It's a hard decision for sure. I have 16" MBP M1 Max. It's great for around the house or maybe if you are going for an extended stay somewhere. If you are using it as a portable work device (I'm a sales rep, so multiple clients at multiple locations and a lot of time spent working in my truck or on a plane) I would go with the 14". The 16" is a wonderful laptop, but it is a bit of a beast and mostly sits on my desk with the occasional trip to another room. Rarely leaves the house. Update: I ended up trading in the 16" and getting a 14". For my use case it has been much better and a more enjoyable experience.

The choice of MacBook Pro ultimately depends on the specific demands of your work and your budget. If your profession involves intensive video or photo editing, particularly if you’re a digital content creator, the M3 Max chip could provide significant advantages. However, for lighter tasks in video and photo editing, the M3 Pro chip is more than sufficient. Since you mentioned that your projects involve a lot of color correction, having an additional display is also important. While the 27-inch 5K Retina Studio Display is an excellent choice, there are other options like the BenQ PD3225U that you might consider. Personally, I decided on the 16” MacBook Pro with the M3 Pro chip because I value the larger screen when working on the go, and I’ve found the improved cooling and speakers on the 16” model to be beneficial. I also use the CalDigit TS4 to connect my 16” MacBook Pro to a 38” monitor when I’m at my desk. The M3Pro chip, 36GB RAM, and 1 TB SSD run smooth like butter without fan noise. I hope this helps with your decision!

I couldn't justify any more computer for me - I'm audio production with some photoshop and the odd bit of video. Going for a M3 PRO/MAX or 16" just too expensive / overkill. Another issue with the 16 inch MB Pro is the edge of the front of the notebook will generally rub against the wrists as the distance from the keyboard and front edge for the 16 inch notebook is much larger than the distance for the 14 inch notebook even when typing in the correct position. However, if the notebook is in fact being used as an actual laptop rather than desktop, this is not an issue since the elbows are at or above the notebook surface.

I'd say cost would be another factor in deciding your screen size. I went for the 14", mainly for portability reasons. Went with the fully specced out M3 Pro with 36GB of RAM and the 4TB HD. I configured both the 16" and the 14" MacBook Pros, and there was a $300 (CAD) difference between the 16 and 14" models with the same exact specs. Great video, terrific job. Kudos. As a music producer, maybe you can do some performance tests with Logic Pro. The reason this would be valuable is bc GPU, efficiency cores, graphics performance, ray tracing, Mesh, dynamic caching, and all the other bells and whistles of M3 variants have no value at all in Logic and Ableton and other DAWs. That's all just eyewash for music production. In music, it really is all about the sheer number of performance cores, and to a lesser extent how fast they are (all M3 P-cores are the same, from M3 to Max and beyond). And currently, 6 is the highest M3 P-core count. But how would the 8-core option (4 P-cores), 11-core option (5 P-cores) and the 12-core (6 P-cores) compare? That would help music producers make the better choice, where all the other differences between 14" and 16" don't really impact performance all that much, other than thermals, and that the base 14 has but one fan. And as a music producer, I hope you find this interesting: It's not an empirical test, but I took your audio samples and did a Match EQ in Logic Pro. The 14 and 16 do sound about the same, but they are not the same. There are a few little peaks and valleys in the freq response that stand out. At certain frequencies, the 16 is 5-7 dB louder than the 14, seven instances: 80, 190, 800, 2.3K, 2.5K, 3.3K, and 10K. At other frequencies, the 14 is 5-7 dB louder than the 16, also seven instances: 240, 350, 500, 1.3K, 5K, 8K, and 16K. That was not quite what I expected. If anything, I expected maybe a smooth rolloff or increase at maybe high end or low end. But that revelation notwithstanding, bottom line, in your full mix, they do sound pretty identical other than what you pointed out, and that is likely bc the peaks in the 14 spectrum analysis happen at higher frequencies than those in the 16 analysis. And that is of course with actual music and a smoothing factor of 4. Increase that to 24, and it's a bit more revealing, in that the 16 is about 2 dB louder below 700 Hz, while the 14 is about 2 dB louder above 700. I'm not sure why you compared the 11-core to the 12-core. Obviously they will perform differently, and typical stress tests include those bells and whistles I mentioned, which have no bearing on music production other than mudying the waters. The 14" can be configured as 12, identically to the 16". In fact, those are the two I am considering. One surprising thing is that due to the way Sonoma is configured, in tests with otherwise-identical configuration where one has a 1TB SSD and the other has a 512, where both have two nand chips and therefore the same I/O bandwidth, the 1TB slightly outperforms the 512. I consider the term 'binned' to be a misnomer, which implies that unbinned is somehow superior to binned. In reality, all chips are binned. The 12-core is likely designed with more than 12 cores, bc that will increase the yield without increasing the cost. Assume it is actually designed with maybe 14 cores, and one may yield 14, another 13, another 12, another 11, and another 10. That's just the reality of yield. They would take the 14 and 13 and disable the extra cores, then 'bin' that as a 12. The 12, they'd disable the two that didn't cut the mustard. It has 2 cores that didn't make the grade, yet 12 cores did. The 11, they'd disable the extra core and bin that as an 11. The 10, they'd toss. That gives them a yield of 4 out of 5. Yield would be lower if they designed the chip with only 12 cores. And who knows? Maybe those that yield at 14 will appear as a 2024 option? The exact same structure, the exact same chip, but 'binned' as a 14. That would fit Apple's typical marketing strategy like a glove, without the cost of designing an entirely new M3 chip.

