Its sad that one of Bruce Lee's most important messages was ignored in this scene. He was truly ahead of his time. After he died everyone wanted to be a copy of him which he himself was preaching against. "Don't concentrate on the finger..."

my interpretation of that line is to not be caught up by technique ..... i feel excluded from the fight everytime i begin focusing so much effort into my punches and kicks i begin to lose sight of my enemies intentions..... then one must be effortless pliable in his way of thinking not having a rigid mind thinking technique will save him being fully engrossed in it ....... being in the moment in the now so that the subconscious mind or the reptilian mind is able to react instantly..... this is the glory the beauty of attack and defense that is nothingness emptiness fueled by emotional content

That is respectful if people don't know about Bruce you guys do diligent research like get his book or a book about whose author knew him. Not like the haters they get their source from rumors. . ..But then again you have to be choosey which author to pick that wrote about Bruce, some of them were jealous and had a grudge against Bruce, so, accuracy, authenticity can be in question.

I think i found out what Bruce Lee was trying to "show". When he says "we need emotional content not anger try again with "me" ". From this i can assume he wants the kid to not pursue his goal but to adapt to his opponent to "feel the flow". Because if the kid uses his anger he messes with the rhythm, and cannot flow with his opponent. If he lets go of his "pursuit" or "ambition" he can find the right path and it will flow without anything hindering him. The emotional content means "feeling".

Close. He was trying to get the student to use his Yi-zhi. Yi is intent. Zhi is mind. There's also shen and xin. Spirit and heart/emotional mind. Those are not used during fighting. Fighting is the Yi mind. Intent and will. Now Lee used the word emotion. But then corrected the student not anger. It's a translation issue because emotion obviously isn't really what he meant. Intent is very close to emotion though so that was the English language translation. Intent is huge in Chinese and all Martial Arts. Your body and energy go where your intent goes. Your intent drives all movement. There's even an entire system called Xing Yi. Also spelled Hsing I or as Xingyiquan. Xing is form/shape. It is derived from the Wu Xing or 5 forms/shapes: metal, wood, fire, water and earth. Also the corresponding 5 organs: lungs, liver, heart, kidneys and spleen. Xingyiquan is form intent fist. Shape/form intent fist/boxing. (Nothing translates exactly word for word. It's the meaning of concepts.) Your intent drives your movements and power.

The wisdom, power and knowledge stored deep in the soul can only be reached when the mind doesn't think. There are no limitations in life according to master Lee. It's so universal. The "finger" is knowledge and the moon is wisdom. Any time you learn something, you don't learn it by thinking, you learn it by knowing. When the knowledge sticks itself in the periphery and simply guides you, you have wisdom

I don't think but I feel that Bruce Lee was bringing more of philosophy rather than martial arts. He was a good martial artist because his philosophy was so strong and powerful that while people were thinking to act he was actually feeling all of those acts. That means he knows how to feel rather than think. So when the opponent think of something else he just act it instantly. His philosophy is more like fighting an opponent by emotional content or formless body. Or it could be like an opponent fighting a wind/ shadow rather than fighting the actual body. Hope people out here feels what I meant to express.

I feel like a lot of people are looking too deep into what he's saying about the "finger pointing to the moon" because they get thrown off by the kicking scene. He's literally just telling us "don't get tunnel visioned on just one aspect of an entire situation." in BJJ for instance. you could be so caught up in trying to stop a sweep that you don't realize you just gave your opponent a limb. Bruce didn't tell him "show me a good kick" or "try to take my head off" he just said "kick me" but the student focused first the style, then the anger, instead of just kicking him. sometimes its good to just live in the moment and not focus on the things that got you there.

That's what makes this performance so masterfully done. It's more than just having a dual-meaning, it can mean something different to just about everybody and it's all valid from their persepective. It's especially valid when viewed as meta-commentary to the young actor. "We need emotional content," the audience must feel something (in order to make the film enjoyeable and memorable). If not the audience will be angry for having wasted their time and money.

I am a musician in addition to martial artists and was thinking about this after playing a show last night. I started out the evening playing terribly and was getting angry over that. Near the end of the night I was able to channel that into playing some of the best music I've played. The anger was part of it but I think it was more about reaching a point where I was in touch with my emotions and not fighting them but allowing them to empower me.

