As a former scout idk how many moms and sister volunteers helped run things. I see this as a positive thing because thst means my daughters can actually learn survival skills and have a good scout experience rather than just sell cookies.

Girl scouts do that too. You just have to find a troop or, better yet, start a troop to do that. Girl Scouts do way more than just sell cookies. They do a lot of community service projects and earn their Bronze and Silver Award, which is doing community service projects. They can also do a Gold award project that is equal to the Eagle Scout award after they complete at least the silver award. They have to put in 80 hours on the project after they get it approved, and trust me, they nit pick the heck out of it before council approves their project. It has to be something that can be handed off to the community or organization to keep it going, and it has to be on the global level. I wish everyone would stop seeing Girl Scouts as just selling cookies. Unfortunately, society does not want to acknowledge anything the girl scouts actually do. It also goes from kindergarten to 12th grade, so if you see older girls selling cookies, please don't berate them as they are selling to fund not only their troop dues but also the projects they do. I got tired of people asking my daughter where's the girl scout and she had her vest on, umm sbe is right there. Sorry, sore subject. Yes, there are troops that don't do much, but my daughter was in an extremely active troop. If you want the Girl Scout experience with the stuff Boy Scouts do go find a troop like it in your area. If not in your area, step up and start your own troop and do that stuff. The leaders of the girl scout troops are moms of the girls in those troops. Not from council. End rant, and I hope you are more informed about girl scouts who are not and never have been a part of Boy Scouts.

Yes this is an issue with things like sports and locker rooms but in this case it isn’t as boys scouts mainly teaches life skills like cooking, fire starting, and camping while girls scouts is just random activities like movies and selling cookies. By changing the name you invite women to also learn the same life skills that men are taught in Boy Scouts. If anything this change should be supported as it’s one of the good examples of inclusivity.

The Scouts membership has been plummeting for decades. Add in the scandals and equal opportunity, and you get the Scouts. Most people don't know that the Boy Scouts & Girl Scouts are two different organizations. They do different activities, Scouts now have Troops made up of Boys and Girls. They are separate Troops who have the same opportunities. Not all girls want to sell cookies! IDKW so many people are going crazy over this. It's a kin to a school having a Boys & Girls tennis or swimming team. Two different teams doing the same thing. It's not a They/Them thing, The Scouts teach morals & ethics. I never got the opportunity to join but I somehow got my hands on the Basic Scout Manual 1982 edition. I spent my teenage winters in a deer blind reading and rereading, tying knots and looking for the 30 point buck. Subconsciously memorizing the advice on character and ethics. I struck through my Eagle patches and returned them. This is a true travesty since girls already had their own division of scouting and we (Boy Scouts) already had a co-ed program, and we need to send them a very loud message that they can’t ignore. Where I am, mental health isn’t mental health anymore, it’s mental health & addictions. As you can imagine- there’s way more money in the addictions portion of that. So they come first. I watched a lady get a Bed in our largest facility get kicked right back out to give her bed away to l… an addict. The only person in there for mental health was her. I went in to visit the place for my novel, and met all the people (very kind people) but sad that mental health is the least of a mental health place- concerns.

Yes but girl scouts isn't an equivalent group, that's not a fair argument. If there was actually an outdoor group for girls, it would be different. Girl scouts is about "making young girl entrepreneurs" by selling cookies aggressively. Boy scouts is about growing your life skills and respecting the authorities we have traditionally respected. This thing is not the same as some of this other stuff, they have accepted girls for years in BSA so they've changed the name to reflect that.

From what I remember from BSA when I was a scout in the late 80's to early 90's there was maby 1-2 trips a year and a very large drive to sell Trail's End Popcorn. The rest of the time it was weekly meetings where we learned random things mostly towards merit badges. I remember learning First Aid, CPR Citizenship, Respect and a how to tie few knots.

So what happened to modelling girls scout after boys scout if they felt it was lacking? How is it fair that girls get to keep their own movement unique to them but no unique experience for boys exclusively?. that doesn't sound like equality at all.

We didn't get a choice to accept them. They just showed up one day and we had to change nearly everything and stop some camps due to lack of female leaders or lack of accomodations. Speaking from experience

Back in my scouting days, we used to escape camp and head to the Girl Scout camp in the middle of the night because we knew those girls had cookies! Oh, yeah, baby! Thin mints by the dozen!

Hey @veritasweasel I never joined up with the scouts... I remember a visit at summer camp though & girl scout leaders came with supplies & taught us how to make "mud pies" with pudding, Oreos, and gummy worms... It was cute & fun 😊 But what all do they do in the girl scouts, besides funding with cookie sales? And what do they do in the boy scouts? Pretty sure their activities were geared towards tying knots and camping/wilderness survival etc

They were trained in hand-to-hand combat, beating back raccoons, squirrels, bears and yes, Boy Scouts too! Any of which could wind up stewing in a pot over a campfire. Mostly they would use their womanly wiles to attract us with Girl Scout cookies and milk, then trick us into letting them practice their knots by tying our hands behind our back. They’d torture us by leaving us lying their just out of reach of mud pies with extra gummies. Our only hope was for elite Boy Scout rescue squads before the Girl Scout leaders discovered us, and the girls moved to the next level of merit badges!

I use to be PROUD of being a Scout!! I was a Cub...then Boy Scout. Years later I became a Troup leader. Scouting really helped me become the man I am. So it broke my heart when a few years ago they said they were allowing openly gay leaders!? Are they insane!? I. called the National Office,...and after 50 F..king years I resigned all duties or associations with the "former" BSA....:^(. :^(
