Growing up, I didn’t think it got much better than this. As it turns out, this is one of the most virtuosic jazz bands of all time.

Great stuff. Burton is transcendental; catch him live at any price, folks. Weckl's groove and mullet are in full splendor -- I wonder if that massive plumage helps him swing so hard.

The guy on the xylophone is AWESOME!!! I used to hate them because my band teacher in high school was/is a douche. But this guy is just too good and I have to respect it and love it as well. And I just LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE how smoothly the horns back up the flutist during his solo from 3:41-3:45. It's just so lovely man. 5 stars!!!!!

Right you are. Bells can be found in orchestras also. (hence: orchestra bells) They are usually 2 octaves with no resonators and played with small steel ball mallets are ones made of hard plastic on a horizontal table. Vibes are completely different.

He didn't say bells he said 'vibes' which is what the instrument is, a vibraphone. The bars are aluminum instead of wood and the tubes have a sort of vibration mechanism that creates vibrato and sustain when needed.

The piccolo solo is in F, then they transpose into the original key of Ab for the vibes, then back to F for the head out, so i guess the piccolo needed it to be transposed.
@JanHough4 жыл бұрын
A better word for transposed in this case is 'modulated'.

It's arguing like this that makes people turn away from jazz music -- as jazz musicians, I think we all have a duty to educate and encourage people, offering only constructive criticism, even to artists who aren't around. Otherwise, newcomers will always be afraid of being harshly judged and/or slandered. Jazz shouldn't be about a pissing contest of namedropping and street cred, it should be about enjoyment and love of music... but most of all, cooperation! That's what makes it great!