You could side cart the iPad to get more screen real estate and often times the iPad screen is just perfect. What would you do if you had an option to have the iPad and the 14 or 16 inch

Thanks for the video!! I love travelling, and, sometimes, I need to carry my laptop with me. I also carry it to work in cafés somedays. But I really like the larger screen and longer battery life of the 16". What would you advise me to do? Thank you.

I have the 16 inch pro M1Max! and I love it, yes it is a lil heavier & not as portable friendly like the 14 inch! but if you get the right carrying bag, you should have no problem, I use the MONO M80 Classic FlyBy Ultra Backpack which splits in half to carry just your laptop!! YOU WON'T REGRET IT

First time I rolled in, CJ, and I’m smiling happy that I did! What a wonderful, balanced and well paced presentation…whew, quite a bit of surely felt but unseen skill behind its making. Thank you, sir-you’ve certainly got the goods. Being a seniorish citizen and mostly a castle-bound worker now, I’m thinking 16s my number. As for the set-up, if I will be using this device to edit photos…Photoshop-Lightroom-Luminar, as well as do simple research in the Web and enjoy movies and videos, what would your recommendations be? I really, and I mean really am looking forward to your reply. So thanks for it! As for right now, we’ll, I’ve got to work my way through all your other vids, and if they are at this level of gooditude, I’m gonna be a busy boy for hours to come. Many thanks--I loved this one. Onward… Will

Hi CJ, thanks for this informative video. Could you help me decide between 16" M3 Pro/36GB/1TB in $2850 and 14" M3 Max/36GB/1TB in $3050. My main work is Programming, Medium Heavy Video editing, Graphic Design and some animation. I'm looking for a model that's future proof. I heard max consume more battery than Pro version?

You know what's crazy? HP used to have the laptop sound game on lockdown until apple bought "beats by dre." After they bought that brand, their laptop sound quality dramatically increased. Their phone speakers probably did too. MBP 16" and iphone pro maxes are loud enough that you don't really need a portable speaker unless it's party time. I was on android at that time, and and every android phone sounds like shit coming out of the speakers. Sure it's usable, but it sucks.

Why is the performance better of the 16" if it's the same chip, or were you just comparing base 14" m3 pro with base 16" m3 pro. And what did you mean by bend and unbend? The 12 core vs the 11? Thanks!

I've been watching a bunch of videos regarding the differences between the 16-inch and 14-inch Pro and Max since I have the opportunity to get a laptop (my first MacBook ever) but I still haven't made up my mind. I'm rarely traveling far from my home (mostly to school, cafes, or other nearby cities). I’d use this laptop for school and editing; PPT presentations, documents, writing essays, editing photos, watching videos, (sometimes playing minecraft or roblox)…etc. Could anyone help me decide what to get? I still have 2 weeks time before I get it. 😁

I really don’t mind the weight of the 16”…. For portability I understand those that go smaller. But then it would have to be a MBA. The 14” has always been a weird product IMO after they offered the air.
@patch1103 Жыл бұрын
True, though with the MBP you also get additional external display capability compared to the MBA.
@jmasked508211 ай бұрын
depends. the air is not as specced out and sn't ideal for people that need portable performance. ie video editing, game dev, serious software dev, etc. Also video/photography and graphics professionals prefer the screen quality and peripherals in the 14" vs Air.

I wish I would have gone with the 16 over the 14. I use to have the 16 and it was too big but the 14 has a scene comparable to my iPad Pro 12.9..... so I have a very powerful iPad now lol. but I do have it set up with 3 monitors so that's nice...
@paulh6933 Жыл бұрын
Good info!!!. Another consideration is many ppl have another monitor and keyboard/mouse. So for me weight is the only consideration.

Let me compare the sound! I have an M3 MacBook Air 13 with Boom2 software on! Guys next door warn me of the loudness when I play music with full sound lol Guys believe me there is nothing like an Apple device when it comes to sound quality! My advice would be buying a 16 inch basic M3 Max version besides a MacBook Air 13 basic for home and travel use! You can also save more with a cheap Samsung A25 etc device so believe me it will be more profitable! I have always preferred buying a Macbook or iPad instead of iPhone all my life! iPhone is just a toy when u compare it to these devices!

other than size and aesthetics would it be better to go for the 32gb RAM on a 14'?? or would the unbinned chip with the extra cores can outmatch the performance from the 32gb Ram on the 14'??

I have the m1 macbook air with 8gb ram and 256gb ssd. It lasted me for 3 years. Shall I go for the M3 max 40 core GPU 16" with 48gb ram and 1tb ssd OR the M2 Max 38 core GPU with 32gb RAM and 1TB SSD.

Your question shows that you truly do not know much of computers. Hence, why Macbook users buy premium laptops that they underutilize and only use for browsing the web. That is probably 99% of Apple consumers are using a Macbook for. Might as well just get a Chromebook.
