I started studying Chinese in China 3 years ago, paying attention to pronunciation and tones. When I "practiced" with native people they did not understand what I was saying, my way of speaking was very "formal". I tried to figure out how to know how to speak Chinese from daily life, but no one teaches you that, it is very frustrating 😔. When they talk to you, you don't understand anything because you expect to hear what they teach you in class. They don't teach you to understand "real life". With these examples now I understand many things that people try to tell me and I didn't know what they were referring to. I live in China and I want to learn how to understand Chinese from "real life". I like this video 👍 老师 more videos like this.

There's a cool example someone made explaining why it's so difficult to learn a new language at first. He played gibberish in English, and a normal sentence in Mandarin, but because I'm American, I could understand the gibberish because I've grown up with those sounds. In short, he said we should be constantly hearing it and speaking with people because we'll be able to pick up on the enunciation and phonetics even faster. Would you want me to link the video in my comment?

I have been hearing this for years and this is the first time that I can finally hear it. Thank you for taking the time to make this video it is very helpful. My Taiwanese friends do this a lot and I could never distinguish what they were saying. Although, as you were going through them, I was able to say them and know what it was. So maybe I have learned some things over the years and just didn't realize it.

When learning a new language, text book language vs the way people really speak is totally different. You've got to experience it first hand by immersing yourself in the culture. However, if that's not possible teachers like you Katrina can at least give us examples of what real conversations with native speakers might sound like. Great examples. I was watching this one Chinese drama and the actress pronounced xie xie more like xie xia. The final e sound was more like an a sound. Interesting.

I'm starting to realize that it's harder for me to understand spoken Mandarin by native speakers if they speak fast, have a regional accent, and I have no written reference in front of me. It's easier when you hear the word or phrase with the Pinyin written in front of you. Also, words written the same in Pinyin but with different tones confuse me. I'm going to have to sharpen my listening skills without seeing the written form in front of me. I am starting to recognize a few more characters. That's a positive. Writing them is not so good. I'll keep trying.

Laoshi, does Shuō hányǔ mean "to speak Korean" and Shuō zhōngwén mean "to speak Chinese"? Another native speaker said it was vice versa, so I'm a bit confused. "Hanyu" sounds like "Hangul" (the Korean writing system) which is why it's easy to remember the meaning for me, but they said it meant "Chinese". Please help, I want to get this right. 😭

hányu is Korean hànyu/ zhōngwén is Chinese. It's the tone difference. Korean has the second tone and Chinese has the fourth tone. Hope this helped!

So, if I say Xie Xie, they won't understand me? You spelled "Usually" incorrect @ 7:11, but I don't mind, because I know what you meant. Isn't that the same? I'm sure that the Chinese person will get what I'm saying. But I do like it that we can eliminate certain words :)
