Oliver 2000 Are you an American white man? My question comes from experience and I honestly think only a white American man could/would take away what you got from this video. The video was/is self explanatory, if you don't get it, that doesn't make it BS. It just means you haven't lived a life where you would experience anything like this or even know or befriend ppl that have.
@BobSmith-pm3wx6 жыл бұрын
The music video was mostly race baiting. I won't give it any more credit than that. You can interpret it differently if you want, though. For example, notice that Donald is the one murdering his own people with both the ak and the glock in the video. The shootings in the video could be symbolic of the fact that his own desire to be a famous musician led him to abandon his innocent black brothers and sisters, and through making garbage music videos like this, support the popular (and wrong) race narrative plaguing the media today in a kind of Thanos-like sacrifice. But of course, the key thing here is Thanos knew what he was sacrificing. I honestly think Donald is just too ignorant to be aware that he's parroting a bullshit worldview. I hope I'm wrong.

Hardly. At that point he's holding an invisible umbrella above his answer. He's saying what you take away from it is why he wrote it. It's just a soft stance. Agreed now its like an open ended question where there is no wrong answer. The video could just be a video, or it can be something deeper and yet those are both right answers to the question behind the video. Essentially the question is over. The new question that arise is what is the context that Donald was talking about, and is it his context or the people who designed the video, is it there context. I tried hopefully this fills in a bit a gray area or it just made things worse, if so sorry :/

Huge respect for Donald Glover for not explaining his music video. There wouldn't be such a massive conversation surrounding it if he just revealed everything about his work, and the subject of this particular video needs to be addressed. He managed to spread awareness and really gives his audience the opportunity to educate themselves about the issues referenced in his video. And for those who see his response merely as a publicity stunt to gain more fame or money, just remember that in this day and age, there are significant risks with putting something online that is considered controversial, especially about a sensitive topic like race that could really negatively impact someone's public image. What doesn't stop someone from using Glover's words against him if he were to actually reveal his interpretation of the video? He made a very smart choice.

The purpose of art is people thinking for themselves. So when an artist explains what the art is about, it means the viewer is no longer thinking for themselves. It’s up for interpretation and it’s designed to be thought provoking. This Is America doesn’t force opinions down your throat. It’s real art that’s mainstream. It’s created a huge conversation and that’s its only true purpose. Phenomenal song and video... on a less serious note - who else kept shitting themselves every time the Millennium Falcon came swooping through in the background?

Also is it me or did the song really look like Detroit.
@archerpool6 жыл бұрын
JAKE If you don’t what that means, then you simply cannot tell me I’m wrong. Art wasn’t made to entertain, some art is, like films, but most art isn’t. It’s meant to be thought provoking. I’m pretty sure Michelangelo wasn’t trying to entertain people when he painted The Creation Of Adam. I’m pretty sure when 12 Years A Slave was released in cinemas it’s purpose wasn’t to entertain. And I’m pretty sure This Is America’s sole purpose is to entertain. Art is an expression from the artist.

Oliver 2000 Social media draws our attention to mass shootings as much as it draws us away from them. By the time we've finished reading about it, there are at least 10 other things on the internet that everyone moves on to talking about. Social media and the internet stops the general public from spending too much time focusing on any one issue to do anything about it.

I don't get why anyone needs or wants Glover to explain his music/video. When you read a classic novel or look at important paintings do you try to find out what the artist's meanings are...or would you rather look at what they made and think for yourself? I think Glover's response is not only fair but admirable.
@maryangelica53196 жыл бұрын
Actually, I do try to get at what the artist or author is trying to say, not simply how it makes me think. Art is a form of communication between the artist and the one experiencing the art. As such, I want to know what the artist is communicating to me. There might be additional insights later on, but if he's not intending to communicate anything, then I don't really have to pay attention to it, or can make up my own crap about it. The act of experiencing non-communicative art is simply me reading my own experiences into stuff, but that's just lame. I already know my own experiences.

There’s so many interpretations and underlying meanings that a single answer wouldn’t do it justice I love his answer it’s kind of like him saying “if you’re still asking then you’re still blind” y’know like some things are better left unsaid because it’s evident they speak for themselves Edit: okay 2 things some of you are taking my comment as trying to speak FOR Gambino which makes absolutely no sense at all I’m speaking for me and me only I comment because I don’t mind hearing opposing views and obviously views that agree let me be clear once again Gambino said “No” I, me, and solely myself said what I said in my commentary above as a self interpreted reaction to him saying No those are my thoughts my views not what he’s aiming for not some underlying meaning that he’s put out there literally what I’m projecting as his reasonings for saying no. Simply put: all me. Number 2: I get that you all want to open conversations and have dialogue that’s great!! But uh I’m not sure where or how the whole Kanye and Kevin Hart conversation started but that part wasn’t me lol I wasn’t aiming for that at all not sure how it got there. P.S. I’ve gotten the comment “it’s not that deep” probably like 2 or 3 times already listen we’re different people I’m a thinker, our minds process information differently it may not be that deep and to you you’re right but hey that’s the beauty of opinions right? You have yours and I have mine 😄

@molomono97956 жыл бұрын
I don't think the underlying meaning is even the point. What i like about the video is that everyone who analyzes it throws a subjective twist on the supposed "message" behind the video. But what is displayed is a compilation of media, anyone can superimpose THEIR story over the video. I think that's the point itself, people when confronted with lots of shocking or emotional imagery will superimpose their viewes, it makes the viewers explain their beliefs rather than use Glovers and saying whether they agree with it or not. Which also coincides with the fact that glover doesn't want to explain the video. I really doubt it's as "black lives matter" as people make it out to be, i think it's much more principle.

