The Pony Tail Twirl is arguably the best ability in the game.

Definitely and it's mainly the fact that it can be useful anywhere instead of being restrcited to pads or barrels or other cases. Like you won't be using Chunky's Primate Punch as a regular attack because it has such a slow startup.

Mad Jack, the most memorable boss in the game. Also fun fact: The backing track has the Mad Jack laughs in it; that's not the character himself making the laughing noises throughout the fight

Mad Jack won't jump back to the last platform he was on for the first three hits. It isn't until he is hit for the third time that he gets serious by speeding up and jumping to whatever platform you were on, even if he was just on it.

Scykoh didn't mention this, but there's actually a super cheap way to beat the boss. Since there is no penalty for falling, you can simply wait on the elevator platform that brings you back up and he will be unable to touch you until he starts throwing fireballs, at which point you make a B-line for the switch.

@@leviathan1173 Wow, he actually does! At first first I didnt believe you and instead of looking it up, I plugged my N64 to test it myself. I also did some consistency tests to see when he actually attacks. It's the number of jumps he does, and it's not random. It is 9, 11, 12, 13 and 15 respectively for all 5 phases. Tested it across all three files.

@@leviathan1173 Here's some bugs/oddities I've found while testing: whilst standing on the elevator platform, if he uses his laser attack for the first time (the one with the special scene), it automatically removes 1/4 of a melon. No knockback, just deletes it. Tiny is the only kong that can trigger a glitch where you can freely move down below if you simply use her Z+B off the edge. (which I then learned that all four elevator platform are loaded at all time, neat) Finally you can reset his cycle without falling down by just doing the run+B, than jumping as late as possible. Works with all kongs. (easiest with Diddy)

During the last time I played (some years ago) that race with the car... I lost, but the game gave me the banana anyway. I was very confused. And then it booted me out to regular Tiny on the now fully lit race course, so I got to have a good look around the place. Which was neat. But I still don't know how the game glitched out that much, though. lol I vaguely remember there being presents outside the track, but with how fast the race goes and with the lights out you usually don't see them (or at least I never saw them) in the actual race. But once I walked far enough away from the race track I got sent back to Frantic Factory proper. So, yeah, that was super weird, man.

First of all, may I just say your channel has meant a lot to me recently, and to find out you're playing one of my favorite platformers ever was just so cathartic. Second... I think now's the perfect time to talk about this part of my favorite boss battle of all time. My theory. Mad Jack isn't just a Kong-killer. He was initially created for this, yes (nothing this powerful is built as anything but a weapon), but there was a problem: he was TOO POWERFUL, and TOO DANGEROUS. His abilities are similar to what the Blast-O-Matic is capable of, but on a smaller scale (mini B-o-M?). Plus, if he's capable of killing Kongs, why would the Kremlings reject him for being *weak*? He was created to kill Kongs. He began to kill EVERYONE. That's why he was put in the reject chute and forgotten. It's the whole reason why the boss battle takes place in a part of the factory closed off from anyone else, while most of the other boss fights take place in areas I'd assume to be decently accessible to others. The Kremlings are protecting the world from their own creation. In fact, I'd wager that he stole the K.Lumsy key, and the Kremlings just let it happen because *who would dare try to get it back*? His murderous urges have gone unsatisfied, until Tiny Kong happens to show up on his turf. He now has a toy of his own to play with, except in this case it's more like FOOD. Just a little food for thought.

What’s interesting is if you are good at glitching this game you can play almost every boss as any kong. What you can do is moon kick out of bounds or clip through the stairs in the troff and scoff area. :)

About Mad Jack, when I was a kid, I couldn't figure out how to beat this guy for the longest time. Because I didn't know I needed the Pony Tail Twirl, so I went into this boss without it every time, and I was frustrated that I could never make it across the platforms. Eventually I did go to Cranky Kong and realized I needed a move for Tiny to get across the platform. I was so happy I figured this out on my own.

I used to jump off the side on purpose in the boss fight. After you fall off you get lifted up on a platform separate of where the jack in the box jumps. Then you can just wait till he stops jumping and go hit the right color switch.

great series on this game, its clear you have a lot of love for this game. I got it in christmas 1999 also, has a special place in my heart- the music, sound effects, goofy cartoony stuff, and the creative graphics and gameplay was exactly the good quality you would expect from Rare. The gross hilarious Troff & Scoff burp when you feed them the bananas is just so charming......This game along with Perfect Dark and Conker especially was a fitting end to the N64 era as we hit year 2000

The first time I played this level I completely forgot to get the twirl, so when I fought the boss y had to use crouch b into midair jump into kick to move from one square to the other. Then I went to school and told a friend I had such a hard time beating the boss but eventually managed and he asked me why I never got the twirl. I felt so dumb but relieved at the same time!

I remember the first time I fought Mad Jack as I kid I had gotten the 200 bananas on DK, Diddy, Lanky, and Chunky. I didn't pull out Tiny until the boss fight and could not understand why I couldn't make the jumps. I was so frustrated and confused that after a ton of attempts I just erased my save file and started over. second time around I actually played as Tiny in the Factory before hand and had Pony Tail Twirl. Then I got stuck on him because he's much tougher than anything else in the game up to that point and I was 4 or 5. Maybe 6.

I think this is as far as I’ve ever got when I played this game as a kid. (I was 8 when it came out) I had no idea you could go back to previous levels as other kongs to get more golden bananas. I thought, once you beat the boss then the levels done. I’d be interested to see how I’d play through now as an adult

Seeing Tiny's ponytail twirl just makes me want you to let's-play the DKC trilogy. I always thought of this as DKC4 until Returns came out, because it has the charm of the DKC games and then after it I don't even know what they were doing anymore with DK. Also gotta love any boss with a cool evil laugh like Mad Jack's!

I don't know how I haven't noticed this until now, but Crash Bandicoot 2 has a very similar boss battle where you have to jump between small platforms while a boss chases you. Coincidentally that boss is called Tiny.
