She also went very religious and was kind of ashamed of the music she had done in the disco era. Many of her gay audience started resenting her and boycotted her music. Partly the gays made her a star by supporting her and felt betrayed. Sorry for the hard real facts, but I was there when it all happened. So it was all great and all fir Donna, but it all sort of stop for her and probably why she stopped making music for a period. Or that the record companies didn’t think she could break her disco image and go into r & b.

Donna Summer won the first Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for Hot Stuff. She started her musical journey in the Psychedelic Rock Band Crow as the front woman, before she won the part of Shelia in the Munich Production of Hair (the musical) and moved to Europe. She was also the first Queen of Pop Music , she was dominating the Billboard Charts at the time, and rewriting the record books. She became the first female artist to repeat having the # 1 single and #1 album with Hot Stuff and the album Bad Girls (she would repeat it 3 times in 8 months), she would also be the first female artist to have 2 songs in the top 3 (twice in 4 months), and 2 #1 singles in the top 5, and the top 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.
@thebeardedseeker5633
@thebeardedseeker5633 2 жыл бұрын
that she won the first Grammy award for best female rock vocal cannot be understated. this was during a time when music was extremely segregated. Back then, African-American singers were not encouraged to have a hard rock sound in their music. Donna was having none of that. She did rock, pop, r&b, and country. "Hot Stuff" basically paved the way for Michael Jackson's "Beat It". After that, many African-American artists felt emboldened to experiment beyond r&b and incorporate hard rock into their repertoire without fear of being abandoned by their base or losing radio airplay.

Donna was known as "The Queen of Disco!" "I Feel Love," (Donna Summer/Giorgio Moroeder) was one of the key moments in the development of electronic music (leading up to the British electro of the 80s you both love). I think it was the first song to rely on synths that became a club AND a pop chart hit. Every synth artist afterwards, no matter their genre, will cite this song.

Y’all really need to hear “MacArthur Park.” No other song of her’s showcases her angelic range. Donna Summer’s voice is an aphrodisiac. She has a song, “Love To Love You Baby” which is the most erotic sounding song I’ve ever heard. Artists like Mikki Minage have to resort to vulgarity and explicit lyrics to even attempt what Donna Summer did with nothing but the sound of her voice. Ooooo…shivers just thinking about it! I place her in the category with Whitney Houston, The Pointer Sisters and Diana Ross.

It was song #1 on her album and "Bad Girls" was #2 and they flowed right into each other since there was no pause between the songs. It was a genius move on Donna's part. "Hot Stuff" was #1 for 4 weeks and "Bad Girls" was #1 for 5 weeks! Also, "Bad Girls" was the #2 song of 1979, and "Hot Stuff" was the #8 song of 1979.

She was the UNDISPUTED queen of disco and, YES, every song of hers brought us to the dance floor. She had an authentic EXCELLENT voice and she wrote most of her hits. Unrelated - At the time I was still recording my own music, her sisters sang backup vocals on a couple of my songs (they sang background for Donna through most of her career) and her lead guitarist was my guitarist/studio engineer. Only saw her perform once and YES - she tore the roof off the sucker. Great in her recordings, better live. RIP, Dear Donna.

I can confirm that she owned the stage live. Her voice was just as powerful in concert. Also, you are correct, this song was played like crazy in every club. After all she is not called the Queen of Disco for nothing. It's a well earned title. Bad Girls should be next...another monster hit.

LaDonna Adrian Gaines (December 31, 1948 - May 17, 2012), known professionally as Donna Summer, was an American singer, songwriter, and actress. She gained prominence during the disco era of the 1970s and became known as the "Queen of Disco", while her music gained a global following. Summer earned a total of 42 hit singles on the US Billboard Hot 100 in her lifetime, with 14 of those reaching the top ten. She claimed a top-40 hit every year between 1975 and 1984, and from her first top-ten hit in 1976, to the end of 1982, she had 12 top-ten hits (10 were top-five hits), more than any other act during that time period.