So in regard to anger, it's something Lee definitely used in training. Dan Inosanto has a story of hitting the heavy bag with Bruce holding it, and he's just kind of going through the motions and Bruce keeps saying, "No, Dan, hit the bag like you mean it. Like it's somebody that attacked your family," but he keeps mechanically throwing his punches until Bruce steps over to him and-WHAP!-slaps him right across the face, at which point he forgets it's Bruce Lee and comes at him and Bruce busts out laughing and goes, "Now THAT'S what I want!" Also, the Little Dragon was incredibly hot-headed-a fault he was quick to acknowledge-and often had road rage incidents sparked by the fact he was a notoriously shitty-ass driver, lol, and in another situation involving Mr. Inosanto, Lee cut somebody off or they cut him off, whatever, and next thing you know both drivers are pulled over on some L.A. city street, out of their vehicles, and ready to throw down in public, but check this out: As mad and fuming and cussing as he was, the second the fight starts, WHOOSH, all that anger goes away and Bruce is relaxed and dancing around with a smile on his face and even tells Dan to turn up a song on the car radio--I believe it was "Hawaii Five-O,” lol--as he’s methodically kicking the shit out of his opponent. Can anyone say: movie scene? Anyway, that was my long-winded way of saying anger IS part of emotional content-it’s just not ALL there is. And just like Bruce talked about mastering physical techniques to the point where they're beyond conscious thought and just flow naturally with the situation, the same is true for feelings and emotions. Which is one of the big reasons why Lee's fight scenes connect with people like no one else's: They're fucking FILLED with emotional content. They are physical AND emotional expressions of the moment. Just like life. So think about that the next time you're kicking someone's ass on the side of the road. Actually, don't think...feeeeeel.

Yeah it was a Yi-zhi lesson. Intent mind. With emotion was also a mistranslation. That's why he corrected the student saying not anger! The real word should have been intent. But it doesn't have the perceived impact in English as it has in Chinese dialects. So emotion and meaning were used. Should have just stuck with meaning.

Chinese has thousands of four-character proverbs which encapsulate the folk wisdom formulated and compiled over the millenia. (As does English, and perhaps every other language in the world). One such saying is "Biao Yue Zhi Zhi" (The Finger Pointing at the Moon), with the implication (don't look at the finger, etc.) being understood by everyone who heard it, in the same way that there is no need to explain the story behind or meaning of "Better the devil you know" or "Tortoise and the Hare" to anyone with even a rudimentary cultural education. So to attribute the saying "Finger pointing to the moon", let alone the wisdom behind it, to Bruce, would be a perfect example of looking at the finger, rather than at the moon (or the heavenly glory, if you want to be dramatic), which would be the nature-observing, philosophically rich culture which came up with the saying (and its meaning) untold centuries ago. I mean, if in 'The Sixth Sense', Bruce Willis said to Haley Joel Osment, "'A stitch in time'. It means prevention is better than cure.", would people think that he, Bruce (Willis), was a Socrates for the modern age? Probably not. It would be like if an American-born, athletic, Asian-American actor, went on an interview show and said, "Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do." and everybody fell over themselves thinking this guy is a philosophical genius, because he didn't preface his comment with "Well, you know, it is widely believed that Goethe said..."
@Chronicskillness2 жыл бұрын
It's an ancient Buddhist folklore saying right? Which, and I think you'll agree with me, really didn't make much sense to use when he used it. Because my understanding of the saying is "stay focused on your path". We'll Lee is the middle of giving the student a lesson. Which is clearly a Yi-zhi lesson. Which was mistranslated to "this time, but with emotion". Cause he corrected the student for showing actual emotion! Lol. Then says "this time, but with meaning" But it was really Yi or intent. Then comes the Finger pointing at the moon. Smacks the student in the head for focusing his intent on the finger. It's like they just threw the scene together. But that's what you get when you have an Chinese-American raised by a Catholic mother and Buddhist father who got kicked out of every rich prep high school in Hong Kong because he control his temper and kept getting in fights... Then studied some Taoism... Dropped Christianity, Buddhism and the religious aspects of Taoism and kept the philosophy. Then gets lit up by WJM... So he trashes Yip Man's Wing Chun and seeks out kicking experts of TKD, Karate and TSD. Constructs a new system that suspiciously looks like it's designed to cope with Northern Shaolin Longfist and Xing Yi.
@patgol22 жыл бұрын
"It is like when someone points his finger at the moon to show it to someone else. Guided by the finger, that person should see the moon. If he looks at the finger instead and mistakes it for the moon, he loses not only the moon but the finger also. Why? It is because he mistakes the pointing finger for the bright moon.” - from the Shurangama Mantra, compiled 168-179 CE
it means that the martial artist dont must concentrate in fight like if he were giving an exhibition, if he concentrate on that he never will be a good martial artist because he is just concentrating in doing something "perfectly" but that proper form to do something its just the right direction to go, but one must concentrate in feel not in doing it like he was teached
