My dad was a forest ranger for my whole life. If probably planted over 1 million pines in my life, most on a tree planter. Planted 250K on one winter break in high school. Great video.

Nice and informative video as always. Seem to be commenting on nearly everything you post, but just want you to know that your videos are really inspiring. Its so nice to see you get some help from your wife and son, making this a family project. Id like to give a little shoutout to the ladies at our sides, helping us out in so many ways. If it wasnt for my wife I could never do what I do. Great job, stay safe y'all. - Finn

I think the only thing I would do differently, would be to add a shovel full or maybe two of compost made with chicken manure, just to amend your soil. It will add many nutrients to the soil and help hold the water longer!!!! Go along each spring and put a shovelful or two on each tree to give them some food for the growing season. You will find your tree's love you for it and will probably double in size!!!! The speed that they grow with compost added is amazing!!!! May God bless you and keep you and your family in good health through these trying times!!!!

So I lost my house in a forest fire and I was looking for a Eagle Scout project and my neighbor bought a mill smaller than yours but the same company and came up with the idea of cutting down some of my burned trees down and mill the logs into 3/4 inch planks so I could make birdhouse kits for one of my local 1st or 2nd grads student and to also give to my neighbors I have completed this and am very happy with the results and I even got to use the mill very cool machines and can be quite dangerous. We will also be milking out some benches for our house once it’s done being rebuilt and also be milking out a mantle for our fireplace out of some black oak😀

First thing, Happy Easter to you and your family! I have three suggestions on planting. When digging the holes, use a tarp or cloth landscaping material to put the dirt on. This will eliminate trying to push the dirt in the hole. Would it help to have some rain barrels down by the trees? Put the barrels on a framed, about 18”-24” add a specked to the barrel and hook a soaking hose. The last thing dealing with deer. Get some Irish Spring bars of soap and cut (shaving) with a pocket knife, putting some shavings by the base of the tree. This does work!

As a pesticide applicator herbicides can be a very helpful too. Put it down on a dry hot day with little wind as possible. I would highly recommend pants and also walk backwards and spray downwind.

Instead of Roundup try a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water with a couple ounces of Dawn dishwashing detergent as a wetting agent. I have found that it works just as well without the risk or cost. Costco usually has white vinegar for under $2 for 1.32 gal. Significantly less expensive too.
@jakebendel52384 жыл бұрын
Just a suggestion sir. if you would use a post hole auger you get loose dirt from a lot less effort . just a suggestion. happy Easter.

Looks like a whole lot of work. Living in the pacific northwest our ground appears to be a lot harder to plant in plus my place is up and down. Hard for my to get around in. The grass and weeds grow real good and it's hard to keep cut. I'm not sure if I can find those flats of cypress trees around here but I'd like to try. My idea isn't so much growing Christmas trees as just some nice fruit trees like cherry and apples. But having some help with the privacy and cutting down of the noise from the busy road by use would help. Terry

Interesting that you say Roundup doesn’t bother them and that supplemental watering isn’t needed yet you have only one successful planting?
@falllineridge4 жыл бұрын
As long as rain is in the forecast, you'll be fine. Might have to supplement if you hit a drought. Part of the purpose of the video was to show mistakes. One mistake was not watering them in last year and then we had the drought. As long as you get rain, you're good. Proper application of roundup doesn't hurt them a bit.

My family and I are considering buying some wooded acreage in North Carolina to build our homes on and also sell some of the trees for lumber. I like the mills I’ve seen on your videos, my question is how long does milled pine have to dry before it can be used for construction?
@falllineridge4 жыл бұрын
Tim McNeil For construction you need 12-14% moisture content or lower. If you want to use it for construction you might need to have it inspected first. Laws vary. Thanks for watching!
@timmcneil9064 жыл бұрын
Fall Line Ridge Thanks for the response. I was able to locate my moisture meter today. (I’m a former termite inspector and it was a tool of the trade.) The property we’re looking at, is mostly loblolly pine, about 112-114 acres. I sure hope you don’t mind me picking your brain, as most of the property will be forest for profit, about how long does it take for these pines to mature enough for harvesting? Also, do you know of any firms that rent those amazing portable sawmills?
