She also went very religious and was kind of ashamed of the music she had done in the disco era. Many of her gay audience started resenting her and boycotted her music. Partly the gays made her a star by supporting her and felt betrayed. Sorry for the hard real facts, but I was there when it all happened. So it was all great and all fir Donna, but it all sort of stop for her and probably why she stopped making music for a period. Donna Summer won the first Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for Hot Stuff. She started her musical journey in the Psychedelic Rock Band Crow as the front woman, before she won the part of Shelia in the Munich Production of Hair (the musical) and moved to Europe. She was also the first Queen of Pop Music , she was dominating the Billboard Charts at the time, and rewriting the record books. She became the first female artist to repeat having the # 1 single and #1 album with Hot Stuff and the album Bad Girls (she would repeat it 3 times in 8 months), she would also be the first female artist to have 2 songs in the top 3 (twice in 4 months), and 2 #1 singles in the top 5, and the top 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.
@thebeardedseeker56332 жыл бұрын
that she won the first Grammy award for best female rock vocal cannot be understated. this was during a time when music was extremely segregated. Back then, African-American singers were not encouraged to have a hard rock sound in their music. Donna was having none of that. She did rock, pop, r&b, and country. "Hot Stuff" basically paved the way for Michael Jackson's "Beat It". After that, many African-American artists felt emboldened to experiment beyond r&b and incorporate hard rock into their repertoire without fear of being abandoned by their base or losing radio airplay.

Donna was known as "The Queen of Disco!" "I Feel Love," (Donna Summer/Giorgio Moroeder) was one of the key moments in the development of electronic music (leading up to the British electro of the 80s you both love). I think it was the first song to rely on synths that became a club AND a pop chart hit. Every synth artist afterwards, no matter their genre, will cite this song.

"MACARTHUR PARK", "I FEEL LOVE", "SUNSET PEOPLE", "SHE WORKS HARD FOR THE MONEY", "ON THE RADIO", "THIS TIME I KNOW IT'S FOR REAL", "STATE OF INDEPENDENCE", "LAST DANCE", "HEAVEN KNOWS" and "LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY" are some of the many popular tracks by Donna "The Queen of Disco" Summer that you guys most definitely should also check out! Donna was (and will always be...) in a league all her own - and her extraordinary voice went forever quiet way too soon...💜

The four on the floor puts it into the disco bin and onto the dance floor, the guitar solo by Skunk Baxter gives it a rock edge
Just do the entire Donna Summer catalog! She was without a doubt phenomenal

At the peak of her career and the disco era in one year she had 5 top 10 hits. In which 3 of them topped the charts. And she also had a #1 album! So yes! "Queen of Disco"!

LaDonna Adrian Gaines (December 31, 1948 - May 17, 2012), known professionally as Donna Summer, was an American singer, songwriter, and actress. She gained prominence during the disco era of the 1970s and became known as the "Queen of Disco", while her music gained a global following. Summer earned a total of 42 hit singles on the US Billboard Hot 100 in her lifetime, with 14 of those reaching the top ten. She claimed a top-40 hit every year between 1975 and 1984, and from her first top-ten hit in 1976, to the end of 1982, she had 12 top-ten hits (10 were top-five hits), more than any other act during that time period. The Queen of Disco knocked your boys the Bee Gees from the top of the charts with her song. "Last Dance," "Bad Girls," and the epic "MacArthur Park" are awesome songs.

My fav of hers is “I Feel Love”, with Giorgio Moroder, but I’m an electronic/ambient/space music gal. When I was a young girl, and analog synths hit the scene, whenever I heard them in popular songs, I’d say, “Wait! I want more of that!” 😆 My second fave of hers is “Love To Love You Baby”.

Yep. Bring on that electronic music, my friend! That was a decade. I grew up in the 70's. To be a teen back then, I met a lot of neighborhood friends. 😊😊😊

Jeeze. When I heard that as a teenager in the 70's, it sounded weird. Donna was making uncomfortable noises. I was very young. I don't think my parents were aware. They didn't question it. OMG! How did "Love to Love You Baby" get on AM & FM radio, back then?

This was my second vinyl record when I was 13 years old, a double album if I remember correctly. I also loved "On the Radio" and many others. Funnily produced in Munich, a German album, kind of. Still a staple of pop music !!

Donna had like 20 different voices. Best story teller in music ever. She also recorded every track in one take, so she always had that raw sound to it.

Jay is right, This was the go to song at roller skating rinks to get everyone on the floor. It just has the right beat & tempo to skate with. Similarly, & believe it or not, "Rock & Roll Fantasy" - Bad Company also got people up & moving too. Although, the Jacksons (Jackson 5 later years) "Shake Your Body" is still the ultimate.
