In this video we take a look at an awesome 30ft Ford Class C RV built by Sunseeker! The owner of this RV came in to get rid of its air suspension and go to a 6" Lift Kit. Why? Well truth is air suspension isn't as good and it's not all of the hype. With custom springs you will get far more lift, articulation and a way better ride. Not to mention it's also great for towing too. These are just some of the few reasons but be sure to watch this video to check out the full build and tour with plenty more information. 1 Helper bags have been put on everything from semis to daily driven tow rigs, and lowboys for years and years 2 If you use a quality bag instead of cheap shit ones they don't expand at the bellows so you get alot more lift with less pressure. 3 Quality air bags can handle up to 200 psi easily such as conitech, slam specialty, or airlift. 4 If 112psi only gives you an inch than your brackets are completely setup wrong or you are running undersized bags. 5 An on board compressor gives you the versatility to only pump them when needed for a heavy load or towing. 6 A lift and heavier springs will make your motorhome ride like dog shit when it's unloaded. 7 Helper air springs aren't meant to be a lift at all. They are meant as suplemental support to maintain stock height when towing or carrying a heavy load. 8 Air bags are a cheap way when set up correctly to drastically reduce body roll that alot of larger rvs have. I'm not saying that a lift or heavier springs, sway bars, shocks or any of that aren't great ideas. I would love to have my 2020 chateau 31' a little higher when I'm out on my dune trips, but to say that someone shouldn't use them is not good advice. If properly setup and quality components are used, an airbag setup can give you a great bang for the buck improvement on your handling and tow capacity.

I believe everything you said. The guy in the video sounds like a used car salesman trying to talk mechanics LOL but everything you listed makes sense everything this guy spitting out of his mouth makes absolutely no sense! I added airbags to my class c and I couldn't be happier! No more body roll

100% correct! Anyone can see that the air bags that were on this thing are pathetic. It should have at least an 8” diameter double bellow on each side. It would then sit right at relatively low pressure and have a nice ride.

I agree one hundred percent airbags a ride for a smooth ride airbags absolutely make the ride more sturdy and more smooth my airbags lift back of my RV at least 4 to 5 in and stiffer springs are not the answer for anything unless you're constantly carrying a massive load

Air bags are best used as supplemental or being oversized. All the issues you outline come from running high pressure in an overloaded situation. I have Airbags on my truck camper, I wanted the help to remove a bit of squat, additionally being able to dial in my needs from them for different loading situations. I only run about 30 PSI to achieve this and the truck ride beautifully and is quite stable. My bags are rated for 100psi and tbh if I needed anymore than 50PSI to gain the height I need then yeah new springs and or adding a block would come before adding a heap of pressure.

So I have the Forester version of this RV. I have already done Hellwig bars and track bar. I did shocks and steering stabilizer as well. If I went with your kit I should have no issues losing the shocks and stabilizer for better units. Is there any reason to not keep the heavier sway bars and trackbar? I get that they are not needed with your kit because you actually go for the root of the problem, especially the reverse-arched springs. I don't mind a little stiffer ride if it still helps improve things around a corner. I am not criticizing here, just asking so I understand better. I admit I would never really go that far off-road except when going out west and maybe taking advantage of BLM land. I do like the look and the additional clearance it provides. Been lucky and haven't dragged but those jacks concern me and long low overhang out the back. One last thing. Couldyou possibly try and do a few videos showing the ride difference after the install. I know 's 'hard to do but maybe see if an owner would describe the ride before and after. That always helps to hear too.

Decent airbags are not like bricks, but softer than steel springs. Airbags can actually make the ride smoother over rough roads: perceived road bumps depend on how much of the up/down movement of the wheel is transmitted to the vehicle; with stiff leaf springs (extra stiff to carry the weight) much of the bump motion gets through. With part of the axle weight taken by an airbag, and the leaf spring less "compressed" and less stiff, the bump motion is transmitted by a softer spring and by the airbag, which obviously is less stiff than a steel spring and transmits less bump motion. (Imagine hitting something with a hammer, either steel to steel, or steel to rubber; which would be quieter?) Result: slightly smoother ride on rough roads. The air bag pressure should be tested for best result, I have heard 70psi. (Air suspension trucks and coaches use only air-bladders and no metal springs, with an much much smoother ride because the large air bag can move with the road bump without transferring much movement to the axle. Because this suspension so soft, it needs active pressure management to continuously compensate for weight changes and swaying in turns, which makes it expensive).

