It's running the correct speed, this recording is by the Universal-International Studio Orchestra from the sound track of the film The Glenn Miller Story. They played it a bit slower than Glenn Miller's orchestra. I've heard both “65-Thousand” and “65- Oh-Oh-Oh” in all the recordings I've listened too, is there one with just “65- Oh-Oh-Oh”?

They transmit through the mains wiring, not through the air, so their range will depend on how many noise-producing appliances are plugged in nearby. The sockets they are plugged into will also have to be on the same phase, so they will usually not work between neighbouring houses.

That makes sense, I know the Metropolitan Railway did the same thing in London with their Metro-land, although they owned the land and developed it via an "independent" company. If that cinderblock wall and infill could be dug through this mystery would be solved, unfortunately I don't think the relevant authorities would give permission for such an undertaking.

Interesting, if that was the case than the NY Times article and some forum discussions would've predated the Brennan article. However the Wayback Archive has a capture of the article from Dec 2002 so the date is probably correct and it was only added to the list in 2012, seemingly around April Fools, maybe as a revival of the joke. I have just done a little more looking into NYCSubway(dot)org, being the forum mentioned in the NY Times article, and found a transcription of a letter by Mr. Krokowski outlining his claims. Part of this forum discussion is probably what is quoted in that article but I can't figure out how to properly navigate that site. I also found a post on the same site from the 2nd of August 2001 about 76th Street, predating Brennan's article. So the legend definitely didn't originate from his article. I will link both posts in another comment in case you're interested, hopefully KZbin doesn't block them.

I'm the one who used 76th as a joke on April Fools. But the joke was that the FBI stumbled upon it during a mafia grave excavation. There really have been mafia excavations between Euclid and 76th so I figured it would make a good joke.

I turned up the audio volume as much as I could on my computer without causing too much background noise. Next time I'll see if there's any other settings I can adjust, and try with a different microphone I've gotten.

That's cool that you performed with him! Unfortunately I don't currently have anything with suitable inputs that records audio in digital format, and the record player I used here has an issue with its amplifier that I need to sort out. I don't exactly have space either, but somehow I've so far managed to make some. Where there's a will there's a way, I guess. Joking aside, I ended up finding quite a nice spot in the lounge for this clock, although it may find its way to the hall now that I've solved the running problem. I do only have a few mantel clocks, because of how much space they take.

Yes, Victrolas are very unusual here as they weren't sold here. Other than this I've seen one Victrola console and a beat up portable. I've also seen an L door gramophone like the Victrola XVI from around 1910, but badged as HMV. I do wonder how that came about, Victor and HMV were affiliates but I didn't know they ever shared complete cabinet gramophones. Maybe it was some sort of trial? Anyway that went for way out of my budget. I would like to restore the finish if possible rather than totally refinishing it. By the time this machine was made I don't think Victor was using shellac anymore, although it may have been different in Canada. I remember reading some advice for restoring the finish on this model Victrola but I don't remember what it was, when I get round to it I'll find it again. You're welcome!

@toomanyinterests That's interesting. I understand HMV started using a cellulose spray finish in the later 1920s. I wasn't aware Victor had ever moved from shellac. My VV-IX is ftom 1916 and shows the typical crocodiling of old shellac, but then in 1916 HMV would have been using shellac anyway 🤔

@@mrrgstuff According to the Victor-Victrola website post 1925 orthophonic Victrolas used a spray lacquer finish, although in Canada it may have been different, some of the cabinets certainly are of different designs. This Victrola has much finer crazing than the typical crocodiling I've seen on shellac finishes.

I already did turn the mic volume up, but I will see what I can do in future to make it louder. I wanted to avoid having too much hiss and background noise. I guess an old reel to reel mic isn't exactly designed to work with a modern computer, I do have one or two other mics I'll test that may perform a bit better.

Thanks for the info, I'd read there had been grand plans to expand the subway for the future but that they didn't eventuate due to in part lack of funding and the rise of the motor car. One theory for why 76th Street wasn't built was that the high water table there made underground construction very difficult, so that fits with the area partially being marshes. Interesting how the subway, or lack of it, influenced the development of the area.

No. You're thinking of Pre-1920 Queens. Most of that area developed with the Fulton Ave El in the 20s so when the IND shameless stole the route from Fulton Ave El in the 1930s and 40s, it was already an establish area. This is kind of why the A train was rerouted to run on the former El itself past Euclid. The war, and post-war population boom prevented subway construction through said developed area. It also the same reason why the F train goes outside after Chruch Av. Had the IND has it way it would've been underground to Coney Island replacing the McDonald Ave El. (And yes there a active provision for that proposed extension that the G train uses to turn around.)

