The American Academy of Pediatrics updated their breastfeeding and breastmilk feeding recommendations June of 2022. They changed the language of their previous statement (2012) to now they "support" breastfeeding until TWO years. There have been mixed responses to this update. Some have been elated with this new change, including myself, and others have been conflicted. As I am understanding, they are conflicted because they are now questioning their original goal of breastfeeding for ONE year. Many have questions about what this means for their journey or what expectations of new parents are. Here, I explain why the AAP has made this change and what this means for breastfeeding and pumping families.

I LOVE the way that you explained this ❤️❤️❤️! So clear and precise, and with compassion also. Thank you 😊. Also, I’m a doula but I’d love to become a lactation consultant as well. I have no idea where to start. Do you have any advice for me?

This is sooo much better than when I was having my babies in the 80s. They were actually telling young mothers that "similac is better for your baby". And pressure from family members "you don't want to look like a cow" I breastfed for one month for one baby, tried and failed with two.

I so wish the support wasn’t so poor for you. It’s truly not fair.

@@DoneNaturally absolutely! I'll always regret not having the truth that breast milk was waaay better and that it provided probiotics and the beginnings of the immune system. Makes me sick. On a positive note, La Leche league was genuinely helpful in teaching me to what to do to help sustain breastfeeding for that one precious month. I think if I could have made a friend there it might have helped pushback against the pressure.

Please I made so many mistakes in the first few months . I barely pump 2 ounces a day . I want to give my baby milk aslong as possible . She is 6 months now and I really been doing even thing to increase my supply but I am definalty doing something wrong. 4 days postpartum I pumped 4 ounces. How can I increase my supply without going insane spending all this money on none sense

What is the science that longer breastfeeding equals more protection against what? Do not just make a comment that there is evidence without citing it.

The science is everywhere and can be easily found. The American Academy of Pediatrics and World Health Organization both have made these statements and don’t make them without evidence. I am merely sharing what they have said. Feel feee to look up the evidence. It’s reading available.
