1985 - Hard disks the size of today's 5.25-inch CD drives (1.6 inches high) are produced. 1987 - 3.5-inch hard drives of up to 500 MB are produced. 1997 - IBM releases a 16.8 GB hard drive for desktop computers. 1998 - 25 GB discs are released.
Hard disk or Hard disk, shortly HDD or in Turkish, hard disk drive are magnetic recording media used for data storage. Hard disks, which were used only in computer centers due to their large size and high prices, have entered our daily lives with their sizes that are small enough to fit in mobile phones and digital cameras.
Hard disks are mostly used in computers. Large amounts of information such as audio, video, software, databases are stored on hard disks to be used when needed. Today, although hard disks are extremely fast in data transfer, they are slower than RAMs because they are electromechanical. They are used as auxiliary and permanent memory in computers. When a computer software starts to run, the information necessary for the software to run is read from the hard disk and transferred to the RAM memory, which is much faster. If the portion needed is too large to fit in RAM, the computer uses a portion of the hard disk as RAM memory.
Computer hard drives are usually fixed inside computers, there are also portable ones that can be connected to computers from outside.
Data storage units used in their place before hard drives were so-called "magnetic strips" and "magnetic drums". First commercial example made in 1950 ERA 110 magnetic drum, 1 megabit (1 bit=1/8 byte)
2011 - Seagate manufactured and launched a 3000GB (3TB (Terabyte)) (3.5") hard drive.
2015 - Western Digital manufactures 10000 GB (10 TB (Terabyte)) (7200 RPM) hard drive.
