This is a wonderful film, Dietrich is very beautiful. Marshall and Douglas are tremendous actors giving excellent performances. The first 3/4 of the film is filled with innuendos mostly accomplished thru the actors eyes, Marlene is superb at this. The last 1/4 the innuendos are delivered more through speech. Has any actress dressed more beautifully in film than Dietrich? I can't think of one. Someone in the comments said it was an escapist film with no thought of WWII. The war about to erupt. It did so in 1939 with the Nazi invasion.of Poland. But Marshall plays a harried diplomat. But no one knew where war would break out in 1937, but Yugoslavia, a potential hot spot, is mentioned twice in the film. In 1937 American audiences needed some diversion. At any rate 1936 was the worse year of the great depression in the U.S. Audiences would have enjoyed the rich settings and the touches of humor and an hour and a half of romantic diversion. The same as I've just done in our troubled time.

Hedy Lamar. She comes to mind, having been considered the most beautiful woman in the world, at one point in time. She was Austrian, extremely intelligent, & like Marlene, spoke several languages. They both exuded class & refinement & were superb actresses. Both were idolized by millions, & neither found happiness in their personal live.

What a marvellously elegant, charming film written and directed with dry witty precision that sparkles under the restrained atmosphere of high society drawing rooms and manners. Thank you Marlene, Melvyn and Herbert for making me smile.

What a divinity and what style! That was Marlene.....but she worked very hard and she had a will of iron. Family was absolutely first. She supported all of her family. Everything was the very best quality. She designed her own clothes and did her own makeup. What a woman! As to men, ah, well.

Mr Borchers, i think one still can make a great small movie on " x " and KZbin. I recently see many great visual and acting/personality talent on these two platforms and i try to connect creator a to b...and i have a decent crowdfunding wallet , ready to support them in making a new movie... we'll see 🙂. I screened the films presented on your channel, and was very touched by the movie " Angel " , it is a powerful film... greetings, Tom, Brussels.

Herbert Marshall is married to Marlene Dietrich, but is so wrapped up in his career as a successful diplomat that he neglects how fortunate he is to be married to Marlene Dietrich. She stumbles into an affair with Melvyn Douglas. Needless to say, complications ensue. This is one of those 1937 movies that would have come off as infinitely more exciting, vital and contemporary had it been made in 1932 and that darn old Hays Code (instituted in 1934) hadn't gotten in the way. Despite the stars, this is stodgy rather than sexy, and the talking-heads presentation allows director Ernst Lubitsch little opportunity to be stylish. Plus, given its background and timing, its depiction of European events is startlingly naive; the world may have been sitting on a powder keg, but you'd never know it here! Most notable aspect of this movie is its utter meh-ness; if you wanted to argue that not everything that Ms Dietrich or Mr Lubitsch made was a gem, Exhibit A is sitting right here! 4/10.

Folks went to the cinema for enjoyable escapism regardless of the era. Presently today here in England we are sitting on a powder keg, but you wouldn't know it, life continues as normal. I adore Russian women, they are not my enemies. The deep state is.

Dull acting they're just doing a job of reading their lines. No great expression of emotions. The servants exchanges are the only interesting parts and seems like maybe some scenes with the servants were cut.. a different film focusing on just the servants observations of the goings on would've been interesting... especially if the servants were...HOWARD, FINE AND HOWARD !!!!or Even Mr Laurel and Mr Hardy.
