10 years ago I got smoked up a super steep climb by a guy on old 80s steel bianchi. He was wearing a cut off tank top, cycling cap and hair down to his shoulders. He was super nice, said hello and wished me a nice ride. I could barely get the breath to say thank you. That guy changed my life.

It’s easy to argue with the statement since Eddie didn’t take his own advice. Besides, we’re all amateurs here anyway. If buying a doo-dad for my biking hobby makes me happy, then who the hell are you to tell me how to spend the money I worked for? You paying my mortgage or contributing to my 401k? Also, and I know this is going to sound bananas insane: you can actually buy upgrades AND ride up grades. The $7000 skin suit is a red herring anyway. Look up “homologation special” to better understand the concept. No one on Chris’s group ride was wearing a skinsuit like that.

Chris, you hit the nail right on the head. I'm 62 and riding a 6 year old Pinarello with rim brakes and mechanical shifting. There is no substitute for miles and a plan. I do my intervals, hill repeats and tempo rides. I ride over 10,000K a year and still mix it up with the 20 and 30 year-olds. I can't see dropping 8 grand on a new bike because it's not going to make me that much faster. Save your money kids and train to race. Push yourselves beyond your limits. You won't regret it.

This is a not good generalised perspective. It’s like comparing buying a very expensive watch or a car, while their direct objectives could be achieved with, say, simpler versions. If people want and can afford a bike they ride on, that is up to them. Don’t judge them or laugh at them. That is totally acceptable. Maybe, just maybe, having and riding that bike is the only thing that motivates them riding bikes.

I agree wholeheartedly that most claims about “buy this to make you faster” are a bunch of horsesh*t! The only thing that makes you faster is riding hard - and smart. I am 66 years old and my “real fast” cycling days are behind me…….but I still get out there every other day on my 2002 Cannondale CAAD 7 and my 2004 Specialized Roubaix Pro and ride. I must part ways with Mr. Horner on intervals, though. I am not as gifted as he is/was so intervals DO help me stay fast & fit. They help me make hard, timed, wattage-specific efforts. Without a workout plan, I found myself spending too much time in Zone 3 and not pushing myself. Thanks for all of these cycling conversations. Your insights are always appreciated!

It's funny when Decathlon announced that they were entering the WorldTeams with their top model Van Rysel bikes. Immediately there were comments on very respected youtube cycling tech channels, that the frame looks like with last year trends and they don't think it would be particularly fast bike. And then a Continental team rider won a race with exact frame and even with mid range groupsets against worldtour teams. Again spot-on comment from You. ✊

My favorite quote from Top Gun: Maverick, "It's not the Plane. It's the Pilot." Anyways....I totally agree what you're saying and what that favorite quote is saying. It doesn't matter what one is doing, whether it's motorcycle, cycling, or even paintball! We see someone out there with the most expensive gear, and they're so amateur about sport/activity thinking the best money in the world will get them the best results. Instead, it gets them empty promises and an empty wallet. When I ride my Fuji, all I wear is an old, worn-out US Navy cycling jersey, and a pair of nut-hugging US Marine Corps issued green shorts. 40-50 miles with no padding whatsoever.

There was something recently, on CN or elsewhere, where an ex-team mate of Pogacar said it was the manufacturer who pressured him into using discs. GCN have shown there is minimal difference between rim brakes and discs (same with groupsets), whilst now, unless you get something from pre-2020, or go custom, you are on discs. The market dictates what we use and get, even if it's not always the best or even needed (i.e. socks, all cycling socks are now so high!)

Hey Chris, I love your insight on so many things cycling but wanted to give you, my opinion. I know I am straying from the theme but here it goes. My bars are 38cm and they are pretty nice and didn't cost too much. The narrower the bars the closer you get to approaching an aero bar setup. Although I agree with not spending money foolishly, I do think the right tires are a big help. I am currently riding 28mm Vittoria Corsa Pro with Latex tubes. Until you have rode with them - don't judge - they are outstanding especially on rough pavement. If you want to spend a little more money I do love my Ceramic Speed bottom bracket. Also, if you do a lot of climbing DI2 is pretty nice! As far as training, hill intervals or simply riding at tempo over rolling hills is a pretty good workout. To me if you are not doing significant elevation work you are missing a key component of your training. Being the right body weight is key too especially if your race is hilly. I think Pogacar has dropped about 6 pounds since last season, and I think he may be unbeatable at the Giro if he holds up and races smart.

Narrow bars are pretty cheap. I've got a shallow deda rhm 42cm handlebar for £12

Thanks Chris your points are appreciated, and I am happy that you have confirmed how I should continue to train for my rides. I am lucky to have two bikes an aluminum Trek 1000 and a Carbon Trek 5000. These bikes have been beasts and I have been riding them for about 20 years. The costs of riding now have escalated to the point that it would make me think twice before investing in purchasing a road bike and the complimentary tech needed to ride.

Hey Chris! Jon Rentschler from Ohio - you contacted me a few years back about KTM TPI problems. GREAT video!! Like we tell the kids, there's NO MAGIC in bicycle or motorcycle racing. Hard work and dedication gets you where you want to be. Interesting comment you made regarding long socks to keep your achilles warm in cold weather. I just recovered from a complete achilles rupture. 5 months from surgery to complete recovery and back to bicycling, offroad motorcycle riding and trials. If you have chronic achilles tendonitis, get it treated BEFORE it totally ruptures!!

my old cycle club was filled with so many guys with deep wallets and big bellies who would spend thousands of dollars each year to boast and brag about their latest tech that saved them 5g on bike weight - yet these same guys would refuse to ride an extra 1km each week to lose a pound or two - its unbelievable mentality but one that the bike industry relies on to stay in business because THOSE types of riders are always out there - the big bellies were always trying goad me into buying a top line Colnago C6 like they had when all I had was a poor man's entry-level aluminium Aquila Squadra - it was heavy and low tech and the cheapest bike in our peloton but it was all I could afford - I even wore women's PINK bike shoes because they happened to be on sale and were what I could afford - my reply whenever any of the big bellies asked me when I was going to upgrade was succinctly this - "I will BUY a Colnago bike when I have Colnago LEGS" ..... they NEVER harassed me again

just got a trek madone 5.2 for 500 euro. Put on mtb pedals so I can change between my alu mtb and my new new trek. They are both great bikes that make me happy.

Thanks Chris. It's so easy to get your head turned the wrong way when watching these other cycling programs ( mostly non or semi pros). LUCKILY for me , I've always been too poor to fall into that hole. It forced me to focus on the basics.

2013 BH Ultralight. Newer DA cable 11-sp with rim brakes. In almost mint condition. Will never sell it. Screw disc brakes on bicycles. Ridiculous IMHO.
