There are secret service detail in the vicinity of the former president, they also have swat officers fully kitted out in and around the secured venue, plus secret service detail not in the immediate vicinity of the president. It’s a campaign rally, and trump himself really does make securing him sort of a nightmare, because he allows for attendees to be seated behind him directly, he shows up at sold out ufc events on screen surrounded by people, etc…and so yes obviously an attempt even is a breach of security measures but this shooter was perched on a rooftop outside of the actual security perimeter and rally, and inside 30 seconds of him firing off the first shots, between the chaos of secret service trying to act as literal human shields, a panicked crowd screaming and trying to leave the venue, they zeroed in on the shooter, and smoked him. I mean not even a full minute after all this happened secret service already gave the go ahead to move trump to the armored vehicle and they did so audibly, because again, they had already smoked the guy. Again, any attempt like this whether unsuccessful or not sucks, it’s tragic and it’s something that they are gonna have to really look at and revise but this notion he was just thrown to wolves or something or left half assed protected is just not true. If you think for a minute trump would be okay with dozens of fully kitted armed state troopers and secret service crowding him and getting in the way of his campaign rally your naive.