@@CaseysTrains Thanks for the clarification, I'm not too familiar with the history of New York. I read that the IND was a bit aggressive in its competition with the IRT and the BMT, rather than just reducing congestion like it was supposed to. NY has such a huge subway network with some fascinating history behind it, I find it a little overwhelming but also very interesting. Where I am I can count the number of underground stations on one hand, although some more are currently being built.

Thanks for the information about the 163, I'm sure I'll enjoy playing most of my electrically recorded records on it. I'll keep using the Rexonola for the acoustic ones as they sound nice on it, although the tracking is not as good as with HMVs and other good makes of the era. I have a few gramophones I plan to fix at some point including a table HMV with a No. 2 soundbox, and a Cheney, whose soundboxes have gutta percha diaphragms. One of those may become my go-to for acoustically recorded records, and I've always got my 101. Yes, with all that my Sonora unit once had inside it just to play records, I can see why an electrically amplified record player would be much more expensive at the time.

@@toomanyinterestsYou're welcome. As for tracking, I think some gramophone makers just didn't bother as far as tracking was concerned. Think its responsible for excessive groove wear that's found toward the centre on some of the smaller records like Mimosa, Little Marvel etc. Not come across gutta percha diaphragms. Would love to hear the results they deliver.

​@@tiga4180 With most of my cheaper gramophones the poor tracking is more on the outer edge, where the needle is at quite an angle to the groove, since most of the Swiss generic tonearms are perfectly straight. The Cheney is an all round unusual gramophone, between the stepped tonearm, constricted opening from arm to horn, right angle bend into the "acoustical throat", and the free standing carved spruce "resonator" (horn) in the shape of a violin (sort of). It's rather bizarre and quite possibly all patent avoidance. There was a good article on AntiquePhono but it's no longer up, it can however be found through the Internet Archive Wayback Machine. Unfortunately my Cheney is in very poor shape, although I did get both soundboxes in their original box, with the two jewel tipped styli for Edison and Pathe records. I broke one of the governor springs while working on the motor a while ago. I went to buy some new metal to make replacement springs, but was told that the springs are some strange alloy. The guy at the shop thought they were electrical contacts! They are also much narrower than the springs used on other brands' motors. I'm just going to try with normal spring steel of the same thickness, when I get round to it.

@@toomanyinterests Interesting. As for those governor springs, gut feeling is that if they're all the same, things should work ok, though speed calibration may be different from original.

Yes, if anything had been built there would be documentation. A station can't be built without a lot of paperwork, and with the interest in this urban legend someone would have found some of it by now if there was any. It's funny how one April Fool's joke has perpetuated such a stubborn rumor. Although I don't think I found any sources predating Brennan's article, I suspect the myth of 76th Street Station existing has been around longer than that article.

​@@eobardthawne324 I think that the signal lights, along with the Euclid Ave model board and the maps showing the station, where what fueled the rumor about 76th Street. I have not found anything documenting the rumor from before Brennan's April Fool's article, although the description of Steve Krokowski in the NY Times article about 76th Street suggests he had been invested in the legend for a while. Unless it was discussed in railway magazines that didn't come up in my internet searches, the rumor would all have been though word of mouth, so I have no evidence to prove that's how it occurred.

You clearly wasn't listening, watching or paying attention to the video.... He acknologed TWICE in the videothat it was April's Fools joke even admitting to almost falling for it. Next time wait until the video is finished to comment.

@@middlesbroughmike1027 They're just gonna be really random tapes for background listening, so I don't mind about the poor quality. It's mostly for when I don't feel like changing records and needles on the gramophone every three minutes. As for ornaments, I've already got more than enough vases, clocks and stuff. There's no room for 100 tapes! I do have a few nicer tapes around somewhere, which I will use for more important recordings. If I see some decent tapes at a good price I'll buy them.

Whoops, seems I forgot to mention that. Yes I learnt that the photo is edited. It's part of the April Fool's article, but I should've been clearer about that picture not being authentic. Thanks for the thorough debunking of that image! I even used photos of 7th Avenue-53rd Street station for drawing the imagined 76th Street, along with photos of Euclid Av (not that my drawings are anything to write home about).

Yeah, they're definitely nothing special. However for my purposes of recording random mixtapes and, once I fix it, saving Commodore 64 programs, these should be fine.

The person I bought these from had a few boxes, and I have seen more for sale online. I wonder if someone came across a large quantity of unsold stock of these tapes somewhat recently and has been selling them off?

