THANKS WHIP.!! Another GREAT POST, as usual.! Any, and All DIESEL engine oil filters are going to have some buildup in the can.! That's just the nature of the beast. That is SOOT.! For a DIESEL engine that can was SUPER CLEAN.! I'VE Cut thousands of them open off of Class 8 Trucks. Oil samples were also sent to the lab for analysis. FLEET size was over 680+ Trucks. All equipped with Hour Meters also. Local run Trucks were serviced by hours, and over the road Trucks were by mileage. NAPA/WIX HD filters, and SHELL ROTELLA OIL. SHELL fluids in exclusively. Never had any issues with excessive wear or engine failure.! @mutantryeff, I have a 1992 Dodge W250 4x4 extracab, longbed Cummins,I bought back in 1998, from the original owner. He had the truck made with, and spec'd with one ton axles, big brakes, and all one ton running gear.! CUSTOM ORDERED, and built that way from the factory. You NEED TO switch over to 15w40 for that engine.!! That straight 40 oil is too heavy for cold starts.!! You may be o.k. running it in Summer months, but that's kinda iffy.!! Don't listen to the choir singing about running a 5w40, or even 5w30 motor oil in your Truck.!! YOUR ENGINE has too much bearing tolerance for those thinner oils, and will eat itself alive on the inside.!!! Those oils are for new tighter tolerances in newer model engines.!! PERIOD.!! There isn't an Oil Company out there that would recommend any of these products for your engine. Call them and ask. Even some of the newer formulations of the different 15w40 oils they produce would be out of spec for your engine.! CHEVRON is a great oil just be careful which flavor you use in your Truck.! Call there Tech Line for the Correct Delo, and you will see what I'm trying to say. Call all the Oil companies Tech Lines, and they will tell you, and warn you about Not using them.!! It will run on the thinner oil, but for how long.?? Just trying to help save you money, and grief in the future.! ENJOY YOUR RETIREMENT.!! Best Wishes.!! @amichalek17 Adam, how does a 6.7 Ford Power stroke oil filter anti-drain back valve possibly help on a completely vertically mounted filter.?? Motor oil doesn't run up hill. These filters are full at engine shut down.!! You also say the filter media is FINER vs Stock Cummins filter media. If it were a FINER media it would be more restrictive to oil flow. It would have to be less restrictive if your getting a faster oil pressure response on start up.!! Think about it.🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔😉

Donaldson website shows: Frank Donaldson, in 1915 a tractor salesman, after visiting with a customer whose tractor kept breaking down in a dusty field in Utah, came up with an air cleaner to protect the engine from clogging. Thanks for the Tuesday Education. It's a quality filter and I have installed many of those filters over the years.

That looks like a nice filter. I use the oil filters for the 6.7 Ford Powerstroke on my 1992 Cummins. They are identical other than the Ford has a anti-drain back valve and finer filter media vs the stock Cummins filter. I've noticed it builds oil pressure faster on start up.

The Cummins 5.9 has two types of bypass filters built into the engine. Interesting sludge issue. Nice to know about the sludge issue. That is likely from a mix of short trips where the engine doesn't get super hot during the winter. When it gets to freezing temps and I forget to use the block heater, it can take 10+ miles to attain operating temps - all the time freezing in the cab. I'll need to use a flushing oil concentrate with the next oil change, and I'll go back to two changes per year even with the low miles on the oil. Good to see the inside of the filter.

I would just use 5w40 synth and maybe stick a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator(say 50% to start with) in winter and watch the gauge.. Our Duramaxes run cold also....about 150. With cardboard, still 160-170 with heater fan on and thats with 75% of radiator covered. New T stats made no difference.

Maybe the sludge at the bottom of that can is more of a trap to kind of trap it there and hold it and when you get rid of the filter, then you get rid of the sludge

It seems to me that the filter media is wavy maybe because the oil is struggling to get through after 1 year. No bypass valve, that might concern me. Otherwise everything else is great. Great job Pete as usual.
@faxmen09
@faxmen09 Жыл бұрын
The "wavy media" other than appearance, functionally affects nothing. Seeing as it's a long filter, some wave with use, normal. The reason there is no bypass in the filter is because none is needed or specified. Topic engine must have a block bypass system to handle it. Donaldson wouldn't leave off such an important part if specified.

It would be interesting if you could use a digital scale to determine the force required to open the bypass valves on the filters you compare. If you then measure the area of the bypass valve that the oil would apply pressure to, you could calculate the bypass pressure setting by dividing the force by the area.

@@WhipCityWrencher All you need is a scale and a small deep well socket to press it with. Subtract the weights. My drill press has a gauge. I could use an upside down drill bit.
@faxmen09
@faxmen09 Жыл бұрын
@@WhipCityWrencher That's because it's not as simple (as suggested) as applying some nebulous scale to a bypass and thinking that will provide an accurate result. It won't. Pressure=force/area. The force used has to calculated over the of the calculated bypass surface area. As an example, many people think because they can't push the Purolator flat spring bypass type with their finger, it's not accurate. One bitog one member actually applied weights a Puro bypass, then calculated the circular area of that bypass and divided the force by that area. He came up with results equivalent to the Puro bypass spec. So, unless you take into account, Force and Area, the result will NOT be accurate. In other words, science must be used.
@WhipCityWrencher
@WhipCityWrencher Жыл бұрын
@@faxmen09 Your right, that's what I was kinda thinking but I still dont know how to figure that out, and as far as I'm concerned if I can push it open it's good enough. I doubt there's anything wrong with the bypass valves anyway unless one is obviously broken. The Purolator ones do push in hard but it's also a bigger area so the force would be spread out.Thanks👍
