Wow, commenting to boost the visibility of this channel because this is honestly one of the most insightful things I have heard about Trump and the era we live in. Especially with the rise of labor movements, it does seem we are experiencing echoes of that historical era. Hopefully we can get through it with less violence than last time, I don't think very many of even the most hard-right people want to see pinkertons an federal troops machine-gunning activists. (although I do admit that there are definitely some people who would gleefully cheer that on, I don't think their absolute numbers are as high as what it appears from online posting).

If Trump likes McKinley so much why isn’t he making any plans to go hang out with anarchists in Buffalo 🧐

I think you've nailed it -- what Trump needs to feel rich or like a winner is for there to be poor losers. His Great America is one in which the Ultra Wealthy are freed from the fetters of constraint imposed on them by ideas of human dignity

*man who extensively studies the 19th century.* "hm, I'm picking up a lot of 19th century vibes from this event." You're correct of course. This is just how studying history goes, and I'm glad you're here.

If (like me) you don’t study economics, your historical understanding goes: - mercantilism: pretty simple, makes intuitive sense - everything since: incredibly complicated, only understood by people on TV/in the WSJ or FT It’s an information problem that doesn’t seem practically solvable by providing more information (because it’s complex!). So either you trust the complexity or you don’t, and currently we don’t. (Maybe that’s because of a different information problem.)

Those rely extensively on international trade, both for the export of their fossil fuels and investment of the gains thereof, and for the import of things like food and tech. I believe in Qatar there are more immigrants than Qatari. That sounds extremely un-Trump.

I've always gotten the sense that Trump selects a la carte facts to fit a narrative from those he talks to. It's all showmanship. He's always wielded influence, but becoming president has massively increased the pool of people willing to provide fodder for his self-serving kaleidoscope world view. I actually believe this is what made him dangerous during covid; his usual approach is hard to fight against because in the realms of politics/economics, theories are not easily disprovable on short time scales, whereas with biology, it's pretty easy to debunk bullshit (excepting epidemiology of course, that takes time and large numbers, and even then, it's easier to willfully misinterpret).

It's funny that he idealizes the US of the 19th century so much considering it's also the century the US ratified the 13th and 14th amendments -- the two eternal banes in the hearts of American conservatives

America became the worlds largest economy by the 1870-1880s and it didnt open up trade until after ww2. The dirty open secreat is the insular partly isolationist usa that crushed the natives and was doing neo-imperialism in the latin nations is what made the usa the superpower that was able to be the deciding factor in 2 world wars and basically dictate the global order for the past 75 years. There is certianly a logic as it has a proven track record but its not 1895 so i think its fair to say the conditions have changed. This is why i dont think he is going to invade other nations like canada or mexico because because there isnt really a business case and that's not really how imperialism is whether your china or the united states the model of marching in and planting a flag is antiquated. Also its important to note that Biden upheld and expanded trumps tariffs and trade war so i believe that just represents a desire on both sides to rebalance trade because if u let china make everything that eventually hollows out the nation and creates security threats. Biden was using trade rebalancing as a tool in his attempt to stear the country in a more green neo-keynesian direction this was derailed by multiple crisis hitting the nation. this made the electorate unhappy and effectively poisoned the well. Thus trump walks in and thus a return to nationalistic fossil capitalism.