I have a 2019 Sunseeker 2860DS. I hate ride-rite too, I lose 10lbs every day and still, the ride feels like a square-wheeled bike. Can I simply replace the ride rite with sumo shocks? I love them since we installed on the front end. I'm hoping they will do the trick on the rear. Will I also need to buy new springs and where can I buy those sexy looking 8 leaf springs you were showing off in this video?

Just wanted to ask again if there is any negative to leaving the heavy duty leaf springs and trackbar on? Also, you did a great series of videos almost 2 years ago showing eh front end instal on a van. Could you guys film the install on a RV both front and rear and can we see underneath how the leaf springs are sitting when back on the ground? Mainly curious where the arch ends up. Slightly arched, flat (doubt it). As I said before, I literally have the same unit as this in a Forester and will be getting this done at some point but probably going to be a little while yet. Thanks

Just watched an older video about rv suspension. I'm at my wits end. I just bought a 2004 Class C rv on a ford E450. It is 20 years old now but has only 27k miles on it. There is a vibration that shakes the whole unit between 37-60 mph. And, it doesn't matter whether its in gear or neutral (coasting), going uphill or downhill. After 60 mph it smooths out. There are air bags inside the coils on the front and rear. I changed out decent tires for a set of $1,600 Michellins and still vibrates. I've paid more than I care to admit for "diagnostic opinions". So, I've been researching possible issues and have came across a few possible plausible reasons. Is it possible that the air bags have changed the drive angle and created an imbalance? If that be the problem, could I just let the air out of all 4 bags? (Not sure why previous owner didn't fix it unless its a new issue). Which makes me wonder if the ujoints have been damaged. Your youtube video just got me thinking. I've also read that welds come off drive shafts also. I'm not sure what to do but would appreciate your input. If I could I'd just cut those freakin bags out and just get better shocks put on. However, I'm not sure what would happen then. I live in Colorado so I cant make an appointment with you.

Great video - very informative. I live in Nova Scotia and recently bought a Four Winds 24F C class on E-450 chassis. Of course you say that nothing is better than your springs because you're selling two strings and new springs are great but if you're not carrying a massive load they're also very stiff and the ride quality goes down
@garymunson2493
@garymunson2493 2 ай бұрын
Actually, once you have springs that are the correct strength and can properly support the weight they are carrying, the air bags are a nice add-on that can adjust the ride to your liking. While not really necessary once the springs are the correct rate for the load they are carrying, the airbags allow you to adjust how soft or hard you would like the ride of the rear of the coach to be. I think that is what airbags should be considered for, NOT trying to make up for insufficient spring strength. Adding 3 leaves to the rear of our coach was the best upgrade we ever did. No more swaying, wallowing around on uneven pavement, or that hard crashing feeling/sound of the axle and chassis slamming against each other on bigger bumps with nothing to cushion the impact other than the air in the tires! While a 1200 mile round trip to San Diego plus the cost of Weldtec's upgrade was out of my pocketbook's reach, the rear spring upgrade at a local shop, while certainly not as complete as Weldtec's approach, still provided a huge improvement to our RV driving experience! If you cannot afford Weldtec's "full Monte" upgrade, I strongly suggest you at least have your rear springs brought up to the correct value. It will be the best upgrade you ever did making for a more comfortable and much safer ride!

I like your 2 cents and agree. I've built a lot of oilfield equipment and everything is engineered. Spec the suspension to support the coach, build on a bigger truck platform or build a lighter coach, don't add band-aids. Surprised that company hasn't had a lot of tragic failures. That is just criminal to put unsuspecting customers in danger with a system waiting for failure. AAARGH !!!!
