their lyrical message through use of music score - the same way classical music is used - and often observed in movies where the music makes the delivery of the actor's speech more powerful and felt more heavily.

I never saw Black Sabbath with RJD at the helm, but saw him 3 or 4 times while he was solo. If you love his voice, listen to some of his solo stuff or when he was leading Rainbow. One of the best vocalists I got to see live. He was up there with Bruce Dickenson of Iron Maiden who I was lucky enough to have seen live 4 or 5 times.

In Detroit we call Ronnie James Dio little man with the golden voice . I first got introduced him with a band called rainbow and grew up listening to Ozzy Osbourne singing for black sabbath. When Ronnie James Dio joined Sabbath for his short time I was skeptical but he showed nothing but class and respect for that band.

You hit the nail on the head !. Heaven and Hell does indeed live inside us all. This video is a year old. So, Ozzy was definitely great and Ozzy's voice was the face of Black Sabbath. There's only one Dio, but there was only one Ozzy. I have watched some of your other video's and would like to hear you have a listen to Black Sabbath song called "Air Dance" from the "Never Say Die" album. Ozzy is great both in concert and studio. I say that because on the Never Say Die album is when Ozzy had taken off for months and shows up literally in the 11th hour to lay down the vocals for that album. One of many reasons why Tony Iommi (lead guitarist) wanted Ozzy to depart after they toured that album. But Ozzy's vocals are pristine on that album none the less. I've never heard that song live, but it's not like Ozzy couldn't have sung it live, considering he was singing "Spiralarchitect" live quite well and that song requires great breathe control as does many Sabbath songs from Ozzy era Sabbath. 8 albums with Ozzy. Ozzy wrote their song "Black Sabbath." I hot to see Black Sabbath with Dio during the H&H tour. And no, they are not Satan worshippers in the least. They're actually Christians. They are no false light or any of that rubbish I've heard so-called Christians repeat over the decades.

Hey Polo, so glad to have a new disciple to the "metal" genre!! Welcome my bruddha! Got a few facts for ya; Dio was trained as an opera singer, and was in Rainbow with Richie Blackmore (Deep Purple) before Sabbath, and then was a successful solo artist after Sabbath (DIO) Tony Iommi, the guitarist, cut off all 4 fingertips on his right hand and actually had to fashion tips from wax and leather so he could play guitar.
