The rare, original demo of the iconic song produced for the film 'The Breakfast Club' by musicians Keith Forsey and Steve Schiff in 1984. The director, John Hughes liked it so much that he included a version with vocals removed in the opening scenes of the film, just after the David Bowie quote shatters and the students arrive at school. This was later presented to the band 'Simple Minds' who eventually agreed to produce their version for the film. It ended up being perhaps the most successful track they made!

@@matthewpulley Hey Matt. Thanks for getting in touch! Like you, I'd been searching for this version of the song that appears in the the opening scenes of the film, without lyrics for many..... many years! I love this version, with the flourishes that the guitarist played. I could not find it anywhere. Then by chance, a month or so ago, while searching for it again, I found out that the guitarist who played on the original demo was Steve Schiff. I found a podcast produced by 'Simple Blasphemy', made 8 months ago, in which they interviewed him. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKexpaxmj9eJfas . At 26 min 30 sec, they talk to him about the history and the production of this track. They mentioned in the interview that a version of it could be found online. I took my chance and emailed them and asked about the whereabouts of the demo as it can't be found anywhere. I asked them if they could possibly contact him to ask if a version existed that I could get a hold of. Well, they really came through! They got in touch with him and he very kindly, put this up on his SoundCloud for me! When I heard the opening bars, I knew it was the version I'd been looking for, all these years! Three days later, it was removed, for whatever reasons? Thankfully, I'd copied the track. I've re-uploaded it here because I feel it doesn't deserve to go missing again. It's an important part of the history of the iconic track! Hopefully, I will not be asked to remove it anytime soon!

There is no way whatsoever that this song would have been that HUGE without Simple Minds and Jim Kerr's voice. Simple Minds had really just blossomed and come into their own - and went on to make many great records. But, this version - you're hearing it through the prism of knowing the massive hit, which gives it a recognition this demo never would have gotten. Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry probably couldn't have made it the hit it was either. All the elements came together at the right moment to make the magic that hit single was...an iconic song from a movie. You can't plan that stuff.

@@ericlindsey3069 I'm going to respectfully agree to disagree on whether I formed my opinion of this version based on the knowledge of knowing it became a great hit in the 80s. When I heard it back in the day, I honestly didn't know WHO did the song...?.. I DID know that the song, the drum-line and other details appealed to whatever makes me like a song or not. I liked it and when I found out who did it, I thought, "These guys are good!". Hearing it as this demo version (a rough, not fully produced version at that!) still hits whatever buttons I have that make me like a song. Again, Props to Forsey and Schiff! Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill are on ITV right now (8.9.23) talking about this demo, recalling it put their backs up when told about a song for a movie that "sounds like Simple Minds." Jim: "We'd been writing a lot of stuff and we had never done anyone else's song. The way it was presented to us was a bit weird. They said: 'It'll be great, there's this song for a movie and guess what? It sounds like Simple Minds,' and we took the hump. "We write our own stuff, so it was more that than anything else. To be fair if you go online and hear the original demo it's a good song, but it's a wee bit generic, y'know half a dozen bands could have done it, but Charlie and the guy's gave it (pumps clenched fists). Sounds as though some genes from Icehouse, DNA from Men without Hats, a smifge of Alphaville and the shadow of an Idol vibe has been chucked in an aural blender and produced a funky skeleton for The Minds to put some muscular flesh on courtesy of Mel Gaynor's incredible drums, Burchill's brilliant guitar and iced by the midas lyrical touch of Kerr with his Lalala refrain that captured millions in audiences live. hard to put yourself into the position of 1984, hearing this for the first time and having to estimate if it will do any good. Kerr's restrained reaction therefore is understandable, SM had much better own material up their sleeves (even All The Things tops Don't You easily and would've fitted Breakfast Club as well). I think his distance towards the track is sincere - he could've easily put the damn track on Once Upon A Time and the album would've sold two millions more at least. that being said, his vocal delivery really made the track and imho he definitely should've deserved a writing credit for whatever he added. lots of could've should've would've in this topic, in any way this story will haunt Simple Minds forever, good or bad

I agree, Simple Minds finished it off and improved it with the nuances and the end build up that made it the hit that it was, eg: 'laaaa la la la lahhhh'. Apparently, they didn't say thanks and didn't acknowledge the origins from what I've heard. 🤔 They did use this as a 'scratch track' though. This fact comes from one of the producers. The 'orchestral hits/stabs' from the keyboard, that: 'da da, da da da dahhhh', the basis of this hit, comes from Forsey, the composer. If you're interested, you can find the link to the interview with Steve Schiff in one of the other comments I've made on here, after which, I managed to obtain this track. It is in my reply to Carlos Hernandez. 👍
