Hi Graeme, can you explain the numbers on your Dad's pacenotes? 26, 24, 20, 18, 16, 7 etc

Hi Sam, the pacenotes are certainly unique. They started off following Pentti Arikkala's system with 12 as the biggest, but the numbers kept getting bigger for some reason! Essentially, they are based on severity of the corner so 26 is the most severe and you need to slow down the most, followed by 24 which would be more like a square corner. Anything called 18 is very fast and 16 or below is more or less flat out but with different levels of severity or bravery required! However, unlike some other notes, each individual corner doesn't necessarily stand alone but rather corresponds to the next one coming up. So for example, a corner on a standalone basis might be an 18 but if the next corner coming up after it is very tight (a 26) he will call it a 24 into a 26 as he knows he needs to be slowing for what is coming up. They also grade crests, jumps, dips etc. on the same basis so Jump 26 is a big one! Hope that helps and you have enjoyed the footage. Graeme

That's a brilliant explanation, Graeme. Thank you for sharing. It adds a new layer of enjoyment to the experience of watching the videos. I've watched those onboards for years and had no idea of their system, only that Andrew pedalled hard, and James pulled him back...at times! I still use Pentti's note system in its original form, 1-9 direction first. It's a clever system that encompasses speed notes, slowing notes & and angles of severe corners. We also categorise all crests and jumps for my little fwd. It was an ingenious tweak that Andrew and James made to employ the "teen" numbers as a speed note and the "twenties" a slowing note. Also, little or no distances because they were covering ground too fast! Thank you again for sharing the champion's winning formula.

That was magic to watch. Even more special to be on the ditch watching it that weekend. Best Donegal ever in my opinion. Near the start there James warns of the Mcrae corner. I presume that was a reference to a Jimmy Mcrae moment from years back. ? Just interested to know
