Don't you hate it when your calculator's solar panel is just taped on

While 'editing' this video (turned out there was nothing to edit from the one clip I used) I found I had half an hour of footage of what i thought had been a quick attempted repair. Turned out I forgot to turn the camera off so most of it is the calculator just sitting on the table. I didn't even use any of that footage anyway, it's too boring.
I've found I have a backlog/reserve of short random videos that need to be edited, so I'll probably be going through them and uploading them to supplement my projects and record uploads, which I haven't been doing much of lately.

Yeah, at some point apparently the calculator chips for these 4 function calculators got so low power they'd run for many years off a single battery, making the solar panel an unnecessary expense. Only reasons I can think to keep the solar panel is customer expectations and they don't want to change the plastic molds to delete it.

It’s like fake vents on cars. Drives me nuts

Then there's fake drawers on furniture. The Victorians were fond of doing that on Davenports and tables, one side having real drawers, the other fake, to preserve symmetry. Can leave you guessing whether a drawer is stuck, locked or fake. Then there's drawers that look like two but are actually one, drawers that are actually doors, etc. People just love faking things.

@@toomanyinterestsi’ve always been more of a fan of over-engineering it within reason just for the sake of maintaining usability and functionality, simply because faking it like the calculator just feels lazy and almost insulting like you think the fact that it has a solar panel is going to sway me to your product when it turns out to he a sham. Literally a scam unless it isn’t mentioned in the advertising it’s insane

@@Pain74312 Yeah putting a fake solar panel on is quite disappointing and makes me think less of the product. If it was just an honest cheap calculator I'd have no issue, but here it is pretending it has a feature it doesn't. It's like the "hallmarks" on silver plate that turn out to be the letters EPNS or EPBM in shields, done purely to deceive people into thinking it's solid.

Probably an another model of this calculator that has a solar panel made by the same company exists. But they use the same casing in both models. It can make manufacturing cheaper and faster by using one casing making machine instead of two.

Yes, that is a more favourable theory. Still a bit disappointing they resorted to the fake solar panel rather than fitting a blanking plate.

That looks like a piece of plastic made to look like a solar panel from the outside.

It looks like that, but in reality, it's just a wireless hyper advanced chinese technology.

In fairness to the Chinese the "solar cell" is still working as well as ever. Talk about reliability!

Is that even a real solar panel? Lol!

Probably not, if it is real it's pretty useless anyway as there's no terminals to connect wires to.
