On Daylight Saving Time: Regardless of time changes, the natural shift in daylight means I’ll go to work and come home in the dark during winter, and in the light during summer. Instead of changing the clocks, we should simply accept the seasonal variations in daylight. The thing I believe is that we should just stick to a time and companies, government, etc. just adjust the "arrival time" to the time that works for them, rather than adjusting the "clock time" to work for the company, government, etc. Moving the clock time reminds me of when people set their clocks ahead 10 minutes to avoid being late. That never worked for me because I just know I set the clock ahead.

Jon's a bit flippant (and honestly, a bit reactionary) about prison abolition, which is not the end of all imprisonment. Rather, it's about abolishing our current system of imprisonment which is focused on punishment and grew out of slavery (and is, in fact, the last place in our country where slavery is still legal,) replacing it instead with programs centered on removing individuals from society to rehabilitate and educate them into people who can be safely returned to society. Some people may never be safe to return to society, and they would stay in the system for the rest of their lives. It is a cheaper and more humane way to deal with crime, and if you are a progressive who dismisses it out of hand then maybe you should check your ideology for blind spots.

I live in Texas. I hate Daylight Savings time because it means the brutal sun is still beating down on us at 8 to 8:30 pm when you might be trying to grill dinner. On the other hand, my mother lived in NW Wisconsin. Without daylight savings time, birds would start waking people up at 4:30 am rather than 5:30 am. It should be a north south thing. And the change should come in the middle of the workday. Those of us in the south should remain on standard time. Or don't change the times. Just change the work & school hours.

Y'all don't understand what GITMO is. It was a U.S. Naval base established on Cuba when it was essentially a U.S. Protectorate after the Spanish-American War. When we released Cuba to the residents, we maintained the base as an outpost to maintain an eye on the Caribbean, South America, and the Windward Islands, including Puerto Rico. It was crucial to the prevention of Soviet incursion in the Caribbean (remember the Cuban Missile Crisis when the Soviets tried move nuke missiles into range of the United States?). There is still a base there that supervises "shakedown" cruises of new-construction and overhauled U.S. Naval ships. We cannot give up that capability.