I’m glad he didn’t explain, no matter what his reason was. Music is a form of art. An artist creates something to put a message out there, his art speaks for itself, it’s the tool he uses to send a message, to express himself in a way. And what’s great about it, is that every person interprets it differently, there is no wrong explanation, it’s all in how you see it. When the artist explains, it kind of ruins that. For example, the song “jealous” by labyrinth, the guy from AGT sang it for his best friend who died, another person could sing it for something completely different, like an ex who is with someone new. We should all enjoy art the way we interpret it.

As a cynic I wonder if, contractually, he was perhaps obligated not to drop any controversial bon mots until profit from the new movie is secured. Big studios stand to lose a lot of money if they're ensnared in these political battles, as we learned with Weinstein, Gibson, etc. But I really love that he declined to discuss it. Not that we shouldn't have these conversations, but the symbolism in that video was a big part of the magic. Giving concrete meaning to the symbols would reduce that magic to a formula.

As someone living in 2021 Im glad he didnt explain it. He shouldn't have explained because if you didnt already understand what the song meant you were the problem. I truly beleive that that song was meant for only certain people to understand. He said "I dont wanna give it any context. Its not really my place" He wanted people to get whatever message they wanted from that song and only a select few truly got it. Im coming back to this because it is the first time I had ever gotten anything from the song because when it came out I was too young to understand. I know this is years later but I just wanna thank him for maing this song because it is so powerful.

I really love his abrupt, direct answer. Like no he's not going to spoonfeed us what the symbolism in his art means. And he doesn't beat around the bush or use niceties to say that, he just says "no" lol Also you have to respect his boldness, in the timing of releasing this video. I bet the greedy juggernaut that Disney has become put hard pressure on him to not doing anything that's not "PC" before the release of the movie and that did not stop him at all. Bravo

I appreciate the sentiment in your comment but if you're referring to this is America being "Not PC" the only not pc part of it is the gunfire. It's might be very loud, but it's entirely within the realm of political normalcy.

I didn't necessarily mean that the video isn't "PC" and I probably shouldn't have used that word, I just meant that it is definitely a very bold video that could cause significant controversy. It seems clear to me that Disney would not want anything of the sort in the days leading up to the release of their movie to possibly jeopardize the financial return on the film. I apologize for using the wrong term.

Falling for the actual distractions. Acting like this man is such a genius the people who actually assassinate folks couldn't possibly understand why he'd be running from a bunch of white people. You know the puppet masters let this happened and encourage it right? Don't fall for this divisive propaganda. Educate and empower yourself brother. Sorry for insinuating you're ignorant I'm just so frustrated with all the lies. Time to stand up and unite all. This isn't about white man holding black man down. This should be about coming together under truth, not false narratives. One Love

Oliver 2000 I see your point however he wasn't here in this particular interview to talk about his music. He's here to talk about a movie coming out. I've seen the lyrical break down. At the end out the day people will take things as they want. Set the dancing aside and you have something raw. Something people don't like to talk about and that's the cold hearted truth. Fucked up things are happening in this country and people pull Thier phones out the media rushes over with cameras etc etc etc. But he's on this interview with a co-star to promote a movie not his music

Jacob Foster nah, man. it’s also the wrong place. this is hosted by the creators of Star Wars. Glover is their because he has to be for the movie. Childish Gambino on the other hand did not come to be interviewed. If he wanted to be interviewed about his music, he would’ve went to Breakfast Club, or Hot 97. It is disrespect. There’s level to this. Interviewer should know his place.
@manythemyles4 жыл бұрын
This actually pisses me of that he would even ask that. I’m so glad he didn’t answer. Yes it is art but that specific piece of art needs no interpretation. It’s very plain, people have actually been murdered in the streets, churches have been turned into mass murder scenes. It’s not Inception, nothing about it is fiction, it’s not complicated THIS IS AMERICA.

@suckitnerdSS4 жыл бұрын
@@midgard9057 Well, I also think that it was unnecessary. There was better questions to be asked in my opinion.
@midgard90574 жыл бұрын
@@suckitnerdSS You have your own opinion. But in an interview, especially towards celebrities, the interviewer is asking the top most searched/asked questions. Gambino isn't being forced to answer or is being asked a difficult and sensitive question. It's his art anyways, he can view it however he wants, he's not entitled to y'all (not specifying you). Also, what better question could he have asked? This question was the most desired to be answered, and it's not like he only asked one question to Gambini and ended the interview.

Latin Ace This is America. Everything has to be spoon fed and people can’t pay attention and read between the lines. In the music video, chaos is happening in the back but Donald is in his own world. What I think the commenter is implying is that the interviewer is in his own world, paying little to no attention to what was happening in the video to the point where the video has to be explained for him and he doesn’t even have his own interpretation.
@latinace19816 жыл бұрын

Latin Ace I’m not talking about what the video means, I’m talking about what the commenter is implying about the video. Of course I don’t know what it means, nobody does because, as evident by this very video, it’s left to interpretation. There are no rights or wrongs.
