Merci pour les vidéos. A propos de la traduction: En anglais, on dit: Think of another solution. On emploi la préposition "of" au lieu de "to" dans ce cas. Donc, penser à une autre solution = to think of another solution.
@scottthompson569311 жыл бұрын
Great channel!!!! Some of these English sentences or English translations are sorta weird. We (English) wouldn't say "stayed more time". We would just say, "stayed longer". Or "therefore to think to another solution" is very strange. We would say, "Therefore think OF another solution". English is just as frustrating as French; even to an English speaker like myself.
@Frenchspanishonline11 жыл бұрын
thank you, as this expression 'to think to another solution' may be found in some books like books.google.com.ni/books?id=6sN7sI6X4RIC&pg=PA13&lpg=PA13&dq=%22to+think+to+another+solution%22&source=bl&ots=5khWeTOhQF&sig=3gwu8n9HxWGxQOaAeHcwhPXAZ6U&hl=en&sa=X&ei=Dj-EUoDBH8fxkQfItYD4Ag&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q=%22to%20think%20to%20another%20solution%22&f=false, but you are right

FrenchSpanishOnline You're Absolutely correct. But it might be worth considering that Bruno Colombo is an italian, who doesn't speak english natively. It's also worth noting that the amazon reviews for The Death's Name did not benefit him well with regard to his english sentence structuring and grammar. www.amazon.com/The-Deaths-Name-Bruno-Colombo/dp/1434906302/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1384444103&sr=8-1&keywords=deaths+name+bruno+colombo Although the sentence might make perfect sense in spanish and french, It just confuses the hell out of us (english).

Hi, M. Pascal. In the interest of creating a more complete record, I wanted to to reply to your comment to agree with Mr. Thompson's assessments of the video and the Colombo text you linked above. I'd like to start by saying your English is actually quite commendable; native English speakers don't usually comment on minor grammatical errors unless the English in question is very close to the quality of a native speaker. I agree with Mr. Thompson that "to think to another solution" is improper in this context and should be replaced with "to think of another solution." In addition, I would recommend moving the word "therefore," although this suggestion is far more advanced and is the kind of error even native speakers are prone to make. I'd suggest placing it either before "we" i.e. "Therefore, we will have to think . . ." or immediately after "We" i.e. "We, therefore, will have to think . . . ." Either of these will keep the verb structure "we have to think" as a single, undivided unit, which makes for much easier comprehension. I also agree with Mr. Thompson's critique of the Colombo book you linked in a previous post. After reading five or so pages of his writing, it is fairly evident that Colombo's command of the English language leaves something to be desired. Aside from the cues that only a decade or so of speaking English would make evident, there is one major indicator on the page that you linked that a non-native English speaker easily could use as a sort of "shibboleth" to discern good writing from poor writing: the lack of contractions. A lack of contractions is expected in formal, scientific writing (think academic journals), but is very odd in any sort of fiction writing. Consider for instance the second paragraph of that page. "He had hated that damned woman since the first moment that he had seen her. She had known about what had been done and she would surely have made him sink as his ship if she had had the possibility of it, but he knew he didn't have any other alternatives." There are several major grammar errors in this paragraph, but the lack of contractions is the most obvious aberration. If I were to edit the same paragraph--and I'm by no means a great writer--it would read something like this: "He'd hated that damned woman since the first moment he'd seen her. She'd known what had been done, and she surely would have sunk him just like his ship if she'd been able. But, he knew he didn't have any other alternative." I only mention any of this because your videos have helped me immensely, and I'm eager to return the favor. Given the high level of your English skills, I imagine it is difficult for you to find useful critique outside of paid tutoring. I hope none of this comes across as condescending. All in all, your command of language is far beyond mine, and I hope you continue to create videos. I'm learning French now, but I plan on learning Spanish once my French is sufficient for travel. Please keep making these videos, and thank you very much for all you do. You have a great channel, mon ami.

Thank you so much for all these videos that you think of which are so helpful .The little difference in just the meaning and how a word or expression is actually used will certainly help us improve our understanding and grasp of french .Your English is very good but yes I do notice some errors here and there but it doesn’t get in the way of our understanding the content so it really doesn’t matter.I am not a native English speaker but I too did smile at your use of “more time .” An English speaker would use more time only in a request “ I need some more time “ or “ a reply to that eg I can’t give you any more time ....I can’t wait any longer .” Hope that helps .😃