Yeah, my relatives have stuff like that too, my aunt showed me a silver plated tea setting bought by my grandparents, describing it as an "heirloom". I didn't have the heart to tell her that it's of very low quality and worth nothing. I also see stuff at work that must've been "the good set" and remained unused in the cupboard. I've even seen a whole dining setting with the upholstery still in plastic, never used lest got damaged. Sadly often these items have little or no monetary value now, so they've been preserved for nothing.

That's annoying, I have noticed cassettes being more expensive than they were. I wonder, are people building up their stashes or hoping the value will increase so they can sell them later on?

@@toomanyinterests I literally mean people assemble collections: glass exhibition stands of sealed blank tapes of various brands! When shuffling through flea markets, I am often stunned by prices on "collector-grade" cassettes.

@@volo870 There's a collector for anything and everything! I'm not surprised, people collect things like gramophone needle tins, tobacco tins, matchboxes, and the like. Cassettes are also small, colourful and have many different designs, and being all the same size are easy to store and display. Not exactly my taste though, I'd much rather have some nice pottery or antique glass on display.

Thanks, I have a bad habit of keeping things for a never-eventuating future time because they're "too nice". I've been trying to get out of this habit, and realising that quite a bit of the stuff I'm saving will just be junk to others has helped somewhat. It's much better for these items to be used than to be wasted waiting for the "perfect" time that will never arise.

I bought mine for $40, that's what I see them around on Ebay, although this will vary by location. For transmitting TV I found my Universal RF Modulator actually works a bit better than the Videosender. If you want greater signal strength you can use an RF modulator or a VCR with an RF output and attach a few signal boosters. With that setup I've seen people broadcast throughout their whole house.

I haven't got any further yet, I went to buy some new spring material a while ago but the guy at the shop said they were made from some unusual alloy. I think I'll just buy standard spring steel of the same thickness. I found a video where someone made a simple jig for drilling governor springs so I'll try that. I may also make new weights from brass rod as the old ones are riveted on and will probably be a pain to remove and refit.

@toomanyinterests Yes, I'd certainly try standard spring steel. I believe it can be bought in short lengths of various thicknesses for use as the pendulum pivot on clocks. I've read some people have had success with this. Good luck and I hope you get it working again. 😀👍

Is the Dew (Moist) light on? I'm having a similar problem with my PV-3000 and it seems to be a problem with the dew sensor or dew sense circuit

Sorry, I haven't got back to this project so I don't know what the issue is. I'm quite busy at the moment but I'll try to get back to it soon. I think with my machine that with the mechanism jammed it automatically shuts off, believing there's no tape in it. Other than that I'm not sure, I'm no expert with VCRs so Dominic will probably be able to help you more.

Those signal lights may have been put there in preparation for the future construction of 76th Street, so they don't necessarily prove the existence of the station.

You'll be better informed than me, someone on the other side of the world. Do you have any sources, or any definitive proof? If it was built, the lack of any solid evidence is rather strange.

Yeah, no expense was spared on this clock! Thanks for mentioning that, got me to have another look at the clock. I knew some clocks can be adjusted so that even if the case isn't level, the mechanism will still run. I didn't realise that these old stone clocks have that feature. Three screws hidden by the glass's bezel hold the mechanism in place, and the mechanism can be rotated. Maybe it was my imagination but I did think the tick was a bit odd sounding. Now I've adjusted it a little so it's sounding better and since the escapement's visible, I got it so that the pallets block the teeth around the same distance on each side. We'll see if this adjustment results in any improvement. It's funny, at work currently there's a very similar looking clock. First time I saw it I was confused, I wondered how my clock had got there. Then I noticed it doesn't have pillars on the sides, only the front. The onyx has a little more interesting veins than mine, but one of the jewels from the pallet fork is missing so it would need some work. Would be amusing to confuse people by having two very similar looking clocks, but I feel no one would actually notice.

I know that it is meant to be plugged in without the antenna, I wanted to see if the signal strength was strong enough to transmit over a very short distance. The signal is so weak it won't cause any trouble, the VideoSender would be a far greater concern and that was a legal commercial product. And the FCC isn't where I am. Tuning the TV to channel 3 won't help with this VCR, it only outputs on UHF.

Thanks! This was rather fiddly, so I'm looking to get a tank that can handle 16mm properly. I do have more film to develop though. If I don't come across a suitable tank soon I'll be doing this again, as this turned out surprisingly well.

I don't have any of the 625A batteries currently, while I do have the one I used, so I found a way to use it. I know the camera needs two batteries, one of the original batteries still had charge. I will be buying some of the correct batteries though, as the other battery is now flat and this trick is a bit fiddly. In the long term buying the 625A batteries is easier, I just wanted a quick fix with what I have.
